My Street/Strip 68 Road Runner!! - 08/21/11 01:00 AM

Another all MOPAR car of mine...I've owned this R.R. since the mid 90's that we don't race or drive much anymore(another one put aside under the cover).Won my first street legal race(at the track that is) in 97 wih it and Scott won the IHRA div.4 bracket finals in 99 with it.At one time he won three races in a row at Red River Raceway in Shreveport,La..Won more with this car than any we owned and it was feared at numerous tracks for years ...Current combo-440 0.30 over with eddy heads from Nick @ compu-flow with his stage-2 porting and his comp cams specked cam(flat tappet 620ish lift)-727 trans is from Dynamic as is the 9.5 4500 convertor(deadly)-rear is a braced 8 3/4 with 4.10 gears and S.S. springs..Runs 10.90's @ 120+ mph with this setup...Has been 10.30'S @ 130+ with a indy sr headed roller 440 n/a and low 6'S on the 1/8th with spray.Oh yea it weighs 3385# without driver...I can say without hesitation we've had more fun with this car than any we've owned

Nice car. Besides the aftermarket race stuff, the obvious thing is the GM alternator. Do I win the car?

Very nice runner you have there , love that color! Reading your bio on the car very similar to ours. Our car features stock rear springs, cal tracs, 4.10 geared dana 60, pump gas fed 505 with full exhaust out the back and runs 10.47 @129 best so far and can still cruise it to the burger joint. When on the strip I run 9" Hoosier drag radials and on the street 275 60 15 M/T street drag radials. BTW the Hoosiers took a full 2/10's off over the old M/T 10.5 29 15 bias slicks.

Don't know if the post cars are lighter or not...Has aluminum heads, driveshaft,no heater box or back seat and a glass hood...Everything else is there and works...

Dude, you're killin' me! That's pretty much what I wanted to build for my next project (but with a big-inch low-deck), but instead I'm doing my '64 wagon.
You really should enclose that battery; I would think that would be a problem passing Tech.

and a firewall and master cut off switch, are you buddies with the tech guy? just kidding but i'm going through all that stuff now 'cause i put my batt in the trunk. i run a stock fuel tank so a batt box was all i needed but was told i had to install the switch, otherwise i would have run mine like yours, looks sharp, really nice car, love that colour, is that sunfire yellow?

I have a lowdeck 493" with indy sr heads that makes 773HP on the engine stand, its fresh and all can do to keep from installing it in the road Runner...If you look close where the rear pass side marker goes you can see the cutoff switch and there is a rear firewall.Never been hassled about battery box...Yes its Sunfire Yellow..

Great looking Road Runner. Like that it still has the stock steering wheel. I hope the 68 I'm building turns out half that nice.

Re: My Street/Strip 68 Road Runner!! - 08/23/11 10:35 PM

Wow! Brings back memories!! Racing was much simpler when we were just racing this car. And it wasn't that long ago, lol. I can remember racing it all year long on several occasions and never even taking it off the trailer except to change the oil or tires. I've been down the track so many times in this car I think I can shift it in my sleep and be right on the money every time. Raced it last year for the first time in 5 years at a two tech card race and went 4 rounds in one class and 5 rounds in another. We need to do it some justice and drive it on the street some so it doesn't just sit there.

I used to watch that car race every week at Sears Point (Infinion), guy named Scott from Penngrove owned it. I remember one night it blew the guts out of an 8.75 rear on the starting line! That car always looked good and ran hard, one of my all time favorites....Don't ever paint it! Looks killer!

We used to break a ring gear on our 8 3/4 at the end of every season. Finally we welded a brace on it and haven't had any problems since. Of course it doesn't get raced anymore or driven so who knows if that really fixed the problem.

Fuel regulator is floating beside the carb under the air cleaner. Its hooked inline between the two feed lines going to carb.

Kam*Kuda and Racebeeper68, nice 68 Road Runners y'all have there...Funny that they all have centerline wheels.I do have the fronts to match the rears and rear welds to match fronts. My son Scott(Silverfish)doesn't like the centerlines as well as i do and were probaly going to put m/t drag radials on the welds for the street...

Funny, here it is with the welds and M/T street drag radials, They actually still managed a 10.81 on the 275-60 -15's.
