Anyone using 7/16 pushrods??? - 02/11/11 01:49 AM

Did you have to clearance your block to accomodate these? I am using a MP Mega block.
Thanks Mike

Shouldn't have to clearance the block but you'll most likely need to whittle on the heads a bit.

I switched my 527 bracket motor to Manton 7/16 ball and cup from 3/8 ball and ball(switch heads and rockers) I had to trim the 440-1 heads with the 7/16 pushrods, didn't need to with the 3/8 pushrods on the SR heads Put them in and check for rubbing Both sets of rockers,T&D and Harland Sharps are 1.65 ratio so that does play a part in the pushrods rubbing

I didnt have to touch the block for 7/16 tapered
PRs but had to remove a ton of material from my B-1M/Cs

Thanks for the replys.
Mr. P body, what block are you using and are the tapered 7/16 pushrods ones just as strong ?. I have never seen any of those.
Thanks Mike

Although you can make 7/16 pushrods work on INDY heads, it gets tight and takes lots of grinding. Unless you are just running insane spring pressure, usually a set of 3/8 pushrods with a .120 wall will do the trick.

How much open and closed spring pressure do you plan on running ?

What is the intended useage of this engine?

I sold all my B-1m/c stuff along with the mega block
but I was going to use the 7/16 tapered instead of 3/8"
straight because of high spring pressures(around 1000
or more open) but I clearanced the heads for them

The bigger the pushrod, the better! Steve Morris, told me that he runs 9/16" pushrods in most of his larger engines. He said that he gained 43 hp from switching from 1/2" to 9/16" on his engine.

I have 7/16 in mine with a low deck and Indy heads.

I think the only place I ran into problems was the end of the heads #1 #2 #7 #8 exhaust.

Had to clearance them a bit.

Running 7/16 in my R5 no clearancing required. Totally different animal as well....

Mike, I'm not Mr Pbody but here is a picture of a 7/16 single tapered pushrod on the right, straight 7 1/6 in the middle and a 3/8 on the left side(looking down at them ) I tried using 8 7/16 single tapered to avoid trimming the heads on the intake sides, it didn't work The 440-1 heads use a offset intake rocker and I didn't want to change the intake rollers to offsets so I tried the single tapered pushrods instead, that didn't work either I ended up using them on the exhaust sides and used the straight .095 wall x 7/16 diameter on the intakes BTW, the single tapered I ordered are .167 wall on the straight 7/16 part and end up being .120 at the 3/8 tapered ends IHTHs

I run 3/8 intake 7/16 exhaust stock block and b1 heads. But like mr body said, had to remove tons of material from the heads

any real world gains by switching to thicker/larger pushrods? I have .080 wall 3/8 and was thinking of going to .135 wall 3/8. B1MC heads with 350 seat and 920 open.

Thanks all for the reply's and for the pictures CAB !
I am changing roller cams on my 572 with the 572-13 heads. The spring pressures I am changing to are right with Mr. P body's are at 1000. I had been using 3/8 .080 pushrods with my other cam( 800 +) pressure but Chuck at Best Machine suggested going with the better springs and pushrods. He also suggested the tapered pushrods should help if I run into problems with the head clearance.
Thanks Mike

I just mocked up my mega block which previously had 3/8" pushrods. There were slight witness marks at the very top of the inner lifter valley. My 7/16" tapered pushrods fit. Though they were very close. A little grinding was all that was needed. The heads needed a little also. I have -1s

I switch pushrods on the dyno my bracket motor when it had the SR heads and T&D rockers arms on it. I had a set of Smith Bros 3/8x.083 that they custom made for the motor(I wanted thicker but they insisted that .083 was more than enough for 275 lbs and 680 lbs openedOne of them broke in the middle during a dyno pull ) that I ended up replacing (after I fixed the motor) during another dyno session. I switch from the .083x3/8 Smiths to a set of .120 wallx3/8 diameter sereis 3 Mantons with no other changes, the motor made 8 HP more and the peak HP RPM went up 300 RPM I know there is more HP and valve train benifits in better pushrods than most people think BTW, you might want to try a set of 7/16 x.095 if they will fit
