why do you race??? - 03/11/11 07:40 AM

i've been thinking here for a while of why do i race is it that i love the speed or just trying to beet other ....not to sure but have alot of good parts now and was thinking maybe i should have just stuck to when it was fun,now its more of who is the fastest or badest...went 7.40 with a small block my son and i put build and now going 5xx in big block and dont know if its still going to be fun or not...why do you guys race??? if it for the fun, money, what makes us want to spend all this money and go through all the ups and downs of this sport????

Re: why do you race??? - 03/11/11 07:45 AM

I race because well to be honest.....I like the partying at night in the pits and being around good friends who share a common interest....there will always be some one faster....or richer.....be your own man....stop trying to be eveyone elses and find your own way....wether it's a 15 seocnd driver or an 7 sec 10.5 car....do what you want to do.
Currently my big motor is dead...so we slapped in a demo derby car motor....It runs 12's all day long....havin a blast!!!!!
Next season I'll plug the big motor back in.

Could I afford more?....HECK YES.....do I want to spend $$$$$ chasing an ego?...NO

Simple ...to - at the very least - pay for the expense of racing and HOPEFULLY make-money.

in the last 50 years I have tried everything from fishing to restoring cars and everything in between.Nothing else has held my interest. Great people, good times and the friendship of some very special people.
Plus it's cheaper, safer and better for your health than whiskey and wild women

building some neat cars and driving what you build is a strong point.

Another poster belonging in general...This is Unlawfl's part of the board, not yours.

A grizzled old track owner and I were having a discussion one day 25 years ago, and I said, "I just come out here to have fun". He smiled, and said, "Billy, if anyone came out here for any other reason...it was the wrong one!"

The thing is, everyone is a little different, so "having fun" at the track has many different meanings...some have to win, some have to make money, some have to be the fastest or most impressive machine there, some are competitive, while others are more social, I've always enjoyed the fact the Drag Racing has a place for all types, the people are just as diverse as the machinery and the ET's.

For me, some things happened at the end of the 08' season, that took much of the fun out of it, and led me to re-evaluate some of my friendships in the sport. So, I haven't been back since, just working on the cars, reloading, and waiting for that old familiar desire to return.

Re: why do you race??? - 03/11/11 03:54 PM

It was always a competitive thing for me, lately though I just like to tinker and have fun. I've wanted to drag race for as long as I can remember, always was a car freak even as a very young child. I've won a track championship but not a division one yet. Probably won't now as I may only drive for another year maybe two. My competitive drive has diminished as I've gotten older. I'll probably put my son in the car as he has the fire and the boy can drive. He has proven he can handle the car so that's where I'm leaning at the moment.

if they would go through and read all these post they would see that its the meeting people, joking, the friendship that peolpe have that makes racing.....people dont go to the track to stand at the hot dog stand and talk about this stuff its here and in the pit.alot of peolpe go to see there friends and buddy that have not seen in a few weeks to help on there car, to be in the mix of racers and not at the local wal-mart talking drag racing come on...but it is what it is now i guess..

Re: why do you race??? - 03/11/11 04:08 PM

I think the few complainers are gonna kill it for the many.

If you want tech only then we can't talk about race events, race results, rule changes/fees and many other race related topics. DUH.

And some like to actually enjoy the fellowship of racing with others.

Maybe there needs to be a "Race Tech. ONLY Forum" along with the UNLAWFL Forum to squelch the few.

Me, what little racing I've done but still plan to when I get either car done, is to enjoy the unbridled HP of something "I" built with my hands. So, it's not just the competition, but a building of ones own abilities. This probably compensates for my lack of abilities in athletics as a youth. We do what we find we can do best.

My reasons have evolved as my race program has evolved, that said there are many reasons.

When I was a tnt'er it was all about new bests, learning how to tune the car, etc. Had little to do with driving. Speed rush.

When you actually start racing you learn early on the losing SUCKS, so you work on your driving and racing strategy. Competitive nature.

When you improve it is about turning on win lights and making final rounds.
Winning some money and getting some ink is just a bonus. I won't ever go to a race that I don't think I can win... I do enjoy the comraderie of hanging out with the guys.

If I had not got in to drag racing I would have drank my liver into the trash can years ago. There is something new and interesting every year, made allot of good bus contacts, also made some friends who would lay down in traffic for you without question. It has also shown me to Not judge a book by its cover.

It's in my blood! I'm a second generation racer, and I grew up at the local tracks. My dad woul race any and every car he could get his hands on, and was deadly with a four speed. Here's dad in 1976:

One of his many race cars...

Most of a little story written about him in '76 in the Norwalk Dragway "Eliminator" magazine...

Very easy answer for me...The quality time i get to spend with my son, whether it's in the shop working on our cars,on the road going to a race or at the race itself.Nothing better than a father and son team.Oh Yea,trailering all those brand-x cars and going fast with usually the only headsup MOPAR there is like icing on the cake!!!!!!!

