12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 01:30 PM

I searched here and found some topics on quicker combos but thought there are many more rides that fall in this group.

So if your willing what did you do to get into the 12's in the 1/4 mile? I am curious as to just how stock some of the cars might have been.

B,RB or SB I don't discriminate

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 02:07 PM

Very easy and cheap.

Just as one simple example, as there are tons more out there that are more highway friendly...

'64 Savoy
3775lb street car

-74 cast crank 440 pulled out of a land yacht in the junkyard. It had overheated and smelled of burnt oil pretty bad. It still turned over, so we cleaned off the filth & grime, threw in a used .509 cam & lifters, swapped out the springs, Team G intake, 750 DP, $20 swap meet headers of unknown origin, 10" converter, 4.56 gears and a 30x9 slick netted us 12.80's. (No valve job or anything. Lots of miles on the engine.) Freshened up the heads, added a factory Max Wedge intake, 600 AFB carbs and got it down to 12.40's. I'm sure it would have run the same or better without the Max Wedge intake, but we wanted to get into NSS racing. This was back in the early/mid 90's...had all of $200 in the motor minus the Max Wedge stuff since we had extra parts laying around. It would have been quicker yet if we had something better than a TCI Streetfighter converter.

Was it an ideal highway cruiser? No. But it was driven everywhere including the highway and it would run on crap gas. Contrary to popular belief, the street manners were fine. It did not run warm, idled in traffic, etc... It's all what you are used to though.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 02:25 PM

I doesn't take much to get in the 12's with nearly any Mopar. A cam, intake, carb, headers, converter, gear and some small slicks should get just about any car in the 12's as long as the weight to cubic inch ratio isn't stupid, like a 318 in a 4200 pound B body.

360 +.030 stock rods, crank, flat top pistons, home ported j's, single plane with 750 dp, TTI's full 2.5" exhaust, small solid 520 lift/ 244 @.050 cam, 3.91 gear, 4K stall, in a 71 demon at 3,460lbs 12.22, at 109.8 mph only time out, needing a jet change.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 02:43 PM

what car? pretty easy to make a high 12 second b-body with a 440. My old 67 coronet weighed 3850 and ran 12.90 @ 104 with a 9:1 .030 over 440, cast junk pistons, stock rods, crank, stock 906 heads, stock valve trane, Summit 488 cam, RPM intake Holley 750Dp, Cheap headers, Mopar 175k converter (2600), MP shift kit, and 3.91's.
You can do it with 383's and SB's but it will cost you much more.
A 10:1 440, with alum heads or ported iron heads, 500+ lift cam, headers, RPM intake 750-850DP, 2800 stall and 3.91's will get a 3800lb B-body into the mid 12's easy. In an A-body you'll be in the 11's.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 02:55 PM

My 360 started as a .040 over Napa rebuilt short block. I took it apart to check everything. I had the block decked (deck .015 head 63cc., gasket .028, compression 10.51)reversed the cast dished pistons on the rods and put in good rod bolts and had the rods resized. I put in an old Manley cam that I had. 443 lift 224@.050 I don't remember the lobe seperation but I think it was around 108. I used J heads pocket ported with 2.02 int. valves and 273 adj. rockers an LD340 intake with a 1" 4 hole spacer and a Vac. 750. For exhaust I used heddmen 1 5/8" headers, 3" exhaust with ultra flows ending at the axel. I used a 904 with a Dayco 2,400 stall converter and an 8 3/4 with 3.91's the slicks were 8"x 26"x 14". Suspension consisted of 6yl. bars and comp. eng. adj. shocks in the front and 002/003 superstock springs with Mopar perf. 50/50 xtra long shock in the rear. The car was a 70 Valiant 4 door it weighed 3,320 with me in it. With an electric water pump drive, 5/16" fuel line with holley mech. fuel pump and a homemade fresh air intake (dryer hose and a dual snorkle air cleaner)the best run was 11.96/113 but it typically went 0's and teen's in decent air at Atco and E-Town. Typical 60'was low 1.70's. With a looser converter maybe around 3,500 stall it probably would have gone 11.70's or 80's.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 03:35 PM

I went high 11s w/ a VERY mild 440 combo.

3700# '70 cuda w/ SS springs, 3.91 gear, and 26x10 slicks. Full interior, full 3" exhaust w/ tailpipes and factory cuda tips.

