How do YOU slow down YOUR car for index racing?

How do YOU slow down YOUR car for index racing? - 08/01/11 09:35 PM

For those of us without a throttle stop and massive electronics.. how do you slow down your car for index racing...??

I've heard of the wooden block and the adjustable bolt under the GO pedal... but what else is there that will maximize consistency and minimize driver error?

BTW.. we're talking approx 1/2 second

In Nostalgia Super Stock, where any type of electonic device is a big no-no, most guys add weight. A lot of the cars have lengths of round stock in the trunk, where they add weight in 10lb increments by using the weights off of a dumbell set. It's legal as long as it's secure.

Try disconnecting the secondaries, my buddy does it to run 10.0 index.

I slowed my car down 1 full second with 3 things...
1 is the mech throttle stop, 2 the launch RPM and
3 is the shift RPM... I made 8 passes within .008
total spread.... this is a pic of my stop that mounts
on the carb in a few seconds... I needed something
quick to change because I was running 2 classes

I do index racing i run 6.0 heads up on a pro tree and i change the timing and jets in the carb and put weight in or out of the car and RPMS on the trans brake and on the shift but some put a bolt on the gas pedal and ajust but if you build your motor to the class it don`t take much to change the ET i hope this helps good luck.

When I raced the Challenger or RR in NO E index such as C gas I went with a adjustable bolt under the loud pedal, here is a bit more expensive method but I here the results arn't bad. This guy also races at Infineon....

Here's a well thought out product that I know of that several guys are running and very very happy with. Also several of the Heritage series guys are using it.

I have treid adding wieght, it does work , short shifting and trying to go from first to third, that works also, maybe not enough I have treid (that was worth 1/10 in the 1/4 ) moving the shift rpm from 6400 to 7000 in 1st and 2nd, removed the collectors, retarded the timing, smaller accelerator pump shot, a lot bigger squirter and added 50CC pumps Taller reear tires, lots of ways to slow the car down some of them unintentionally sometimes

With that throttle "limiter" I have it set at about
1/3 throttle and tweek the launch and shift RPM and
its dead on for running the 10.0 class.... with back
to back runs in the 10.002 to 10.008 in 8 straight runs
and that cost me all of about 3 bucks and my time

That's what we're trying to get the Duster from 10.-teens to a 10.60, a 10.90 and 12.0's for Sportsman. We're close on the 10.60, but still working on the 12.0 deal. That said, Brett has been GREAT to work with and are almost always at the track with their 2 cars running 2 classes.

So far, I'm liking it, just have to swap some more plates with them to be dead on the numbers.

Re: How do YOU slow down YOUR car for index racing? - 08/02/11 04:40 AM

Use a mechanical stop of some sort. Buy a t stop and just use the adjustments to dial it in. Then when your ready to run in electronics you wont need to buy one. I know a guy with a spare. Or get one of those adjustable mechanical plate set ups. Guess it depends on what youjr trying to do. If you want to run S/ST in your car IMO just get a stop and good controller. If you are looking to run D/Gas sky is the limit, but IMO get a t stop and use it.

Thanks guys for your input..

We're probably going to take the car out this weekend to run a 10.60 index, so I was just looking for ways to slow the car down for this race only.. After this weekend, we still have 3 more bracket races and (hopefully) the ET finals..

Next year, we'll probably bump up the horsepower and may even move up in class, but for the time being, I'm trying to keep it easy and simple..

I forgot last night abot using a biiger or smaller carb. to change the ET My first Duster ran high 11s with a 600 D.P. on a TM7 intake and ran low 11s with a M1 4500 intake with a 1050 Dominator at Plamdale in the summer Do you have a 600 vacume secondary carb or a Carter or Edlbrock 600?

Thats why I made the stop that I did... I wanted
simple and cost effective(CHEAP).... it would be
a cold day in hell that I would pay $350 to do the
same thing I did for $3.00... close the throttle
blades on the carb or put a restrictor under the carb...
same thing

Bob... no I dont... I made it to fit my 1050 dom...
the pin fits into a hole in the base and then the other
end goes over the mounting stud... here is a pic of
the hole

Mike.. where did you get the bracket? and did it already have a hole for the threaded rod, or did you have to modify it?

I made the whole thing... a piece of flat stock that
I bent 90*, contoured it, welded a 1/4x20 nut to it at
the angle I needed and a piece of 1/4x20 threaded rod...
and a piece of round stock I had that fit the hole
that I welded on so its nice and stable
took all of about 1 1/2 hours from design to done
and working

Blocking the secondaries will work (duh!), but its' a bit dangerous.
If the engine is big enough, the high vacuum in the primaries will shut the power valve.

Might - but "Dangerous" - I doubt - you been hanging around too many attorneys!!!

The engine may lean down some - my experience doing this is you normally have to take the jets up by two and bring the timing back a little and watch your plugs. The advantage to taking out the secondaries is you get the full pump shot at launch versus running partial throttle against a stop

The 2010 track champion at acto, cecil, and I think raceway park in 10.0 index runs with his secondarys disconnected. He takes off a half second by doing this and pulling timing.

I never had any issue on the pump shot... its getting
2... 1/2 volume shots but takes in alot less air so
to me that was a wash

Since we're on the subject.. how much timing can you pull out of the motor and still be safe?

Re: How do YOU slow down YOUR car for index racing? - 08/04/11 06:06 AM

We had the old Demon down to 20 degrees(from 36) trying to get it to run 9.90. Only issues I have ever had with getting to low is excessive heat, both water temp and from the pipes. Timing is one easy way to kill some ET. I still say whomp away.

Seriously you have weight for the car and a nice system to ad more. I think between adding some more weight and timing you can get close enough to race. Spot dropping is actually a VERY good idea IMO. Provided you have the time to test and find the right spot.

Re: How do YOU slow down YOUR car for index racing? - 08/04/11 01:10 PM

Don..

Here is what I used to do...

Welded tubing in the trunk, that would fit regular weight lifting weights.
Drilled holes in the tubing to put pins just above each weight.

This way, I could add whatever amount of weight I wanted, where I wanted..

Even passed tech. Just have to have the correct size pins or bolts.

If I can find a pic, I will post it..

Mike, I ordered the Moroso throttle stop thingy from Summit.. its the one that looks very much similar to yours and its supposed to arrive later today.. I'm not sure I will need to use it, but if I do, at least I'll have it..

Also, I've always been curious how much timing you can take out and not hurt the motor, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to fish for an answer..

I tried slowing down a friends car with timing... we
pulled 6 or 8 degrees and it slowed very little...
it tends to burn way to hot in the pipes... dont know
what its doing to the exhaust valves and seats
