Isky EZ Roll compared to Comp roller lifters

Our 440 now has Comp solid rollers lifters and they will need to be replaced or rebuilt this coming winter. This has been done many times. I am interested in the Isky EZ Roll & need to know what is good or bad about them. The Comp lifters are ok, but seem to require more maintenance & nickel & dime,(replace 5, rebuild the rest). Are the Isky any better & can they be just dropped in to replace the Comps. I would like to have opinions & real experiences.

Only thing about changing lifter brands is that there is "No Standard" in push rod cup height. Chances are you will need diff push rods too.
I personally like the 829 Comp Lifters, never had trouble, and run 750-800 lbs open pressure.
I just check them on a regular basis, and replace them after 250-300 pass's.
I cant comment on the Isky lifters.

It's not that we have had a lot of problems, I just keep hearing & seeing problems with the tiny roller bearings & it appears Isky has done away with these bearings & put a bushing in their place claiming 350% better. I suspected that the push rods would need to be replaced, but I was not sure about anything else like block work etc, also if the bearings are not there they can't fall out & make a total mess of things.

I have been very happy with my EZ rolls from Isky.

Al, have you ever used any other roller lifter, or had the maintenance issues with Isky such as replace 5 lifters & rebuild the rest every 200- 300 runs, or sooner. We have done this 2-3 times between each rebuild. Am I asking too much from any roller lifter?

The Isky's are higher quality and more expensive. The Comps are OK, I don't like the Mickey Mouse way the pushrod seat is retained in the lifter body. I have had some pull out when removing pushrods on an assembled engine. No fun fishing the seat out of the valley and hoping that the thing didn't drop through. I like the link bar design better as well.

Remember, the 829 is the older original Comp solid roller. The 829 relies on splash for oiling. Then they came out with the Endure-X that uses an EDM oil hole to provide oil to the roller. And finally their ultimate lifter called the Elite (98829-16), which oils both the roller and allows oiling through the pushrod. The elite also has a different body style to minimize lifter bore scuffing and they are made from a lighter alloy. But they cost $1000!

The Isky red zones are great lifters. Not as "high tech" as the Elites but probably better than the 829s.

And as long as we're spending big $ don't overlook the Crower lifters.

My 2 biggest issues with Comp roller lifters are replace or rebuild 2-3 times between engine rebuilds & or if the roller bearings come apart & the bearings drop into the rotating assembly & create a total engine dissaster, these examples are what I would like to get away from.

The Crane 66542-16 are great lifters. I used the 66550-16 in my HEMI book because I wanted pushrod oiling. The body design for the Ultra-Pro lifters is such that they do not require bushed lifter bores. They look just like the Comp Elites but for $250 less.

I recently purchased a set of the Comp Cams Elite and I am very unhappy with them, they failed on the 5th dyno pass, link bar broke in half on one pair, killed the pair and the 55mm cam. Link bar on every remaining pair is bent. Total waste of $1000. We got away from the 829's a few years ago, the needles were always failing. For the valvetrain weight and springs of our hemi SS stuff, only the Jesel keyway and Jesel dogbone have lived, 5 years+ on same set, no failures. Comp 829's wouldn't last 20 runs.

We use Isky EZrolls in most of our engines,The elimination of the needle bearings is like a cure for cancer,needle bearing failure can cause thousands of dollars in damage,our customers now have money for upgrades instead of repairs.Bill C.

I have in the past used the 829's. Occasionally we build an engine for someone who insists on using them, usually a budget deal. We let them know that they will need to at the very least be sent in to be checked/rebuilt every year. Also advise them to carry spares

My B1 uses EZ rolls. I have used the std red zones as well with good results.
