Indoor Drag Racing Photos - 01/18/11 07:29 PM

Jack emailed me some pictures from when they raced inside the Chicago Ampitheater back in the 63. Jack used to race Super Stock back then, and actually raced there a couple times. They definately had more nerve back then than most people do now, there's no way I would try to drive/stop a Super Stock car through the support beams of a building like that. Enjoy!

Can you imagine the carbon monoxide level in that building?

I've seen a few crash pictures from this place as well.

I was there. The air was BAD inside - and unsafe racing IMO. Brought my 63 Maxi Plymouth with every intention to race. Took a pass when I saw the setup. When I was a kid, my Dad would take me to watch 1/4 midgets run on a 1/8th mile track inside that place. You could get high breathing the alcohol fumes .

The track was 440 ft. long, 60 ft. wide, and had 600 ft. of shutdown area... and the shutdown area was full of I-beams and ceiling supports.

Atleast you could go racing even if it was raining out. Very cool pics. Ron

The shutdown area was down right scarry if you were anywhere near 100mph. My car was brand new and I didn't want to smash it up. To make things worse, traction was not very good - on ether end.

I saw a picture of that place when they were racing and there was a 1963 Dodge, aluminum front end, Max Wedge that was very smashed up. Anyone have that picture.
