Ever since I started drag racing (15+ years) I've been a big smokey burnout type guy. The reason for this is I was told all them years ago, that a heavy car (3800lb+) and a narrow tyre (10.5) needed it. However I'm getting about 30 passes at most off a set of slicks (MT 3062) and they've gone! I talk to guys in the pits and they are changing after 2 or 3 seasons! but they have a lighter, less powerful car and a bigger tyre.
Has compound technology moved so far that cars like mine don't need the big burnout any more?
Whats your opinions?

No big burn outs for me... I start in high gear and
get them spinning and let go of the line lock and burn
forward till it starts biting... that usually puts
the tire about 25* hotter and that is the number I
was told you want to be(25* hotter than the track
unless the track is real hot... above 125*)... if
the track is hot then I do a smaller burn out...
and yes there have been 2 things that have really
changed over the years... tire technology and shock
technology

Not only are you wearing your tires out you could be actually hurting your traction. M/T tires are designed to work with little to no burnout on a warm track or a slight to moderate burnout on a dead cold track. We have gone 6.64/225 on our 10.5 W's with only a small(maybe 2 seconds) burnout. At 2950 pounds our car is no lightweight either.

I found out in a most peculiar way. The track we were at wasnt putting down much water and my son pulled up too far......VERY abbreviated burnout!! But much to my surprise the car short-timed better then it ever had!


We run the MT 10.50X28.5 (cant remember the number) We experimented with longer burnouts and just hazing the tires and rolling forward. The best 60 ft was with the short burnout 143 versus the long sustained burnout 148 The tires definantly hook better on a hot track with a much shorter burnout.

Burnout tips are duly noted. However, after ringing my usual M/T suppliers, I've been told that M/T will no longer supply tyres to Europe . Due to them being made from old oil, they dont comply with european rules Sounds crazy to me, I would have though that using re-cycled oil would be greener than using new
Anyway, I'm having to change manufacturer. Anyone with any experience of Toyo tires?

Just order them through summit or something similair? Over here all the tires are coming over this way... MT's GY's all kind off brands. You could see if M&H has your size, they have a depot in Belgium.

I just keep getting my GY's from overseas though.

Btw, you're running the Finals next week? If so, see you there, I'll be there from next friday. My buddy, where most of the crowd will visit I guess, will be there from wednesday with his Superbird.

Hi Hans.
M/T used to have a European distribution warehouse in the UK, sadly because of this ruling it now no longer exists and there is no "stock" in the UK. I used to be able to get them in a couple of days. I can import them myself from the US but to get them here for the weekend would cost £350+ in shipping alone
The less expensive way takes 3 weeks, too slow, I need them for the finals.
Anyway I've got some toyo's coming for friday So we'll see you there and have a beer or two
