Help me get an air pocket out of cooling system

Help me get an air pocket out of cooling system - 06/11/11 11:42 PM

I decided to go with a Mazierre electric water pump when I put the new engine in my Duster. The block has been filled. I filled the radiator Thursday morning and fired the car up. The water flowed very quickly thru the radiator.

Today I fired it up and set the timing. I took a look and my temp guage was up to 150. It is about 99* today but I knew there was a problem. I removed the radiator cap and sure enough, no flow in the radiator. I can hear the pump running.

I drained the radiator and refilled the motor thru the upper radiator hose. Started the pump and no flow again. Then after about 15 seconds I heard a burp sound and there was a gush of water. It stopped again but 10 seconds later there was another burp and a gush of water. It did this 5 times and then no more water flow.

I let it cool for a few minutes and tried it again. This time no flow. I squeezed the top radiator hose closed for about 10 seconds and there was a gush of water and a little flow. I noticed some bubbles in the water. After doing this about ten times I noticed that after the gush of water there would be a little flow then there would be another gush about 10 seconds later. I repeated this process for about 10 minutes with the same results.

Am I correct in assuming that I have an air pocket somewhere? If so, how do I get it out.

Thanks,

Raul

i have the Mezzaire reverse flow & it always misbehaves like this after i've drained the radiator. i found raising the back of the car is enough to get the pump to pick up & start the flow. i do a few 30 sec stops & restats to make sure all the bubbles get picked up & moved on. once it's done it's good to go for the rest of the season.

Lossen top bolts with pump on, let the air out until all you see is water, tighten back up. I have to do it all the time when I drain the water out.

Get a radiator pressure tester, pressurize it at 20-25 lbs for 24 hours. That is about the best way I have found to get all the air out. If you don't have one you can get one from Autozone on their loan a tool program.

I have a Meziere, any time I drain the system I just refill it with this tool and I'm on my way.

My Mezzaire will do this too. I just remove the top left side small allen head bolt from the pump that holds it to the pump housing, it bleeds out and then it picks up the water.

LONG AGO I TAPPED A BLEEDER SCREW INTO THE VERY TOP OF THE PUMP HOUSING

Or you can fill with water. Turn pump on take air hose and GENTLY blow through the overflow hose while holding your hand where the cap goes.

This works for me too

Thanks for the suggestions. I broke the upper left bolt that holds the motor to the housing loose and ran the punp. It took a few minutes, but finally all the air bled out. I was going to jack up the rear of the car but space is tight and I took the easy way out.

Thanks again.

The last time I had to re-fill my radiator it got an air pocket
I tried everything ( I was late heading out for a race) Then my wife ask me to try jacking up the back of my car to see if it would come out, I told her I would try anything but I didnot tink it would work. Guess what, She was right

I hate it when she's right

Well,I replied too soon. I went out and fired the car up an hour ago and the same thing,no water flow. I jacked the rear end up as high as I could and let the pump run for two minutes. Lowered it back down and let it sit. I just tried it again and no flow.

Everytime I shut the pump off I hear a burping sound like water is filling up a void. I guess I'll start bleeding it again in hopes that it will eventually work.

did you check the rotation of the pump blades ?you might hear spinning backwards .or your pos neg is reversed also seen that happen .
I would think air trys to raise why would the back of car HELP jack up front .
let us alll know i've run a miesiere for 11 years sent in winter to freshen up .

I would think Fred's idea of tapping in a bleeder screw at the highest point would work. That's what several o.e.m's do.

Is your fill point lower than the intake? If so you may need a remote fill point like on the intake. Lots of OEM's have the radiator lower than the highest part of the engine so they use a remote fill and a bleeder on the engine.

I fill the system thru the stock radiator which is above the intake manifold.
