6200 seems around 500 low to me for a head that flows 343 on 408 cubes

With a cam like that i would think you'd need a higher flash stall, like somewhere around 4800. That 3800 is most likely your 60ft. issues, At 3300 lbs. & a combo like that you should be running 6.8-6.9s 1/8 mile, just to give you an example, there is a member on here with a 71 Swinger, its race weight is just below 3300 lbs., He is running a "junkyard" 360 magnum with EQ heads & a bone stock bottom end, 9.5.1, a smaller cam, around a 4200 stall, 4.10 gears & a 750dp & runs 7.4s.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/26/11 06:21 AM

Combo looks good. You should be shifting at 7k rpm. Even with a bad 60ft you should be well in the 10s with everything sorted out.

More gear 4.30s or 4.56s. Shift higher around 7000.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/26/11 04:03 PM

IMHO you don't need the low gear set with the stroker. My pump gas 408 has gone 6.57 with a 1.38 60' at 3260#. The cam is a flat solid, 260/264 @ .050. I shift it at 6400. It's backed by a 727, with a 9.5" converter that flashes 6000 and a Dana with 4.10 gears.

4.30 with 30 in tires ? or stay with 28.....?

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/27/11 12:28 AM

What was the mph? ET is in the chassis...but if the MPH is low...something's up with engine...

I'd stay with the 3.91s and a 28" tire. Most strokers don't need much gear. If it were mine I wouldn't do anything gear and tire wise until the engine and chassis was tuned. That car should run in the mid 6s in the 1/8.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/27/11 04:31 AM

My 408 combo was close to that(you have 5* dur. more cam and a little more porting) was running 6.60s at 3300lbs with low 1.40s 60'

I can tell you mine liked 6700rpm shift points.

I ran a 9.5" converter 4600 stall, and 4.10 or 4.30 gears.

I would suggest that you try 6600 shifts, then go up 200 at a time tell it does not improve my

Also with the lowgear watchout for bumping the rev limiter in 1st gear {its easy to do)

My stroker(421) went 9.90s with 4.56s and 295/65/15(29in)hoosier drag radials. Tried 4.30s and it fell off.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/27/11 05:38 AM

What's the mph for your times?
Timing?
Fuel jetting? what fuel?
Cam lift?

The combination looks good, probably just needs some tuning... My 408 is as follows:

Nothing trick in the bottom end.
K1 forged crank, K1 rods, Diamond flat top pistons. Basic 408 bottom end. Compression calculated out to 10.3:1

Indy 360-2 CNC heads that have been massaged by Brett Miller (W5Dart66) and he also converted my intake to dominator flange
I believe they flow in the mid 330's at .700 lift

Solid roller camshaft by predator cams, 264/268@ .050, .698 gross lift
Engine runs best between 36-38 degrees of timing
1050 Dominator
Hedman 2" husler headers
727 with a transbrake
5400 ultimate converter
4.56s in a dana with 29.5x10.5 slicks

This is in a 3000# race weight 68 valiant with ladder bar rear suspension.

Went a best of 10.04 @ 131.xx at norwalk 2 weeks ago. Usually runs in the 10 teen or 20 range, depending on the air.
1/8 mile times in the 6.40s and 60' in the mid-high 1.30s depending on track

Keep what gears/tires you have now, I'd look into a higher stall & get to tuning it.

How much compression and cam?

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/27/11 01:04 PM

12 to 1 compression custom ground comp roller for nitrous 260/272 if I remember correctly. Had three different cams in that motor. And those passes were on motor with 9 1/2 dynamic conv tight for spray 3900-4000 stall.

Well I looked and memory was a little off, 272/284 ,110 lobe separation, and 660/661 gross lift.

Great infos..

Keep in mind I have a low gearset....

So may be a 4.10 with 30in tires ?

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/27/11 11:04 PM

Here is my dart with eddy heads and a solid cam. I also run a 904 and a low 1st gear and 4.56 rearend gear. Has been 10.06 @ 131 pulling a huge wheelie at 3130 lbs. I shift at 6800 and the car traps at 7000 rpm on a 29.5 10.5 tire.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 09/30/11 11:12 PM

What chassis mods should I do ?

I have SS spring with rancho schocks, frame connectors 7 deg nose down pinion....
Posted By: Just-a-dart

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 10/01/11 02:37 PM

With a 1.66 60' I assume you had a lot of wheel spin.?

What has been done to the front of the car? Any idea of the weight front/rear? More info will get you more help.

What tires? What shocks are on the front? At this power level the front end has to work to get good 60's.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 10/01/11 03:47 PM

Standard front schocks,
195/55/15 front tires,
may be too low in the front too..
Posted By: dartman366

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 10/01/11 03:59 PM

I would start with front shocks and the proper converter and loosen up the front suspension to get it to work freely.

Still no sign of that elusive MPH number.

Re: First runs of Indy headed SB - 10/03/11 01:29 AM

MPH was unavailable that night.......
