67 Hemi S/S cars - 01/16/11 05:24 PM
I have thought on and off about putting the histories together on the 67 Hemi S/S cars. These cars always seem to be the red-headed stepchildren of all the Hemi S/S cars. No, they were not as quick as the earlier or later S/S'ers but they are a cool car just the same. Just trying to gauge the support for a project like this.

An interesting note. I always thought the Fink 67 (Quick as a Wink, You can deal with Fink) was a Sox & Martin car because of its paint job. NOT!! Caroll told me their car was the white Hamilton Motors car that they painted.
They are my favorite S/S cars by far.It is just a personal preference, but I always thought they were the best looking S/S cars built.
I agree that they did not have as strong of a package or following though.Too bad.

There goes another 'fact' I had wrong!!! I was always under the impression, assumption, 'older race lore', that it was Sox&Martin's old car. I gave Carroll some old pics of the car I took and he was over joyed with them,,,according to the messenger. I guess it's just another myth/legend busted,,,I am now honestly confused on other race lore I have always reveered!!!
Kinda' like the time I was told there wasn't REALLY a Santa Claus....
I agree, very overlooked cars. I attempted tp start one a couple years ago, however I must say that i didn't get much in the way of responses. If you or anyone else would like to rekindle the effort I'd be willing to help.

Mark,
I for one would really enjoy any information that could be provided on RO and WO cars.
The car currently on Ebay made wonder if a registry for these cars had ever been attempted.
They, I believe are the rarest of all the HEMI special package cars.
These along with the A12 and '68 HEMI A-body cars are my favorite.
Go for it.

Mark, if you do this, what kind of info are you going to research?
Will it be things like;
How the cars were built or equipped? (block stampings, carbs, shifter, bell housing, wheels, etc)
Original and later race histories?
Will there be a registry for current owners?

As for Ray Christian, he raced 4 67 Hemi Belvederes and one Hemi Coronet w-o car named "The Beeleiver"owned at that time by Starkey. The 67 cars that he raced were, a 67 Hemi Belvedere 2 door sedan with a Hemi Scoop ( that he built), a 67 Hemi Belv.hardtop called "The Harrisburg missel",( that he built and I bought in 1973), a white Hemi Belv. with red frosted paint around the edges, and a real nice silver Hemi 67 Belv. Hardtop. One of the last 2 that I mentioned caught fire out in front of his shop and again, one of those 2 cars Ray told me was the old Jere Stahl car. Another one of the local 67's was raced by Sam Brooks , and was called "White Lightning". Then there was a guy named Gorden Wallace, AKA,"Buzzy" Who raced a 67 Hemi Belv. Then there was "The Roar-N-Hemi" owned by Phil Roar. Marcusic was the original owner of that car, then Dave Miller, then Sam Brooks, then Phil Roar and then to the present owner. Phil Roar had 3 original r-o cars and has a wealth of info. I just talked to him today about this stuff , and I should talk to Sam Brooks too. As for Ben Morgan , don't remember him having a Hemi car. He was world famous for his Max Wedge cars.If someone is going to do a CORRECT history on these cars, they should get started NOW while the original drivers are still around.

Ah, a tale of yore – In 1967, I wanted a 67 Street Hemi car - and went to my local Dodge dealer. He looked for one, and found one (white with black 4 speed) in Pahokee, Florida (no joke) – well hooked up the trailer, and with one of his sales people - headed to Pahokee - it is on the south side of Lake Okeechobee – picked up the car, with the headers, battery, and carb isolator in the trunk, and decided to drive it home – and I did - oh well another that has disappeared.

I've been trying to get a picture of the "BeeLiever" car from Starkey but they might have been lost to time.. That was one of the hardest leaving '67 cars back in the day. I remember the Division 3 point race NTR in '72. It left the line with only one wheel on the ground. I stored it in my garage for a year or so then one day Starkey told me it was sold. I was crushed...I would have bought it if I'd known it was for sale.
From what I remember, it used a cut down tunnel ram manifold.

No... the car in Miami was a Coronet. From what I recall it had some lettering on it that didn't make any sense to us. Like the Coronet picture you posted. A buddy and I used to spend our free time chasing down Hemi and max wedge cars in south Florida.
strange...I thought I knew all the cars in Homestead but I never saw the Belvedere. I lived on SW 12th st 1973-75.
Markusic... that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. He was killed when his Hemi powered AMX crashed. I talked to him at Bluegrass Dragway...nice guy.

