My brother got runner up at NSS race yesterday. - 10/24/11 03:09 PM

We all went to Capital raceway in Md yesterday including my brother with his 64 Plymouth and some other Moparts members. My brothers car was working good yesterday as he ran 10.45 three passes in a row from the first to third round on a 10.45 dail. In the final he went .002 red and ran 10.47. He won some cash and was happy. I had a few problems as I tried backing my timing down to 34 and the car did not like it as it slowed a few mph and only ran 11.02 @ 121. Put the timing back at 38 and ran 10.83 @ 124 as that was the only change I had made on the car. I am usually about a 1/2 tenth to a tenth slower at this track then Cecil where I ran 10.76 so that was in the ballpark for me. I had a blast and got to see Joe (Preddy) and his cool Roadrunner and Jack with his cool Cuda. Jack ran out by .001 as he ran 10.19 on a 10.20. Him and I both did that last year also. I went red with a -.023 lite. But the bummer was the other guy cut a .215 lite. Ah man I did not want to get caught sleeping and I most likely could have won that round sleeping. Ah well I had a blast and nothing broke on the car. Ron

My brother's 64

My rear tires are actually shot as I never did hook real good yesterday but it got a little air.

Whats your cam installed at?
If it is too retarded, it may not like down sizing on the timing being that your car is heavy.
Maybe a little tuning with the carb may help it a little or at least advance the cam over the Winter and see what it likes.
Most importantly, What is your 60'ft time?

The cam was speced by Dwayne Porter. It is 264 & 270 at .050 and about .590 lift but I have 1.6 rockers so its .624 and .630 lift. Has a 110 LSA and I installed it at 106 on his and Comps recomendtation. Best sixty so far is a 1.50 on the 10.76 run. But I will say my tires are gone so I will be getting new tires over the winter. I have done zero tuning so far other then change the timing and jet the carb once as it was to lean at first when the 850 DP was set as I ran it on the old 440. Ron

Oh forgot to say its a solid flat tappet.

Re: My brother got runner up at NSS race yesterday. - 10/25/11 04:53 AM

She may like a nice 950 CFM with a small spacer.
If I make it out to MIR with my car pending on trailer issues and you find a little pot of travel money as well as a trailer, I'd loan you my Bigs 950 with some jetting to see what it does.
We almost have the same cam. Mine is at 640 lift across but I have 1.5 rockers and a bit lighter in weight than your car. street car as well.

Congrats........... Do you have a Dominator 1050 carb you can try Ron? Never seen a hungry motor like yours NOT go faster w/one.

Re: My brother got runner up at NSS race yesterday. - 10/25/11 05:01 AM

Yeah, but he wants to drive it on the street. I'm still waiting to hear of a good carb guru to get a dom to be civil on the street. I might try one if that happens. Oh, I might have opened a can of worms on this one. LOL.

Re: My brother got runner up at NSS race yesterday. - 10/25/11 05:07 AM

Man I almost had my hands on a 1050 Dominator as I really want to try a bigger carb but funds were running low so I just had to use what I had. But I dont think a Dom with the adapter will fit under my hood. I would like to try a single plane intake with one anyway. I would need to get an intake that the Dom would bolt right to and not be to tall to fit under my hood. I hope by next summer my finances are in better shape and I can try a few different things to see what it likes. I am very happy with this Indy dual plane with the max wedge ports as with the 850 DP it has great street manners but I figured it would go faster with more carb. Not sure if a single plane will be faster on this combo. I can get my hands on a 950 Proform but I dont know if that will help much. Ah well I have plenty of time in the next 20 years for fine tuning this combo if I live that long. You know I said if it goes 10's thru the pipes on pump gas driving to the track I will be more then happy and leave it alone. Yea right I am already thinking of some changes that might pick it up. I call it Hot Rod fever ! Ron

Funny as I was thinking the same. I figure if it does go faster when and if I try a Dominator I will have to decide if the street driving manners will be ok for me to cope with but you know us Hot Rodders that if it goes faster we find a way to deal with it. More Hot Rod fever. Ron

My car is a street car that I race a few times a year lately and one drive would blow your mind as far as how nice and easy my car drives w/a box stock hp 8082-3 1050 on the street. I guess we could throw this in there with; You can`t run an 8' vert on the street or, no way a solid roller w/.680+ lift will live yadda, yadda yadda............. I must be a pimp after all.............. And when I post my new best of a 9.78 or better then what................