'71 440 HP shortblock, bored .040" over. Ross flattop pistons (close to 10:1 compression). Factory forged crank and the original 6 pack rods. Stock oiling system w/ factory pan.
906 heads...nothing but a 3 angle valve job. Even reused the factory valves...NO porting.
509/292 MP purpleshaft cam, stock rockers and pushrods.
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, 830 holley double pumper.
1 7/8" headers, 3" exhaust w/ 2 chamber flowmasters.
727 w/ a TCI 10" Streetfighter 3500 stall.

This combo ran on pump gas and went 11.80s at 112 mph, 7.50s in the 1/8, 1.67-1.69 sixty foots. Not to mention I put a LOT of street miles on it.

This motor is currently in my dad's '69 road runner only now it has a six pack setup on it, a 4 speed, and 3.55 gears. Hella fun to drive!

2 cheep bulletproof combos: 1)
'71 Demon 3100# 3.91 gears, 904 trans, 3000 stall.
360+.030" KB107 pistons, stock crank and rods.
J-heads, 2.02x1.60 valves, Crane springs& retainers. ZERO port work.
MP .528" solid cam kit, 273 pushrods&rockers.
TorkerII, later Perf RPM Air Gap intake, 750 AED DP. 6400rpm shift point.
1 5/8" Hedman Hedders, 2.5" exhaust w/FlowTec Afterburner mufflers. 12.50s@109mph in the heat. 17" vacuum at idle, drive anywhere, loved it!
2)
'67 Coronet 3600# 3.91 gears, 727 trans, 2300 stall (stock 318/727 hi-stall from a D-250).
Junkyard '71 Imperial 440, freshened but standard.
Stock 906 heads, Crane springs&retainers. ZERO port work.
Used MP .474" Hemi grind cam kit, stock rockers and pushrods.
Performer RPM intake, 750 Eddy carb. Hedman 1 3/4 Hedders, 2.5" exhaust with Flowmaster 40s. 12.50s @110+mph in the heat. Good manners, sounded mean and rock solid performance for the dollar. 5400rpm shift point, live forever!!!

This is a great topic,I am putting together a 68 440 for my 65 Coronet,my plans are for,
68 440 block that has already been bored .40
used MP 509 cam
cast flat top pistons
fresh stock 906 heads with good springs
Melling pump and a windage tray
10" street fighter
SS springs and 391's

Any advice on a carb, intake and ignition setup would be greatly appreciated.

you better have cut your heads or your block. Most cast pistons are way down in the hole and that 509 hates low compresson. Try a different cam.

Not here. Paid $600 for my 340 engine, tore it down, replaced the rings and bearings and put it back together. Still has the factory rods with good bolts, and the original X heads. Added a Comp XE274 hydraulic cam, an Airgap intake, a 650 Holley, PTC 3,500 converter, SS springs, 3.91 gears. Ran 12.91 @ 103 mph with less than $2,000 invested in the engine. Car is heavy for an A-body too.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 06:01 PM

mine weighs 3430 I have a 1978 std bore 360 that I put kb flattops in and R&R'd the stock heads - 1.88 intake valves and all.

even with a 200 dollar mopar 2500 converter I was 12.80 @ 108 with the 3.23 gears out back and a 26" tall slick

went to a dynamic converter, 24.5" tall slick and it goes 12.56@ 106

aside from the KB pistons it's a stock rebuild, and a mopar 474 lift cam

If i can go 12.50's with 3.23's and a stocker 360 you should be in the 11's with a big block...

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/16/10 06:15 PM

The 72 runs high 12's with a 360.

Motor started out as a MP crate engine then had OOTB eddy heads an a vodoo cam installed.

Trans is a stock 727 with a TCI VB and 11" conv. Running 3.91 gears and it weighs around 3400#'s

Could probably sneak a little more out of it if we were to go with something like the 10" Street fighter conv.

Hey Guys!

It took me a lot more money and parts to get into the 12s than most on here, but I will share anyway.

69 Super Bee 3950lbs (with me and a passenger on my best run)
383 - 11:1
3.91
3500 converter
232/242 solid cam
RPM intake + 750DP
Edelbrock Heads
1 7/8 headers

Ran 12.7 @ 109 on 28" ET Streets the only time I've been to the track with this combo.

Same combo minus the Edelbrock heads went 13.40s

Funny you said that, as I was going to add that the results were after tuning, adjusting and changing stuff for a few years and probably 150+ passes at test and tune.

