OPEN 1" SPACER VS. 4-HOLE 1" SPACER - 08/31/11 01:53 AM

Just found a 4-hole phenolic spacer in one of my drawers...and replaced it for my 1" open spacer. My 440 uses a M-1 single plane with a 950 Holley HP. Will this spacer give a noticable improvement in low-end torque? I always heard they work better than an open design...on a HEAVY(3500 lb.) street car! Can I get your opinions and experiences on this? Thanks in advance! Randy B. BTW...the cam is a 262/266 @ .050...620 lift,solid flat tappet...converter is a 9.5" Dynamic that flashes to 4500rpm

Thats what they say Randy. I ran a 1" 4 hole spacer on my old 440 that had the single plane Holley Street Dominator intake. It seemed to work good as I had a best 60 of 1.57 and best et of 11.49. I never compared it to an open spacer though. I am using a 1" open spacer now with my dual plane Indy intake and it feels strong. Ron

I run them both. 1" 4 hole tapered Wilson in to a 1" open. They sit on a Victor 340. I know a 4 hole will improve the signal to the carb - could be better for street driveability. This is just my opinion, but the larger you can make the plenum and the farther you get the carb from the port runners ( within reason on a single plane manifold ) the more even the fuel distribution will be.

On my 416 with a PF950HP the 4 hole was worth .1 and 1.5mph. Victor W2 intake. Jim

Did you try any other types (open or stacking a open
and a 4 hole)... also where did it pick up... was it
in the 60'.... was that a 1" or 2"

Take both of them to the track and test them, the old butt dyno may not be as accurate as the time slips are

Cab...that's the plan! I'm heading to the track on the 23rd...or 24th....MAYBE both days!First,by themselves,then, as Raff and a few others have suggested...I'll try stacking them,with the open spacer on the bottom. Brad..the wife and I are heading up north to visit her relatives over the week-end.Maybe I'll finally get some fishing in! I'm HOPING to get 2 days in a row of testing in,Sept.23..and 24!

Definitely worth trying especially stacking them up, it's sort of a poor man's super sucker.

Mine picked up around 18hp with the right spacer combo, back when I had a street dominator 383 intake. But that was 3" worth of spacers which told me the manifold was lacking something.

The victor 383 intake was better to begin with and it only picked up 7hp with the addition of an open spacer.....
a 4 hole spacer did absolutely nothing. It did not even change A/F ratio noticeably.

It's worth testing at somewhere like Jake's, so you can catch the little changes (ya know, 7, 8HP or whatever) when you come across em. It ain't much but if you got it, keep it! Myself I would have a hard time seeing 7hp on a timeslip but I am really not that good....

The right spacer can make a huge difference,when you retune for it.
When I used Vic's dialed in Pro Systems and Wilson tapered spacer on my 421,my dyno's A/F fuel numbers showed it was real close to where it should be. Taking the tapered spacer off really screwed up the A/F ratio.
Same for QF 950 and open spacer,but to a lesser degree.
Each intake/carb/spacer combination acts different and should be tuned to get the best results

Personally, I think quantifying small improvements at the track is difficult at best. Just an hour between runs can cause DA, ambient air temp, track conditions, eng temps, to change your Et by a tenth. Thats where dyno testing shines. If I am looking for small improvements at the track, I rely on the MPH numbers before the ET #'s.

MPH is what the engine is making(power wise) ET is what
the chassis is doing

Is that picture the Bigs-modified "950" you borrowed? That looks like an old 850 w/ the choke horn cut off and blended. Can you post a picture of the carb you're testing against my Demon?

but he brought it back so I could put it on my new
street engine

This is true for me and my car. Although I track and record considerable information, I'm just not consistant enough. I always use a weather station, and repeat the change to confirm. I would say that half the time I cannot repeat the improvement that I thought I found.

Little info to report about the 4-hole spacer! Threw it on the 440 before taking it down to the Harper Cruise tonight...the motor didn't seem to like it at lower RPM! It was stumbling a bit...up to around 1800-2000 rpm. Maybe it didn't like the 35 squirter...where the 35 works good with the open-hole spacer! Not really sure! What do you guys think? BTW...Brad..Raff's correct!..that's his modified 850DP in the pic. I'll post one of Russ Dudek's 950HP.

Might need some rejetting to make the 4 hole work good. My 4 hole on my old 440 with the single plane SD worked good at low speeds for my combo. Ron

Randy, try adjusting just the shooters before messing with jets (I personally like to tune jets by the plugs). My engine had a bad stumble with my new Holley and I was able to tune it out by messing with the shooter size. If you don't have them already, install the hollow shooter screws. Installing them eliminates the possibility of flow being an issue.

Thanks,Ryan! I was thinking of going to a 37 squirter,before messing with the jetting. Sorry I didn't get back to you last night! By the time we got out of Paisano's...it was after 8! That place was packed! Their pizza is TOP NOTCH,though! The waitress didn't even charge us for our pasta fajole'...our pepsi's..and gave us free canole to take home! Well worth the wait!..about 15-20 minutes!

I would just take all the carbs, and all the spacers, haul it all down to Jakes, strap it down, plug in the O2 sensor and let it rip.

Let the best combo win. Done.

That way you'll know if A/F is in the ballpark with the best carb and spacer combo too, so there won't be any need to mess with changing jets at the track anymore unless the temp takes a fairly big swing.

When you get to the track prepare to change squirters, probably go larger but not always. I got tired of changing them and bought a drill set...

I have a 4 hole on now, because I can't bolt my carb down flat to the intake, and I lent out my open spacer....
It makes my 60' performance terrible, then start chasing gremlins,,,
It just needs to come back off.
