Exhaust "clamps" on hot side? - 06/01/11 01:14 AM

Looking to keep my hotside plumbing simple and make it easier to remove and I was wondering if there was a reason these wouldn't work...

I haven't used them before so I'm looking for some opinions. I was thinking they might provide a relief point for expansion too

I have no experience with this style of clamp upstream of the turbo's. I did however use them at a slip joint in my down pipes. To date they have been flawless. I purchased mine through a local heavy truck parts supply. It is my understanding that heavy trucks use these frequently, but again, I don't know if they are acceptable in the higher pressure area upstream of the turbo's.

Thats what I was afraid of it blowing apart. It will be "blocked" so to speak from the back by the header so it might take it idk

You would be surprised at how much pressure 8-10 lbs really is! You gotta use good v-band clamps for the pressure/hot side!

Use these,

They have a inner flange for positive seal.

They are a bit pricey but well worth it. I paid more for the 3". $38 shipped and I used 5.

Those clamps are useless against turbo backpressure I tried it. Use ball flange or v band. I had the best luck with ball flange as they are more forgiving.

I love the clamps you posted the link for exhaust, however using them on a boosted application would be a boost leak nightmare.

Even when used on exhaust the part where the band is pulled together almust always has a slight leak that you can see when you remove the clamps.

Nothing you can hear or worry about on a exhaust but on a boosted motor

I'll go with the v bands then

I only need one for the cross over to be removable the rest already have flanges at the headers and it will be welded solid at the turbo support bracket. I just want the ease of removal because I'm mocking it all up on my 273 then taking it all back apart to clean and paint it to put it back on the 318. I'm sure the 318 isn't going to last long under boost anyway lol so I don't want to have to fight it when I go feeding it shortblocks

Do you have to butt weld the v bands or does the pipe slide inside the flange it comes with?

damn i wish I knew those exsisted on ebay. I just spent more than $50 each for 6 of them on my exhaust from summit.

The pipe will go into the flange about a sixteenth of an inch. Be sure to hit the edge of the flange with a 36-grit disc so the weld doesn't splatter due to contamination. I made the mistake of buying "Aluminized" mild steel pipe. Hard as heck to get that coating off for welding!!

Almost my entire build was obtained from there. Found the best deal on a Hallman manual boost controller too.

Looks like his intercooler is the exact same one I got for $145.00. Had to flip one tank so the inlet would be at the bottom and the outlet to the top. Came with a load of clamps, 3 ply couplers and 3" polished aluminum pipe.

The pipe slides all the way through them, which was sometimes a problem. Got all my pipe from them too, and the straight vs bends seemed to have a decent variance in the OD, so some of them fit tight, some had slop that made it harder to get a good joint.

Same intercooler lol The only gripe I had about it is it only came with one 90 and one 45 couplers...I need two of each