I have helped others and enjoy that as much as anything.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/19/10 02:21 AM

Well, I've apparently got way to much into my motor to be as slow as it is, but here's my entire combo that has gone 12.39 @ 110.

1967 Plymouth Satellite, Full interior, 3770 lbs with me in it.
400 block, .040 over
Forged 413 RB crank, (452 cubes)
Scat H-beam Rods
KB Icon forged pistons - 10.25:1
Mahle plasma-moly rings
(bobweight: 2314)
MP windage tray
OTB Stealth heads with 10* locks & retainers, & Engle double valve springs (350 lb. open)
Engle KV-3 solid flat tappet cam: square 252* @.050; .573 lift; 109* cl, installed straight up.
Performer RPM intake
Holley 830 cfm DP jetted 78f 84r
MSD Digital 6+ ignition w/ Mallory Mag-breakerless distributor - 36* total in at 3k.
Hooker Comp 1-7/8" headers to 3" dumps, down to 2-1/4" full exhaust with Flowmaster 40's
ACC 10" 3500 rpm converter
727 with Transgo Stage 2 kit
8-3/4" w/ 3.91:1 gears; sure grip.
Stock suspension with SSM lift bars, and Summit adjustable shocks
CE bolt in Frame connectors, welded in.
Hand-me-down 28x9x14 slicks mounted on 14x6 rims.

I've made 10 passes and haven't really done anything except mess with the jetting a little. I love the car, and am proud of the motor I built for right at 5-grand total. I am plenty confident that there's more in it, But I'm frustrated with what I see here..... i.e.: a lot of guys going WAY faster than me, with way less motor. I think that a set of better tires on the right rims will help a little, as its pretty skatey on the current slicks.

I think my combo SHOULD be somewhere near the 11.70's. I figure I'll have to make about 114mph to get there though.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/19/10 05:23 AM

Running 12's with a big block, especially a 440 doesn't take too much work.

My very first 440 car was a 1968 Coronet R/T. I took the stock 440, rebuilt it and only added a MP 484 lift cam, aftermarket intake, holley carb, and headers. With the stock 3.23 gears, I was running 13.3-13.4 & 103-104 mph in a full weight car.

Wanting to get into the 12s, I had the heads bowl blended (mild port job) and added 2.14 / 1.81 valves and changed the camshaft to something a tad bigger, I think it was the MP .509 lift cam. Same intake, carb, and exhaust. I did add 3.91 gears. Next run out, 12.49 @ 108 mph.

Finally, I dropped on some Edelbrock Heads, a Solid Tappet cam from Hughes and crane roller rockers. I also removed the stock steel hood, and added a year one fiberglass six pack hood to save some weight and look aggressive. I moved the battery to the trunk as well. I ran a 11.9 @ 114.5 mph the next time out. 60 ft times were 1.75.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/19/10 07:32 AM

My old 383 Dart. This was my Dart before my son bought it and I had a mild 383 in it. It was a stock 1970 shortblock that I cut the 452 heads and decked the block to get a true 9.5 comp. It was stock pistons in the stock bore. I used the MP .484 cam and stock valvetrain including stock rockers. Had Comp single springs on the 452 heads and we did some mild pocket porting on the heads. I had the Performer RPM intake and a 750 DP. CPPA 2" headers and we used a stock dist I recurved. It had a Turbo Action 10" tight 3000 converter and a RMVB. Had an 8-3/4 with 3.91's and used McCreary G/60-15's which hooked good on that car. It weighed just over 3500 with me in it and ran a best of 12.31 @ 110. I was very pleased how well that car ran with that so mild 383. It now belongs to my son and has a .030 over 400 (406) in it and has run 11.40's. Ya cant tell me 383's dont run good. Ron

Quote:

You and I almost have the same set up. This is what I have and my best is an 11.80 @ 113(and change), 1.62 60', .452 r/t.

I got a 67 Coronet, all steel, full interior. 400 stroked to 470, 10.8:1, Diamond pistons, Manley Rods, 727 trans with a 2800 PTC, 4.10 dana spool, Eddy RPM heads OOTB, RPM intake, 830 Quik Fuel carb, Voodoo cam 60304, MSD, 325x50x15's M/T drag radials, TTI 1 7/8" primaries, 3" to rear bumper, summit 90/10's front, stock shocks rear, frame connectors welded in.

