Manifold murder - 07/26/10 03:39 AM

This belongs to a friend of mine, I guess when you have a chevy you have to resort to what ever you can do to make it faster.

I have been working on this for several days.

The spread of the runners fit? So all you did was
weld new flanges on... cool

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 03:48 AM

Yes they fit good, I also had to make the ends, the one for the distributor was fun

Nice work! I recall someone telling me about a Mopar manifold on a SBC in the Michigan area. I think Uratchko built the motor.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 10:32 AM

Thats pretty cool. I don't even want to know how much it costs to do that. But i do hope he is paying you well.

What was the reason for doing this though? I was pretty sure you could get similar intakes for a SBC.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 10:50 AM

Don't quote me please, but I believe this is a common converstion that BES do on some SBC engines aswell.
Those 420 intakes are reported to be a great design, hence why they are being re-made.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 02:28 PM

This one is a 598-ab, it's way better than anything he could buy to fit it.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 02:33 PM

Big cube the guy you heard about is butch kemp.he runs in the 10.5 tire class at milan he has a sbc with a 420 intake I believe it is 3100lbs and runs 8.40-8.50s last time I seen it.he also runs in the nmca in pro stock class.even the chevy guys have seen the light!!!!!!

Next time your playin with it take a pic down the
plenum if you would... I'd like the see the runner
dividers... thanks

Re: Manifold murder - 07/26/10 03:57 PM

This is a common conversion. Uratchco is actually building a SBC with a single 4, P7, Hemi intake on it, because I just put two foggers on it.

I'll get a shot of it tomorrow before we have it cut out for a dominator.

I have a regular 598 also, I'll try to get both of them in 1 shot to see the differance

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 04:36 AM

Funny cause back in the day when a friend of mine was running in GT/KA with his Daytona they were fitting chevy intakes on the 318 because of the lack of good Mopar intakes. Looks like it has taken a different turn since those days.

I know, at one time I had some spacers to use a Chevy Bowtie intake to a Mopar

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 12:30 PM

My old 397" W5 engine had a chevy intake that was chopped/welded on it. Ran real good with it also. Nice to see Mopar make a part the other guys want for a change.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 01:14 PM

Could a company take the manifold you've modified and cast it into a one piece intake? Sounds like there is a market for it.

Are these both the 598 castings... I have a VERY
early casting and it looks like the stock manifold
you show(well very similar)... I'm just trying to
figure out what it is
thanks

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 02:13 PM

Yes they are both 598 castings, but the one I converted to a chevy is a 598-ab. Neither of these have been ported yet.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 02:13 PM

The design engineer of the '420' told me that the 'AB' was an update of the '598'. Basically they eliminated material that was consistantly removed from the porting process. So the original '598' is not necessarily a lesser manifold than the '598AB'. As usual, nice work Laverne. I'd have to check again on the PN# but a buddy is using an angle milled Bowtie intake on his 15* SBC with good results.(850HP)Is this a 15 or 18 deg. head SBC? Can you give us any details or is this a grudge/secret build?

Thanks... looks like I have some more work to do on
my casting which I figured anyways

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 02:26 PM

Thanks

It has Brodix -12 --15* heads, the headshave a intake flange like a 23* head but the ports are raised a little higher.

The engine is a 406 ina 81 Camaro that weighs 2720, it has ran a best of 5.68 in the 1/8 mile.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/27/10 04:17 PM

Several includeing me ran an 18 degree chevie intake on Arrington head and W7 engines. Once the 420 was out it went the other way around.

We had to cut and weld flanges because the chevie would not reach the ports. The 420 can be ported and drilled to fit a chevy and then make a valley pan. What is being done in the picture makes a neater job but is a lot of work.

Great work on that intake, you do really nice work!

I saw Kent at Indy last year passing out Intakes.
All of the top running Chevy boys were getting them off him.

Re: Manifold murder - 07/29/10 02:14 AM

Nice, is he gonna go with dominator? I thought he had a 4150!
Got any other pics to share? You done the mod for oil line on my intake yet? I also remembered today the oil pan mains have to be reworked.

I think you should remove the Mopar logos and get FIFTH AVE RACECARS ball milled on the front of the valley!
