440 "six pak" vs 440 "830 cfm annular" in bracket trim - 10/17/10 08:25 PM

hi moparts!

the car
-- 3100 lb a body with 440
11 to 1
auto
600 + cam lift solid
runs high tens 1/4 now, but planning a aluminum head swap (victors or at least the rpm edelbrocks)

which carburetor system would be the "best" overall. factoring in things like
1. all out performance
2. reliability
3. any constant "tuning" issues other than adjusting for air quality whatever

basically the worked over 830 annular discharge on the rpm intake works great with the "average at best 906 head" , its consistent and never does anything "wrong"--yay!

ive always wanted a 3 x 2's cause its neat and i hear the cfm is like 1100 WOT.
assuming things like manifold flow numbers are similar (six pak vs victor single 4) which induction system would make the better bracket setup on a high 9's low 10's 1/4 miler?

thanks!

The 830 is small so in that case I would say the 6 pac
but I hate running multiple carbs... I would go with
a 1050 dom... JMO

--thanks for the input., . the victor manifold for either of the victor heads are set up for that 1050 i see . if single 1050 is the way to go i prob wouldnt get the max wedge ports == and i cant see much diff on flow numbers between the regular victors and the max wedge victors.
who knows why one head style would be better than the other. i dont know what 10 cc more runner volume has to do with the equation.
a friend had the 830 on a bench and he said it had been "reworked" and flowed more like 900. bought it off ebay.

thanks again

Mr P. Body is right about the 830 on your combo.
The six pack flows about 950-970cfm at best (measured as a large cap 4bbl), which is great but
not optimal for you combo. The 1050cfm carb would
put you there. The 830 would
not be bad, but you may not pull the numbers you want with that carb.

Make up all the numbers that you want. The venturis, throttle bores and boosters of the outer carbs are the same size as an 850 and the center is the same size as the front half of a 590(only with better boosters). Do the math. 850 + 295 = 1145cfm. The old Direct Connection books refered to them as 425 cfm outers and 295 middle carbs. I guess they must have used the same logic.

I think a 950Dp would work fine, but a six-pack is very cool, and when the outboards open, it's nothing like the 2ndaries on a 4bbl.

I have dyno tested several stock type six pak set ups and a bunch of different single four barrel intakes and carbs, 600 to 1050 CFM Dominator. All of the Mopar V8 I have tested and raced have made more power and torque with more CFM than smaller CFM My low deck street stroker motor had a six pak set up on it until I swapped the heads to a set of Indy 440-1 with a Indy 400-3 intake. That six pak set up works great at the track and on the street As far as the CFM on the stock six pak carbs. the factory rates them at 350 CFM on the 440 center carbs. and 500 CFM on the outboard for a total of 1350 CFM

yes but two barrels are flowed at a different depression(sp) so they flow less

Yep, 350 and 500 are the way Holley rated them using the irrelevant 2 barrel formula. As I said earlier D.C. listed them as 295 and 425 which lines up perfect with the venturi and throttle bore diameters of similar 4 barrel carbs.

Six packs are cool and work great, but I wouldn't want one on something I was going to be racing every weekend. Much easier to work on a single 4.

i have it down to a science and i have actually caught myself bitchin bout trying to change jets on the secondarys on a 4bbl

an fuel lines on a sixpack makes life much simpler

Ray, you're the exception, lol. No doubt they work good when setup correctly. Your car flies and your advice was priceless when I was dialing in Dad's six pack.

I got totally fed up with that metal fuel line the last time I tuned a 6 pack. Taking that stupid line off and putting it back on over and over got old in a hurry.

I'm never touching one again unless it has some kind of flex hose on it....

For what it's worth the 6 pack carbs on my 493 stroker were prepped by Dale Cubic and when he flowed them he told me they flowed 1037 cfm and 1074 cfm at the 2 different levels he used (whatever that meant - not an expert on this stuff).
