Cubic inches- vs- Boost?

Cubic inches- vs- Boost? - 01/13/11 09:27 PM

Power and driveability wise what would be more feasable?
I have a 383 in the car now and am putting a B&M 174 Supercharger on it.
But it has 9.25 comp. in it now w/KB pistons.
9.25 is too much so short of cutting on the pistons,OR custom pistons I may end up with a decision.
However I have TEN 440`s and a couple would only need freshened to be ready for what I want to do and they would already be low-comp, and also the piston choices for 440`s are many.

440 with say 5--6lbs. boost
OR
383 with 8--10lbs. of boost?
What would make more power all else being equal?

Just like any motor, the more cubes the more power you will make, equals to equals. However, I don't know that blower size is, so I don't know if it will even work on the bigger cubes.

I'd go with the 440 with 5 lbs. boost. But, you'll have to get a different blower manifold for the 440.

I have both B and RB intakes for the blower.
I "assumed" more cubes would work as well but, was throwing it out there for those with more experience on this stuff

That's a bit small of a blower for a 440. It's displacement would be better suited for a 383. IIRC, a blower like that, pushed to its limit would only be able to make 5 or so pounds of boost on a 440. Really if all things were equal between the two, so same supercharger gearing ratios, same heads, cam, exhaust, etc I bet they would both perform similarly on the 1/4 mile.

Both engines would have great driveability.

Hands down I would pick the bigger 440 motor. Less Boost = less Problems.

But the 383 with double the boost would make even more power then the 440 at half the boost.IMO mike

Did you buy the setup on here out of Chicago?

I don't know if the 383 could make double the boost w/ that small blower. Boost is really just a measure of resistance. It's more about getting the air/fuel into the chamber. For example a stockish 440 w/ unported heads, exhaust manis and 2.5 exhuast might show 6psi of boost, however a ported aluminum headed 440, w/ RPM intake, big tube headers and nice 3" exhaust would show 3-4. Same amount of air is being pushed by the same unit, however the stockish 440 is more restrictive.
That small 174 unit could feed a mild 440. FWIW my old stockish 440 ran 12.90 before boost and 12.0 after about 5.5lbs of boost. I'd think that a mild 440 w/ 5psi of boost would out perform a mild 383 w/ 8lbs.

I agree, it is on the small side for 440 cubes. But, it will still make enough steam for fun street driving. Put at least an 850 cfm double pumper on it.

Either combination would make good power for the street, but I would have to agree that bigger cubic inches and less boost is better. You could always turn the blower up with a pulley change to get even more. Spinning the blower slow has less parasitic horsepower loss. My biggest concern would be the hypertetic pistons. Make sure that the top ring has plenty of end-gap and go forged as soon as possible. Sounds like a fun ride.
