604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/11/11 10:20 PM

So I'm going to start this thread saying that these guys did a great job on a motor I spec'd out. My specific instructions were a fast bracket motor that might have some light NOS(150-200)and would go 200+ passes without rebuilding or changing valve springs often and would run Sonoco Maximal fuel, all day long. I was told going into the project that the dyno we were using was somewhat conservative, and I know we don't race dynos...well some of us do. The sheets I will post will show the best pull with 2 carbs, and the only pull with one carb. It was also not my intention to wear the thing out on the dyno. So although I was hoping for more, I will get it in the car by MATS and we'll see what it yields on the track. That's what counts in my world.

That's good hp. With a single carb. Conrats.

Hello,

Able to do 200 passes and minimal spring changes pulling down 1150hp sound awesome to me. Helluva fun ride! Sounds like you got a exactly what you wanted. Great balls of fire!

Let us know how the track treats you.

Did you do any pulls above 7500 RPM? It looks like it was still gaining power at the cut off RPM on the tunnel ram sheet

Really, I didn't want them to beat the heck out of it and it won't see anything over 7800-8000 in the traps. So, since I wasn't there, I can't answer that for sure, but I doubt it. When I get it in the car, I'll play with the shift points, but I'm glad it lost less than 40HP with one carb. Marcella did a great job on the intake. Maybe I'll come out to the Mopar deal at Woodburn again next year and you can come over and say hi Cab.

Re: 604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/12/11 04:37 AM

We could have pulled it higher but the plan was not to beat it up on the dyno. It is built with all the best parts and can surely handle the higher rpm. The time slip will tell the true tale!
The puff of white smoke at the end of the pulls is steam from the water brake on the dyno, yes the water gets that hot!
Overall we are very happy with the results. The engine sealed up well(always a battle with an aluminum block),has great vacuum, and has a flat torque curve.
I,for one, can't wait to hear how it performs in the car!!!

Nice! Hey Steve, give me a call next time you plan on running one of those. I'd be interested to come out there and check it out...

Re: 604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/12/11 04:47 AM

Motor sounds great and torque curve is nice and flat, will be very interesting to hear how your car performs by comparision to the B1 engine your were running before IIRC.
Best of luck to you the predator is a very nice top end.
Are you changing convertors or is the torque similar enough I am wondering if you will need a tighter converter ?

Very nice!! Congratulations on building an awesome engine. As others mentioned, anything that can make 200 maintenance free laps and make 1150 hp doing is no disappointment. Please keep us updated on how it all works out in the car.

The 604 CID did like the additional air flow. Was that the same tunnel ram with a single carb top? What size are the carbs?

Looks good.

Well I don't put much creedance in dyno numbers, but in track ET numbers. I'll know when I get it all tuned up and the right converter in the car and make some clean passes. Plus it's the win light that motivates me to do this stuff, not some thoeretical number from a dyno. Also, I've never seen a dyno sheet that didn't have corrected numbers.

You might be suprised from what I've seen. I looked at going with the GM stuff and though there are alot more options, they didn't look to be cheaper at this level with all of the upgrades I picked.

The 604 CID did like the additional air flow. Was that the same tunnel ram with a single carb top? What size are the carbs?

It was the same intake. I had it made with 2 tops from Marcella.

Are you ging to at Boise for the division 6 bracket finals? If so maybe I'll try to look you up, if I can remember to

I live in Salt Lake and we are IHRA here so unless Woodburn needs somebody to fill in, I can't get in.

Are you changing convertors or is the torque similar enough I am wondering if you will need a tighter converter ?

I'm going to try the one I am using and see what the results are, but I can have another one built, if I need to. Jim at Torque Converter Works is a freind of mine and has built lots of high end converters so if I need one looser or tighter, he just a call away.

Thanks for the support guys and I'll post when I get it in the car and have some real results. That's what I don't see enough of here, real results. I wish more people dyno numbers vs ET and MPH numbers. And if they could let us know the type of car, weight with driver, and altitude, we would know what some of these numbers mean and if corrected numbers lie. That's the real comparison IMO and the only reason I post like this is to help the poor fool like me that is considering any type of build.