Heck I here the same thing that you cant drive a Dom on the street but as you said they say the same about 8" verts and I know many who drive 8" verts and 1050 Dom's on the street. And I am always willing to try something if I want no matter what anyone says as I always need to find out for myself anyhow. What intake do you run if you dont mind me asking and what gear ? Also is yours a low or high block ? Thanks , Ron

Re: My brother got runner up at NSS race yesterday. - 10/25/11 01:22 PM

Victor 440 single plain for a Dom is available. It will keep the carb more or less the same height. I think it may be a half inch higher or so.
I did not know you had Max Wedge ports. I have stock size ports with a stage two cleaning for more torque on the street where it is needed. With your combo, I would think that with Max windows on those EZ heads that a Dom and good single plain will give a little something especially at the big end. Maybe the low end would need some shooter/ jetting/timing magic to live.

I`m running the Victor manifold(4150 flange)w/an adapter which will be highly modified this time around by Ed Moser but, you could run an M-1 dom flange and get it done although I believe you`re running a dual plane which I would not but that`s me and your car`s haulin......

Ted he runs a combo close to mine but he uses a low deck. Its a 499 with the 400 block and 4.15 crank. But he runs a roller cam in the .650 lift range and he uses a Dominator with a Victor intake. He has a bit more comp as he has about 11.5 to my 10.6 and he runs Eddy RPM heads he ported himself. He uses an 8" Dynamic converter and I think he still has the 4.88's in the car as it has 33 x 14's on it. It has a ladder bar setup and is backed halfed. It really leaves nice and hooks solid. Very consistent car. His best has been in the mid 10.20's on a good day. His average is 10.40 to 50's. 10.45 was his best Sunday and of course he did it 3 times in a row ! I will give big brother the well deserved credit for that one. He is more the weekend racer brother as I am more of the street cruiser with a few trips to the track a year brother. It really beats me up just being at the track standing around and racing some as my joints will hurt so bad the next few days after I spend time on my feet. But I love this hobby so much. And you have to give me credit for getting my brother more into the NSS racing as he would normally just race brackets when he went and I kept telling him that I like the NSS racing more then any other and to put his 64 into a NSS class. So big brother listened to little brother this time. Ron

I went with the Indy dual plane as since I decided to have Dwayne open the intake ports up to max wedge size I figured I may lose some low end so a few people told me the Indy dual plane would help my low end and still pull strong up to 6500. Dwayne also said it might be a good choice for my combo and I am very happy with it as the low end is good.
But you know us car nuts as if we think another setup could go faster then we have to try it ! I just dont know if I will lose any low end with a single plane and if I do will the top end more then make up for it ? And of course there is only one way to find out.
My question to you and any one else is do you think any good single plane will fit under my hood and not be much if any taller then this as I cant go any more higher then this setup here with the dual plane as it is within 1/2" of the hood ? Ron

I see that you have a one inch or so spacer. Try a Maxed windowed Victor with a Dom. My single plain pulls really good on the low end and makes up more than most on top. I do have to work to improve on my 60ft to match what my mph is showing. I think it is the retard on the cam and or timing.

Yes I have a 1" open spacer on thar Dual plane as thats all I can fit. And I like using the plastic style (cant spell the right word) or a wooded spacer as it helps the hot soak so much.
And the only retard problem I have is the guy behind my steering wheel. Ron
