Guess My Weight (A vs. E body)

Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 01:19 AM

Ive seen post like this many times but I never paid attention. Me and my brother were discussing the weight of my car, (a topic started by the A vs E body thread). Its a 72 demon, all steel, smallblock, 727, dana 60, all glass, full 3' exhuast, factory rear and front bucket seats, console.

He thinks its alot lighter than his 72 Challenger, which is all steel, dana 60, 727, all factory interior, small block.. basically the same specs but an ebody.

What say ye? Am I alot lighter?

EDIT: His has power steering and mine is manual.

Just a guess but I'd say the E body was at least 300lb heavier.

As I said in the A vs. E, my all metal, smallblock, 727, full interior '73 Duster weighs almost exactly the same as my husband's all metal, smallblock, 727, full interior '72 Challenger. Both weighed on the same certified scale. 3,300 pounds for my Duster, 3,340 pounds for his Challenger.

Earlier A-bodies are lighter. My '73 has the big chrome bumpers and reinforced doors.

The short answer is yes your "A" body is almost certainly lighter, probably by at least the 300lbs. mentioned. Challengers tend to be heavier than similarly equipped 'Cudas due in part to their 2in. longer wheelbase and I know from weighing my old Duster and comparing it to the weight of my aluminum headed "Cuda that the "A"s are lighter. FWIW I used the same scale for both cars.

Take both cars to a scale on the same day, if possible, and find out I'm thinking that the SB 1972 E body is 200 to 300 lbs. heavier than the 1972 SB A body like your is Let us know what the differences are if you weigh them, lots of people on here would love to konw

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 09:49 AM

my 72 BB challenger was 3850 with me in it! my 71 dart is 3450 with me in it(aluminum block)! take away the fact the block is prolly 100lbs lighter and the difference would be about 300lbs lighter! im guessing sb cars would follow suit! so ill say 300 range as already mentioned!

both of ya just go pull in junk yard scale at the same time and find out I guess!

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 05:21 PM

300 sounds right but remember that 70-72 cars are lighter than 73-74's because they lacked all the later bumper and door beam mass. so when comparing it would need to be the same model year.

Nearly everything is heavier on an E body, hood, doors, windshield, much wider too. Even worse the parts that are as light or lighter (like the trunk lid) are in ther back. A bodies also have better weight distribution and more rear overhang
helps launching....even if they weighed the same.
An e body isn't really significantly lighter than a pre 71 b body with the same motor.

i find this so hard to believe. i have done a my share of weight removal and cant come close to 3340. i just dont think that can be correct. even if i wasnt in my car it would still be heavier than that

I have a freind who has a 1970 Challenger(started life as a 1971 318 3 speed stick car) who runs NHRA stock classes with it, currently running the car as a 340 T/A, NHRA in all of its wisdom says it has to weigh the same as a Duster for the same classes they can run in if he puts a four barrel on it 3260 lbs with driver rings a bell You have to know that Mopar did do some scientific information providing to NHRA on all of the 340 cars as far as weight and HP from day one Before NHRA started adding the drivers weight(170 lbs) to the cars we ran a 1970 Hemi Challenger and later I raced a 1970 Hemi Cuda stick car, both of those cars had to weigh over 3420 lbs. for the Cuda and 3470 lbs for the Challenger set up as a R/T to meet the minimum weights at the scales without the driver

Nobody believes it. I can scan the weight sheets from both to prove it though. The scale was certified and used for both cars. I'll warm up the scanner later.

Funny thing is, I guessed the weight of the Challenger almost down to the last pound BEFORE we had it weighed. It felt the same weight pushing it in and out of the garage as my Duster did while building it.

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 06:38 PM

When our Challenger had the 318, 904, 8 3/4 combo in it, weight was over 3700lb with me in it , I'd be around 180lb back then
Going from a mega block 528ci to a Aluminium 572ci the difference in weight was only 70lb, I was expecting a bit more
Weight dist last time we checked was 50.9 / 49.1

me, Chip's cuda (which is shorter and has an aluminum motor), Brad H, Tig are all missing your mark by at least 300 lbs.

mine has race seats, emerg brake gone, alum heads, intake & water pump, fiberglass hood and bumpers, cut up bumper brackets, light weight brakes and aluminum wheels

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 07:10 PM

Wheeels can make a huge difference too, going from Steel Magnum wheels to welds knocked about 80 pounds off of my Charger. BTW...With the welds my 70 R/T 4 speed factory no options 'stripper' weighed 3710 on 2 seperate certified scales...which is light for an Allegedly heavy Charger.

Comparing a 71 challenger to a 73 duster with the same motor would probably be less than 300 (as said in my post above), consequentially a 71 duster to a 74 Challenger would likely be more than 300. you need an 'apples to apples' model year to be consistent in your comparisons.

Wize, is that weight with you in the Charger? I swear my 70 road runner was way lighter than my challenger

A buddy's 572 Aluminium Hemi '70 GTX similar build, ie interior, glass hood, 10.5's, caltracs etc is almost 200lb lighter than mine on the same scales.

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 07:44 PM

no I wish!! ...That was with an all iron 440 and an 833 without me in it (I go about 240).

It has an aluminum head low deck and an auto in it now along with aluminum wp/housing/radiator so I would think it's maybe 3630 or so now.

I've seen several 68-69 roadrunners that were right at 3500 pounds or even a little under...63 fury's are fairly light B bodies too. I doubt a comparable motor E body was ever much lighter, the 70E body had the 71 and later B body architecture which I believe was a wider track and is a bit heavier. The Hide-away wiper designed cowls I would think make for a heavier body as well.

My 1971 street BB 727 Duster with extra insulation under the carpet and above the headliner, radio, heater, race weight fibreglas hood w/Hemi scopp molded on, race fibreglas front bumper with 165SR15 tires on the 3.5 front Bodart wheels , 315x60x15 MT ET Street Radials on 12 incg wide bodart rear wheels, stock 14 gallon gas tank full with 3 inch full exhaust to the rear bumper and my 260+ lbs in the driver seats weighs 3450 lbs on several different NHRA legal scales

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 08:29 PM

Cab my all iron 451 powered 73 Duster with the hidden bumper reinforcement bars removed and a 727 full 3" exhaust weighed 3300....without me in it. that was about 17 yrs ago.

Re: Guess My Weight (A vs. E body) - 12/20/10 08:42 PM

Challenger weight ticket

Duster

We must have one of those midget E-bodies, it's also shorter and not as long as my Duster.

I also weighed my Duster on a different scale(at Milan Dragway) and it still came out the same...3,300 pounds. If the scale where we got the weight tickets was wrong, why was it only wrong on the Challenger?