Re: 604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/12/11 10:10 PM

You dont see a lot of "results" numbers because everyone here wants to race dynos. Its funny how many combos never get reported on again ...and never do we see any of the big track numbers their dyno numbers should support. There is way more to a combo than a good dyno number, but Hot Rod magazine doesnt sell good without the big numbers.

You did fine, and who cares what you paid for it. YOU got what you wanted, had a good guy build it, and its YOUR money. I'm glad you did it your way and sounds like you had a great plan.

A lot of guys just want to get caught up into the " my Johnson is bigger" race, but on track results are what counts. You had a plan, stuck with it, and actually put thought into what you wanted, and had YOUR specific goals set. That is wonderful in my book.

Good luck to you.

That race scares me Al. If you go, be real careful several people crashed last year and many were dragsters. Good luck though if you decide to go. I'm going to try to make the div. after the national. And with this motor, traction will be more challenging, even with a "street motor". Now that's funny right there.

The turkey race is somewhat dangerous Al, even with a "street motor" now that's funny stuff. I will try to make the show at the divisional in T/D with the predator, if I can get it done.

thoughtful words, but u were the first 1 to critic the b1 pso dyno numbers

I'm not sure what you're talking about dude. I never critiqued the PSO, as I was really impressed with the dyno results on B1 Johnny's build. I almost went that way, but wanted to upgrade to more power later. I have laughed at people who think they're -1 indy and SR heads flow big numbers like a B1, but the PSO heads are very impressive. I would just like to hear how some of these combo actually perform at the track. PS the PSO set up was around the same price and unavailable at the time. And I like the canted valve design even though I will need new headers.

Lets get this right. You live in Salt Lake City and you had Bill from NJ do the build and dyno test???? Just curious . I do know their reputation and had some work done by him years ago.

I dont know whats in the motor as far as parts aand such, so cant comment on the numbers. Sounds nice though
most important thing is ..... good luck with it.

Re: 604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/14/11 04:56 PM

I can guarantee the poke on the PSO deal was at me. As I was the one that stated lets see what it runs. I am sure the PSO deal of B1johnny will run very well. You have to know the context even on that comment to uderstand why it was made

When it is all said and done I hope we here the numbers from both combos in thier respective cars, I am sure they will both work well. Trying to run in T/S or T/D is not easy at all. As the years go on it is going to get harder and harder to make those fields.

Tom no worries on the Turkey day race. My junk dont make enough power to have a problem. We will of course be at the Divisional running S/ST.

Don't worry Al I'll post my runs/timeslips as well as on board videos with cameras from Cudafied (Part Of The Action). Probably not untill the begining of next season unless someone wants to sponsor me to get the car done

Re: 604 Predator dyno session complete - 08/14/11 05:43 PM

I think we couls all use a sponsor

Best of luck with the car. Trying to run T/S is no easy task for sure. I will be waiting to see the results. As someone pointed out earlier we often see some dy no numbers but never hear how they ran in the car. Always nice to see track results. I know my junk is an underachiever but being a S/ST racer I have never been to concerned with the ultimate ET from the car.

Be watching both combos to see the results. Always tough to compare a suspended digger to a door car. I am sure I will see Tom's in person. We have been thinking of building a real engine for my heap for next year. So interested in seing the results. Have been leaning toward the Predator stuff but I have a good pair of B1 heads and may just go much bigger than my current set up. But might just have a whole new car all together.

One last tidbit some here dont include is the DA the car runs in. Tom spends most all his time running at tracks with bad air. I would best most of the time he is in in 4000'+ DA's. The MATS is probably the best air he sees other than going to Oregon or Boise a year. I know last time we went out the DA was between 5500-6000'. Feels like I am towing a boat behind me

Hey Al, 5500-6000 is good air here. I've seen it at 8500 before. Talk about knocking the wind out of your combo. I hope you are doing well down there, and yes your car makes killer power for being a dwarf in a giant world. I remember seeing you go in the 8.40's at Vegas a while back, right? Anyways, stay in touch. I'm going to try to get all my stuff put together to install the Predator sometime in September, if possible. I'll let you know the results as our last race is the end of September here .

The motor is on the way and should arrive by Tuesday. I hope to get it in the car on Labor Day weekend if everything goes right. I have some family stuff to do too, so we'll see. I'm really curious to see how it runs. Last night the air here was 8800ft corrected. The best my B1 could muster was 7.84.
