Griner TF transbrake questions....

Griner TF transbrake questions.... - 06/07/11 07:09 PM

My son competes with a SB stroker/TF combo in a lite wt roadster [~1900#] and has been experiencing many problems with the Griner transbrake valve body. We have several TB solenoids to work with & all can be made to function properly on-the-bench, but then act erradically [hit or miss] when installed in the vehicle. The solenoids will periodically stick and the car "creeps [LOL!]" thru the beam....

Both the solenoid & the TB valve body look like proprietary pieces, & would not be easy to duplicate even by a competent machine shop [which we have].

Any suggestions or shared experiences with this stuff?

i only know 2 racers using Griners & thats the sort of problem they're having. they've since fixed them but it was solenoid related. they didn't elaberate to me because i was giving them some stick as i use the A&A brake.(better solenoids apparently)

I used one for 6 years up until about 2 years ago, never had a single problem ever crop up with it.

Are you torqueing the bolts in the valvebody when you install it to the correct spec or just bolting them down?

If you're following the installation instructions and it still won't work, contact member 727specialists . He knows more about Griner valve bodies than anyone except Griner himself.

Bolts are torqued to spec. Problem appears to be heat related as solenoid in this type of TB is completely immersed in the ATF. TB operates properly [allowing the car to be backed] when first started but gets progressively more hit or miss as ATF fluid temps approach operating [~200+].

Why don't you just call Griner? They probably are aware of that condition.

Have been trying to contact Griner for several weeks now. Not sure whether he's still in business as phone is never answered....

And, of course, ATI [the original supplier of the Griner TB valve body] won't [or can't?] deal with only the solenoid. They will gladly sell another complete assembly for $$$$ though...

Any leads on Griner would be appreciated as I'm not ready to swap the TF for a 'glide.

PM board member 727specialists . He assembles the valve bodies for Griner. I am not sure Griner himself ever talks on the phone.

Just called Keith, he is going to look in this thread.

Never had a problem with my Griner brake and have had it over 10 yrs. You could be getting electrical interference. I run mine thru a relay. Check your grounding of the brake also.

First thing I would do is take a line pressure reading

thats what we did and i can't remember what it was but we turned it down .
I've had my griner since 1993 thousands of pass's changed soleniod out
.My next one will be LBA .

I will be at Griners for the rest of this week.
You can call me there 765-296-2955
Or you can reach me at 219-718-3542... Keith

Re: Griner TF transbrake questions.... - 06/08/11 12:50 PM

Just some thoughts. The line pressure was one of them, the other was electrical resistance in the solenoid circuit due to heat buildup. If you could test the solenoid ohms resistance cold, then hot, might show something? I run a relay, and big wire, never had a problem. Griner brake since 2001(?)

Thanks for all your replies & suggestions. My son will be contacting Keith to discuss further...

For the record this problem was not the solenoid which is usually the case.

They tried another solenoid and had the same problem.

I don't know if they found the problem or not though. Keith

I just picked up a trans that has a griner brake. It will be my first brake. I have a question about the solenoid function. does it use oil pressure to hold it open or closed then when the button is pressed it changes? Doesnt seem there is a spring or anything in it to hold it one way or the other I was bench testing it to make sure the solenoid was good. Any info would be great.. Thanks

Re: Griner TF transbrake questions.... - 07/16/12 12:22 PM

Griner transbrake is a fluid release design. Pressure acts on a differential area on the transbrake valve and closes off(pushes out the valve) the pressure from the transbrake hydraulic circuit when the button is not depressed. When the button is depressed, the solenoid pulls in and allows oil pressure to flow to the front clutch and low/rev band. When the button is released, solenoid pull force is absent, and the fluid pressure acting on the differential area forces the transbrake valve out, exhausting pressure from the direct clutches >>>> LAUNCH. The early solenoids do not have internal springs in them. The later ones do, but the spring is not necessary. Fluid release thru the differential area valve is what makes it function. Solenoid winding resistance should be about 1.5 ohms.

Food for thought as I have run a Griner since forever. If the transbrake isengaged with the idle too low it will creep. the line pressure is based on the idle speed. Years ago I had the same issue and I just bumped the idle up 200rpm and never had the problem again.

Our Ginder t-brake works great 7.70-7.80 times with our combo using 2nd gear start. Keith set up and built trans. Check both band adjustments after a couple of passes after they get stretched & set in.
Good luck.