I don't think that this is your car - I think that this is the one that Glenn traded the Hemi Dart (not the Scat Pack one) to Reid Whisnant for. ??

Re: 67 Hemi S/S cars - 01/18/11 06:43 AM
Mark.. I found dozens of cars back then so my list would be too long.
In '77 I had a chance to buy a '68 Dart(body) in Canada. I can't remember his name(McCullum?) but at that time he was the guy to beat in super/stock. You guys know him. I was looking for some Hemi parts and not a car at that time..$4,000
a complete '65 A990 Plymouth...$900
There was a black '64 Savoy Hemi(body) with all the aluminum still intact. Called the "WIDOW MAKER" it was a stones throw from Miami-Hollywood Dragstrip...$500 w/ a single axle trailer included. The last I heard it was bought and the Hemi mounts were torched off so it run a 440.
Back then hemi cars were everywhere and cheap. I turned down buying a '67 Hemi GTX because I didn't want to pay $350.
Don't get me wrong.. I did have a collection. Mostly '63 max wedges.

Mark, you probably are right about the Warfel Scat Pak car. Looking at the picture, that car was an automatic - I know it would have been easy to change, but was Reid's car an automatic ??

Mark, another interesting sidelight - the class on the side of the Warfel car is SS/BA - originally that was the classification of those cars - headsup with the A990 cars - a year or so later, they were moved down in classification

Bob - do you have any pics of the Myl car back as-raced? Jim is a great guy, I went to Pitt with his nephew John and was the best man in his wedding over the summer, was great hanging out with Jim and Melissa and the whole family.
Just curious how that RO looked back in the day.

Here are a couple of MI cars. I will have to ask Jim Keyes if this is a factory S/S - Anyone know anything about it?
Mark J
If my memory serves me correct the red Dodge is not an S/S car, but it is a street hemi, and he is the original owner and still has it. The car was featured in Muscle Cars magazine a few years ago. Jim does own a white 67 Plymouth S/S car that is fully restored.

[Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean]- the 67 Coronet in the 2002 auto imagery photo was owned and raced by Phil Collins, later repainted to red/white/blue, later sold to Russ Abrahms in Michigan, not an original car.

Anybody have any info about the early days of my car?My dad bought it off a used car lot in or around Spokane,WA around '81.It is a factory 440 car but in the right angle in the sun you can barely see SS/FA 333 on the c pillar. Also C&V Dodge Moses Lake,WA on the door. Was wearing red line tires and had the fenders notched for fenderwell headers when my dad got it.Rumor was 2 brothers had it early on.Never knew if they actually raced it or?

I have always lusted after the WO/RO "package" cars. Nice thread!
Off the top of my head I can think of two cars not mentioned in this thread:
1) Hemi Joel of FAST racing fame has an RO car. If anyone is in contact with him perhaps they can ask him to share some info with us.
2) When I lived in WI and attended the annual Quaden Dodge show there was a '67 WO car trimmed out as a Coronet "500" model. IIRC it was a white four speed car with a black or red interior. It was featured in a few of the mopar rags way back.
On a side note I always wondered why they never made a package car out of the '66-67 Chargers? It seems like they had the weight in the right places and could be trimmed for a reasonable race weight. The obvious answer would be "too damned ugly!"
(I own a '66)
Thanks to everyone sharing info in the thread!

I don't think Patchens car was a WO car. Some pictures of it have a flat R/T hood, and another shows it with R/T taillights. Never hear much talk about that car. Used to hear about Rivers LO23 car a little, but those that knew the cars are fading away.
As for the HEMI Blues, Joel knows the history of the car, and has talked with the original owner. It's currently waiting to be restored.

Collin & Jones, they were also discussed in the SS/DA thread with their history laden Cuda convert. Now this car does look familiar. Since Finks did not get their car from S&M maybe this is where it went. Although from what I can tell with the hood scoop(s) maybe this is the 440 car.

