Rollout differences in slicks - 05/11/11 07:36 AM
So I just recieved my pheonix slicks one at a time from Summit and they are way different. The first one shows up and has a 90" rollout then a week later my second one shows up with a 88 3/4" rollout. I paid for them at the sametime not relizing they would ship from two different locations and send me tires that far apart, This Sucks.

i live close to pomona ca. when the winternationals come i always buy my slicks right off the manufacture trucks. the tires are as fresh as they come and perfectly matched since there there to support the racers. not sure if you have any big events your way. i started doing that since i had the same thing happen like you told.

When you buy at a national event they will mount and balance them (no extra charge)and measure the roll out making sure they are the same.

You need to mention when you order that you want them the same OD, as in "matched set". With a spool, it matters to me.

I have a word of caution, the numbers chalked on the tires for rollout are not to be trusted. You must mount the tires put race ready air pressure in and measure the rollout with preferably a cloth tape measure to assure accuracy. Only then can you be sure of the rollout measurement. My experience is the number on the tire when you get it means next to nothing, I believe the distributors just put the same numbers on sets to sell in and effort to eliminate some customers from bitching about rollout differences (which does happen). I run Pheonix exclusively so I like the tire, it works the best, but you gotta check their rollout.

It is not that uncommon to have tires that are different rollout. The deal is fix it before ever running the tire. 30psi in the sun. Stretch a little at a time checking the tires at equal pressure. Once it is right. Mount the tires on the car and do a burnout to heat cycle the tires. I would not suggest ever running a set of tires with unequeal rollout, but have always had good success stretching the short tire.
