Re: ? DIAPER OPINIONS WANTED - 03/03/11 12:20 AM

so what is it made out of,denim, canvis awning, shower curtain.[being a wise guy]
if it is not balistic what is the point if it wont hold oil?
i guess i just dont understand what good it is.i am not trying to be a jerk here.

Re: ? DIAPER OPINIONS WANTED - 03/03/11 12:48 AM

it is 2 layers of treated duck cloth.tuff like denim.
inner liner is same as material on an ironing board
i guess it is an attempt to keep as much oil as possible off the track. i suppose indy thinks it is better to have something than nothing. i would say it would hold most of the oil if a rod popped. most bigblocks i've seen go, due to the extended sides of the block extending below the crank centerline, do a pretty good job of containing the parts.

Re: ? DIAPER OPINIONS WANTED - 03/03/11 01:20 AM

i know what you mean about the rods.i am sure it will work as you are thinking.just not the best.you gunna wrap the headers by the tube touching?

Re: ? DIAPERO PINIONS WANTED - 03/03/11 01:22 AM

Looks like a nice, well fitted job.

I don't know what the requirements are for the diaper (non-SFI type). Does it need to contain an absorbant mat? Does it need to cover any of the front (between damper and oil pan)?

If it meets the track rules, those oil pan studs to hold the front should make it easier to remove to change the oil. And I assume the starter is outside the diaper, so starter access should be fine.

Re: ? DIAPERO PINIONS WANTED - 03/03/11 01:33 AM

From the link on Josh's post to yellow bullet, this is an excerpt from the NHRA rule book (where SFI containment is required). It could be used as a guide for other applications.

Quote:

Lower Engine Containment Device must cover the sides of the block and pan up to within one inch of the head mating surface and extend to within 1 1/2 inches of the front and rear of the cylinder case area

Are you going to sell them to Moparts.com members with BB Chrysler engines? I am considering one as I see the hand writing on the wall for "fast" bracket cars in the future (2012+)

it should be lined with a oil absorbing mat like the company new pig makes

Removable pieces of absorbant mat would be good for yearly cleaning.

Tommy, that looks pretty slick! We have these oil absorbent matts at the shop that are meant to contain oil spills. I wonder if you could line it with something like that??? Might make it kind of thick, though. I wonder what other kind of material it could be made of that may be less prone to melting? Fit looks great!

looks good, maybe check into some melt proof patches to sew on near the headers, and line it with absorbent pads.

should satisfy them for a bracket race

Thats a nice job Tom... did you use a standard sewing
machine or a industrial one.... I'll have to look into
making one myself.... I do have a industrial machine
plus I know where to get absorbent pads