Frito-On the Collins and Jones 67 Hemi car, Phil said they bought it from Sox and Martin after a race- took it home directly from the track.I don't know the history on the car, they might have had 2 67's. I do beleive that one was a "Sox and Martin prepared" car, not actually raced by S&M- I believe that vehicle is currently in KC in S&M paint colors.

Re: 67 Hemi S/S cars - 02/05/11 02:54 AM
I am not sure on the 67 cars but on the 68 cars they raced quite a few. Contrary to what most people might think, they were not the original owners on many of them. I know for fact that they sold (at least some of) their 68 cars in 68, 69, 70. S&M bought alot of cars from racers - set them up - sometimes re-painted them and sold them but I know that some of these also were been turned into S&M raced cars as well. They had new cars in 69, 70 & the one Ronnie raced in 74.

This car was called UNREAL on the side of the car. The other was called Coyote and I thought it had a 440 in it and if I remember it was a S&M car. Thanks / Gary

I don't remember much if anything about that car. Got any photos when he owned it. It would surprise me if a car that came through a Kansas City dealership would be Don's.

I think Don's 66 cars were both bought through Cable Chrysler. I am pretty sure one was not an original Hemi car and it was a conversion he made. I thnk that car was white.
1966 was the first year he had some factory backing as he had beat up some factory racers with his Max Wedge car at a National event and caught Ma Mopar's eye. His first deal was strictly a parts deal where he had to buy the car or have a sponser buy the car.
This was his status with Chrysler up to early 1968. His 68 Cuda was owned by Cable until early in the 68 race season when Chrysler signed him to a full racer sponsership and Performnce Clinic contract. At that point Chrysler bought the 68 Cuda from Cable and gave it to Don.
This information comes from conversations with Don when I spent a few days with him in 2008.

Isn't this Don's '66?
Edmonds sponser instead of Cable but it has Housh Automotive on it just like on his '63 maxie ans '67 RO23. It also looks like that could be his name on the door. The car I know of was delivered to KC dealer, don't know if it sold there or possibly transfered to another dealer.

Re: 67 Hemi S/S cars - 03/27/11 09:30 PM
I think you are correct and this car did not run under the Cable name. As I mentioned earlier I thought his 66s went through Cable but I could be wrong.
Don also mentioned that he did do some local weekend racing with another car.
I just remember a photo of a white 66.
I will check and post what I find.

For some reason I don't remember much about that car. However with Housh Automotive on the fender it sure looks like one. I am pretty sure that is his name on the door as well.
Regardless of where the car was delivered I am sure it would have the sound deadner deleted. If you can tap of the roof and it sounds like a tin can that would mean something.

no, the car wasn't wrecked, lost the front fender and pushed the door handle in and quarter panel, but my friend and i spent about a month pushing out everything so nothing, other than the fender was lost. oh, both bumpers were bent byond repair but i replaced those also. jim drain, florida, helped with the locating of an nos fender & bumpers. i picked up alot of spare parts, just in case, but wound up not using them. most everything else was pushed back into place by myself. totally it took many months but she's back waiting for a new motor. dave #1355 ss/ea

The Silver Bullet is a 66 426 street hemi Satellite walt ramsden owned, my dad turned into a super stocker in 1966. You can see it at Jim Marlets site since he was there photographing in 66'. He also owns a NHRA record in Super Stock. It's nice to know that in 67 mopars still, no matter how much the weighed, could still run. I think of it just like the infancy of pro stock, before they started adding weight to the mopars so the chevy's and fords could compete. I am not here so say you are wrong or what not, I'm just saying I love the old stories about the war on chevy's and ford's. Did you know my dad wore a wig and sunglasses and drove shirley shahan's super stocker to qualify in Tulsa? Sometimes somethings never get told about what happened unless you were there. The internet is only half of the truth. Steve