You should easily be in the verrrrry low 12's to high 11's with your car before tuning it. I didn't do much to get out of a 12.10 @ 110ish to my new best - basically put on better tires, shocks, and had my trans rebuilt (it definitely had seen it's day) and that was it. I was doing backflips for hours after hitting my first 11 second 1/4. And then the fun began...

The only thing I could think of would be the tires - you said hand me downs... I improved quite a bit with more footprint from a 275 to the 325s I have now... but that also meant I mini tubbed and moved the springs in. How are your 60' times? Spinning? Traction issues? Take photos or a video of your launches to see how your car reacts? I'll be the first to admit, I am always learning AND, what I have learned, I am willing to shed some insight as well. That's what makes Moparts so awesome.

Best of luck to you and your project!!

Dave

4.10's
SS springs
M/T 29.5 X 10.5 slicks
factory 360 "high stall" converter with the weight knocked off
1 3/4" headers
re-ringed 1968 440 short block, std bore, OE pistons
346 heads, valve job, new guides, OE valves, NO porting of any kind, milled .010, steel shim gasket
std Performer, 3310 carb
Crower 271HDP cam
stock rockers, non-adjustable pushrods, single springs, stock retainers

went 12.30's-40's like clock work, 109-110.
shift at 52-5300, through the lights around 5500.

swapped to an old Torker intake, blocked the heat x-over, 1" open spacer, swapped out stock lower pulley for Moroso under drive pulley, cut oil pump spring to lower WOT oil pressure from 85 down to like 55-60.
went a best of 12.12 @ 112 like that.

oh, and i pretty much always ran it with open headers.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/24/10 05:16 AM

Want to hear cheap. I built a 71 440 from a Chrysler 300 that had out of round cylinders, one in particular was .017 out. The owner was cheap and didn't want to bore it. I tanked the block, put in new cam bushings, cleaned up the crank, rods and pistons, put everything back as is with new rings, bearings etc., put in a used 484 cam I had sitting around from a previous engine, had the heads milled .040 to bring compression up from the factory 9 to 1., installed a used eddy performer with a 750 holley. rebuilt 727 with a 3000 converter and 3.91 gears in his 71 Charger which has a worn out suspension. The engine is now 10 years old and has excessive wear on # 2 cyl and the engine smokes on that bank but he is happy with it and it is still going. He drives it 40 miles to the track and back home and it runs consistent 12.70s at 106 mph. This is on an engine 10 yrs old with 70 percent leakdown on # 2 cyl. Imagine what it could run rebored with fresh heads and balanced. This is proof it doesn't take much to get a mopar running.

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/28/10 01:58 AM

'66 Belvedere
3,920 race weight
Stock stroke 440, 10.9 to 1
Stock 915 heads with Crane 1.5 rockers
1 3/4" headers
.550ish lift solid with about 252*@.050 camshaft
Torker intake, 750 Holley
727 had a reverse pattern manual valve body and deep pan
Dynamic 9.5" converter that would flash 5,500 (I'd shift @ 6,400)
3.54 Dana 60, 28X9 slicks

Went a best of 11.65 @ 115 with exhaust dumps open..........Usually ran 11.90's-12.0's @ 112 through the mufflers.......pulling both front tires off the ground about 2".......

Re: 12 Second combos & what it took to get it? - 11/28/10 02:48 AM

My old combo went 11.78 @ 114 in good air. It would run 12.00-12.20 in the hot humid summer air all day long. It was consistent as heck too.

- 69 440 .030 over
- stock rods
- flat top pistons 10.00:1
- MP 484 cam
- stock, stamped rockers, shafts, and push rods.
- hooker 1 7/8 super comps with full exhausts and tail pipes.
- E heads
- six pack (thats a budget buster but a good used single plane intake with a Holley 850 would do the job for a lot less)
- 3.91s in an 8 3/4
- stock leaf springs and a mopar pinion snubber.
- 10" slicks
- regular old cheapie street shocks
- 727 with 3200 10" converter
- heavy cragar SS wheels.
- car weighed about 3900# with me in it.
- Edelrbock HP mechanical fuel pump.

I drove it all the time on the street. I would drive it on Sunday mornings 60 miles each way to a car show. As long as I didn't get into it, it actually got decent mileage! My current combination is much more radical.
