Fuel prices got me down, Project neon in the works. - 03/02/11 11:12 PM

With the cost of fuel rising everyday I had the chance to try some thing new. Found this on craigs list. I junked a car and it paid for the complete set up. I have a 99 RT DOHC 2L its going to go on. This is my first time working with a turbo. I posted in the other forum but not many replies there. If you can help me in any way please post. Thanks for your time...Phill

Well I figured a turbo 4 would be a lot better then a twin turbo v8. Ive never installed one before and thought this would be a good learning curve. Maybe im wrong? I dont know. I though we had some 4 banger guys on here but ive had no luck with any help yet for this install. This is all new to me. Im a v8 guy.....

I recently upgraded the turbo on a 4 cylinder Ford car.. The install of the turbo was pretty easy.. everything is tight, but with a little thought, it all goes together rather simply...

The problem I'm having is upgrading the computer.. We installed one of those MegaSquirt aftermarket computers and cant seem to make heads or tails of the timing and fuel..

So my recommendation to you Phil, is to get the computer upgrades all set before you start wrenchin on the Neon..

If it is a good basic car ...fix-it-up and sell it. The reason why I don't like a turbo-car as a daily driver or econ-car is that you have to run premium in it and it does not get nearly the MPG of a regular 4 banger.

Why do you think the mileage would become worse than it was prior to being a turbo? (other than keeping your foot in it more)

Phil- I would check with Howell automotive- the will have the pcm you will need and possibly the ducting as well. I believe they were into turboing the Gen 1's before anybody else came along.

Check with Forward motion, they have been into turbo mopars since I can remember, I once had a turbo daytona and got all my stuff for it from them, 28 psi boost.

Looks like it should work good and still get good milage and im sure it will be fun to drive. Cant beat a turbo on a driver Im sure they make a tuner or you might be able to get it reflashed from someone that knows whats going on.

I went with a Snow performace Meth inject kit so I could run 93 in this. 104 and 110 are about $7/gallon I think. I don't know why you couldn't use meth injection and run 89.

Is E-85 available in your area? If so, have you considered setting it up to run it?

BOOSTED MOPARS

Turbo DODGE

Turbo MOPAR

NEONs.ORG

Dodge Garage - see the FWD TECH

Lots of info on the internet including reprogramming the SMEC/SBEC controllers.

Turbo's are neat and a lot of fun on the street.

You can buy a mega squirt design for your neon plugs into the orginal harness I think the only extra at the computer is a vac line for the map sensor. Will even be set up to run your ais and alt. DIYautotune sells them also a guy up here in Canada that makes them and puts in your sbec housing

BECAUSE the turbo cars are set-up to run BESTest with boost .... I have had many 2.2 cars with turbos and NOT.... and the MPG on a non-turbo car is much better.

Now the fun-factor ? ...can't argue with that. I had a GLH ...that was a tonsOfun.

What's the chances that the clutch, transaxle, and axles will take the extra strain for very long?

Had a turbo lebaron 5 speed that I messed with 20 years ago that would kill a 302 mustang and got 37 mpg on the hwy.

I was told that if I kept it under 8psi boost I could run the stock ECU. But was also told to put SRT4 injectors in it. Im looking for a helping hand on this install. Bolting everything together and running the oil line to the pan in not hard but getting it to run right afterwords is where I need the help. I thank all of you guys for the info posted thus far. I will change my name when we hit the track this spring, since its 1/8th mile, I might be 8 sec Phill....LOL
