Headers for a 1968 Dart with 440-1 Heads - 07/13/11 01:07 AM

I hope this is in the rite spot.

OK after going through tons of post and not really finding what I need I'll just ask and get kicked in the head for this post

If you know of a good post or can just tell me that would be great.

What I'm looking for is a set of headers (biggest tube) that will fit in a 1968 Dart with 440-1 heads on a 440 motor (MRE 540 block) with a factory K-member and using a front engine plate. The car is m/s m/b with a 727 auto. If theres anymore info needed I will get to you so I can get the best header for this car.

Thanks

A friend of mine put 2" tti's on a 500 RB and he had to notch the shock support on the passenger side.

I bought a set of Hedman race headers (no flanges for the collectors to bolt to) for my car(1971 Duster with a BB) when I bought the Indy heads, call Hedmans race shop # in Georgia to get the part number Sorry for not having it, Google Hedman Headers, the race shop number is in the contact information The Hedmans fit a lot better than the Hookers I had did, the Hookers rub the front tires more, the Hedmans are tuck in tighter to the inside of the fenderwells IHTHs BTW, Hedman makes two different sets of headers for the BB A body Mopars, one for standard heads and one for the Indy heads I bought mine form Summit, have them drop ship them to you directly, Summit does not stock them, they are custom made by Hedman when you order them Hedman will coat them also, way cheaper than anyone else I could find Nice coating, I used black, hard to see them in the car from the sides this picture is of my car before switching to the Hedmans, the Hookers are Jet Hot coated and the exhaust pipes(under the car rocker panels all the way back and go under the rear end hosuing are coated black The side pipes hide the ladder bars also the Hedmans are really nicely finished and fit well

There is an abundance of capable fab shops in the Detroit-Metro area that can build you a set. The last set I did, I had about $600. in materials. Plus labor. Plus powder coating. You have to realise that when you put a motor in using a motor plate etc. your gonna create variation in how well these shelf headers work.

Custom headers are the ONLY way to go. Mine are 2" to 2 1/8" stepped fenderwell headers that my friend made for me from Hooker flanges and tubing that I bought from Jegs.

Here's why they are worth every penny:

I can remove them from the car in less than 1/2 hr.

I can replace the starter in about 10 minutes. (nothing is in the way)

There is not a single ding, dent, or sharp bend on them.

When I put the car on the rear bumper in Chicago (wheelie bars were in the trailer ) I dinged the oil pan and tranny pan, but did not touch the headers.

I can load/unload my car on any open or enclosed trailer and the headers will not drag or hang the car up.

In most applications the The 2" Hooker and Hedman fenderwell headers work. They range from $500 to $750.Custom headers run from $800 to $1000 for larger tube and coated.

Go with the custom headers for the few bucks more. Better fit and better material.

George, I hope your experience was good. LOL! Mine was. Seriously though, Sean did my headers (see pic in his post above). I don't think I would want anything but customs now. If you use a slip collector they can be removed in pieces very easily with the motor in place. Can also be made to better access the spark plugs .

I have a set of Steve Kaliher's custom 2" to 2 1/8" tube with a 4" merge collector that picked my car up considerably when installed over the old Pro Parts headers.
I may be interested in selling them if I do change direction. PM me

THE right place would be diamond QC coatings for the powder coating. Plain and simple

Mark H,
If I was looking for work, AND I'M NOT, I would take offense to what you've said. But since you've added your contradicting some respected opinions I have to ask what profound results qualify your ABSOLUTE statement? How would you know the difference?
