Front(wing) carnards - keep it/lose it?

Front(wing) carnards - keep it/lose it? - 07/19/11 05:30 PM

I have front(wing) carnards on my dragster. I have noticed after a few runs, the wind is pushing the carnards down enough to start pulling the pop rivets out. I run mostly 1/8 mile tracks and my speeds are a little over 150 mph. So I really don't need them for the down force. I was thinking they would help the aerodynamics. But my main concern is, could they be hurting my ET? Thanks

Yes it's possible that they could be slowing you down. Right at maybe 110 they start to work, just guessing?

I would take them off and make a couple runs with them off and see. I'm sure you should be safe without them, just make sure the front end is not too light and you don't go into a big wheel stand first launch.
But if you decide to keep them(I would) then it's time to rebuild them anyway. Can't have them coming apart and you drive over them.
Smash rivit are the only type rivit I would use in racing.
Carbon wings are even better but I'm sure you know that.

Thanks for the advice. I really like the idea and looks of them, but was thinking they might be slowing the car down some with as much downforce as they seem to have.
I changed the picture, this one may have a better view. The outer edges look like the pressure is trying to push them down.

Whats the attack angle of them... might reduce that
a little but with the skinny fronts I would prefer
to have some force on them... in case you need to do
some serious steering

I just remembered I put some new tires on front that were out of round(never thought to check that before)and run it a couple of times at a small track that was a little rough. I was thinking it was just the track not the tires. That could have weaken it some.

I forgot maybe the most important question to ask. How much ET & mph am I giving up with the wing?

MR_P_BODY, I will have to check attack angle. I don't think it is very much,it has a smaller turn up (wicker bill ?)at the back may try and straighten, flatten it out some.

If you decide to try to straighten the tabs on the trailing edge of the front wing, make sure they are equal. Those bent up tabs are basically the same thing as ailerons on the wing of an airplane. If you have more angle on one side, that side will have more down force that the opposite side. Personally I wouldn’t mess with the tabs. Creating down force on the front shouldn’t cause loss of ET. Drag causes ET loss. I would say the drag on those wings is very small.

You would have increased friction on the tire and
the force on the canard