You mean 1967 Hemi GTX (original 440 car).
"In the late ‘60s the Sunoco had become a nightly hangout for what was to become Chrysler’s “Direct Connection” gang. An assortment of Chrysler engineers that included Dick Maxwell and Tom Hoover, the man affectionately known as the “Father of the Hemi.” They were there to test speed parts on the street, plain and simple.
Well, one of the cars that were used as rolling test labs was a blue 440-4-barrel powered ’67 Plymouth GTX that was used for drag testing. The car had never been titled. It was snatched right off the back lot, used and abused, and eventually given to Jimmy Addison. The 440 came out, in went a lightened Hemi K-member, followed by a heavily massaged 1968 426 Hemi, the manual-shift tranny, and a Dana 60 rear end with a set of 4.56’s and a pinion snubber for traction.
In initial drag tests in ’69 at Motor City Dragway (rented by Terry Cook, then editor of Car Craft Magazine) Jimmy ran a low e.t. of the meet thru-the mufflers 11.89 at 121 mph and an uncapped 11.34 at 127. Not too shabby, eh? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
As the weeks went by, Jimmy began making the new car into the quintessential street runner of the day. To make it lighter he took several hundred pounds of weight off the body by using fiberglass body parts and drilling huge holes in anything he could. He then modified the rear wheel wells by slitting them and forcing them outward, in order to fit a wider slick in back. And he worked evenings removing metal (with a hand grinder) from the interior of the Hemi block so the half-inch CSC stroker crank would spin freely, and a set of A990 aluminum heads and a Racer Brown roller cam were added for good measure.
The trick exhaust system was fabricated from three-and-a-half-inch pipe with two runners coming off each header and running through four reworked Cadillac mufflers. The body was then finished and prepped and the car was painted silver.
One day while Terry Cook was at the station, Jimmy took the car out for a little run off the 14 Mile light. As Cook watched Jimmy launch, with virtually no tire smoke, he mentioned that it looked like a silver bullet being fired from a gun. The name stuck, and the legendary team of Jimmy Addison and his Silver Bullet was born."

I love these cars, and want my street Belvedere to look like one. New hood and scoop are going to be added soon. My question is... How important is it to have the Belvedere I chrome along the body? I've gathered it up, just don't know about the effort to get it installed.

Back on the first page of this thread I posted a photo of Dave LecLaire in his Plymouth. I hope nobody objects if I post another photo of the same car.

Stewart,
I don't think that this is your car - I think that this is the one that Glenn traded the Hemi Dart (not the Scat Pack one) to Reid Whisnant for. ??
52savoy, did you ever come across any 68 S/S Hemi Darts or Barracudas?
Thanks,
Mark J
Hello! I just found this thread and had to join! Awesome stuff! I bought that car a short time ago from Jim Kramer. I have to ask: I own that car. It was sold new out of Lenox Dodge to Jim Peavy. It was the Barnett SS/BA car after a trade, then Reid Whisnant's, then Glen Warfel's and finally Smokin Joe. Does anyone know any history, or have photos?

I was surprised to see this car at the Mopars At The Strip. I have a photo of it running at Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania that is on the first page of this thread.

Has anyone come with a list of the RO/WO23 cars then and now? Especially the 4 speed cars. (Kind of partial to them)
Picked this one up in May 2015. Guy I bought the car from has two other 4 speed RO cars.

That is cool, what are the particulars? If I could pick one car to own it would be a 67 RO or WO car.

Does anyone know anything about Keith Millage's 67 Hemi car? Where it came from - where it went to? Anyone have better pictures?
Mark J
I bought and sold to a cop in Canada. Good car FE

Car was from around Springfield MO. in the 80's. Raced when new, then at some time put on the street, heater and radio added. It was never cut or rusted. Unfortunately, car was repainted so any of its racing war paint is gone, unless something is underneath the crappy repaint.
Of the other two 4 speeds one was from the Boston area, raced as "Poison Ivy". The other was purchased new in Allentown PA and street raced mostly.

HEMI Joel also owns a RO23 4 speed car out of the Boston area. Car was called the HEMI Blues.

R.I.P. Bill "Ramsmoke" Nugent.
Passed away a few weeks ago. 80 years old - sudden heart attack.
This was his factory 67 Hemi Dodge.

RAMSMOKE II, Awesome rig, no front brakes.
The car has a 66 grille and front bumper, the rocker trim is 66 500, or 67 R/T specific.

I'm not sure if its this one, but one of the Ramsmoke cars ended up going off the end of the track at Union Grove WI - ended up in the field across Highway KR.

Is 8 years too long to reply? Talked to the Canadian who raced a record holding '68 Dart in the mid to late 70s. He was selling the car(roller) for 4K but life got in the way and I never talked with him again. What was his name.. McCullum?