Re: why do you race??? - 03/11/11 11:07 PM

I'm an acceration junky. After I made my first 11 second run,it was all over. I was always trying to go faster, but couldn't affort a 10 second car. My friend set me straight "You only need to go as fast as your ego demands". I can't race anymore because of physical issues, but I still love tinkering with my car. I come from the 60's and back then, you were not really a racer unless you built your own stuff. I may not have built the best engine in the world, but I had the joy and sorrow of running my engine. I would rather not have had the sorrow. You don't learn if you don't mske mistakes

I like this one above!!
For me its all the above and more
I love the mechanical end of it engine ,trans, chassis work, painting
I hang out out my shop lots
I love the getting ready part mental & physical
I love racing something different
I love the competition
I love trying to constantly improve (go faster ,cut better lights, be more consistant)
Above all else its the people and friendships I've made through the years. Two weeks ago Joe Smith former stk & s/s nhra world champ came and hung out with us (his younger brother towed my trailer and car to Dallas Raceway when my truck went down)This made foranother great experience.
I could go on and on but Drag Racing is my sanity saver!

Re: why do you race??? - 03/12/11 04:55 AM

I had to go to the track after beating all of the local"fast " street cars in my area, nobody would play with me anymore, even for fun I was introduce to power and speed at around 17 yrs old when a freinds brother in law took me for a ride in a street roadster he had made out of old car parts, 1930 Model A frame, 1923 Dodge roadster pick up bucket, home made sheet metal pickup bed, 1957 Oldsmobile J2 engine and three speed stick trans and a 1949 Olds rear end mounted into the Model A frame. That old street rod spun the dog snout out of the 8.20x15 recap bias ply tires fishtailing back and forth in 1st and 2nd gear like crazy I loved it Been hooked every since I did quit once in 1988, I took up flying because I always wanted to do that, I found out that flying was a lot of work and not much fun, unless I was doing aerobatics Thats a hoot I've dranked, chased women, but I didn't catch many , but I caught a real keeper, my wife of 46 yrs I've rode motorcyles in the desert at or above the safe speeds , dune buggys also. Had a ski boat and so on. Drag racing keeps coming back to me, I don't think there is a cure In all honesty I like building cars and making them go fast safely, I like beating the competitors, even when where friends Maybe someday it(the need) will go away, maybe not

SHURE DOES A GREAT JOB OF CLEARING THE MIND........

When you are behind the wheel trying to control something out of control your not thinking about Work, Bills or the narrow minded people whoes only reason in life is to upset everthing around them..............

Just a form of meditation with a little adrenalin thrown in........

And the smell of ruber and race gas is nice too.

I am just a part time racer as I consider my 63 a street/strip car. I gotta admit I love the attention our older muscle cars get when driving them and when racing them. I only race a few times a year and it is mostly for fun as I enjoy trying out new things on the car and seeing how they work. Besides I figure our muscle cars were built to go fast and there is nothing better then the rush when your cars hooks hard on the launch and pins you back in the seat. Ron

thanks mike, I'll make you proud this season,
I can't explain why I want to race, its like explaining why I need to breath.

Why do I drop my 300 down into the autostick and race the car next to me to the first drive? (not with tires squealing and speed, but the speed limit and in my mind neck and neck to the line, do i need to dump him or take the stripe???) why do I press my cruise button in when at a red light and try and let go as soon as i see the green?

I race because I love the competition and the enviroment that you get while at the races. I go to races for the people. when I'm not racing I'm working at a race track.

My earliest childhood memory is off hiding in the back of my dads new yorker as a jet dragster blew over trees at Crestview when I was 4 or 5 years old, some people race because its engrained in who they are.

Wish I could do that now. Now I still run junk and run low tens still shifting those gears.

That's a gooder!!!

I don't know if I actually LIKE being poor, I'm so used to spending money we don't have on the car, it's just natural.
If I actually had spare money, I'm sure I'd still pour it into racing!!
Seriously though, It's about the most enjoyable thing aside from fishing that I do. Besides that, my wife has been in it with me for going on 40 years....her dad raced alot and we used to make a lot of trips with him.
Also, my son loves racing, his wife and my grand kids love it too. Too bad Grandpa is so inconsistent....getting too old and periodically tend to snooze at the lights!!
Something drastic would have to happen for me to hang up my helmet.

I do alot of design work... I have my paper and a calculator
in there so I spend a fair bit of time seeing if a
idea will work... to me thats fun... when I'm building
a new car I lay in bed thinking of design issue all
the time before I fall asleep (I've been known to get

Re: why do you race??? - 03/13/11 06:53 PM

The friends and camraderie... I`ve been racing for over twenty five years and have met a lot of friends both Mopar and Brand X and that I cherish. The Winning and the feeling that goes with it, seeing your name in National Dragster etc. I had a mid 10 second car and had fun working on it trying to go faster but with the NHRA Division changing the E.T. breaks to 9.00, I didn`t feel competitive and didn`t have the $$$ to build a 9 second motor. I put on DOT tires and a throttle stop that is nothing more than a bolt to keep the secondaries from opening fully and changed Classes from Pro/Heavy to Street ( 11.50-19.99)and I`m having a blast! My car was always its best when running in the 11s and going 11.50s I`m one of the fastest cars in the Class having to catch almost everyone. Now I see how the 9.00 guys feel in Pro being the faster car does have its advantages. Last season was my best in all my years of racing, qualifying for the Bracket finals for the third straight year, finishing 4th in Points and getting some $$$ for it and the four Wins put me on a racing " high" that lasted for months. I also race my 92 D150 and always go rounds with it too, just knowing that I can be competitive in it and my Dart has done wonders for my confidence and knowing that has made racing a lot more fun for me and that is a great feeling.
