How big of a tranny cooler do you use? - 06/30/10 03:55 PM
I finally had time to start messing with the car, just driving it around on the street. After tranny warms up the trans break kicks on in first. Once the stall (ptc 9.5") revs to 1500 or more rpm it kicks off. The cooler is warm but still can touch it. Just wondering how big of a cooler people are running on car that sees street time?

i run the biggest super cooler B&M makes with a 9" J all over the place on the street. works good.

The BIGGEST cooler ? ...can COOL the ATF tooo much ...and affect the stall-speed.... big-time.

I will have to install a gauge. to confirm temp.
The pressure seems to low, once it get's a few rpm up the brake releases. This is without touching the button the brake should be off the whole time.

You're post is a little confusing but I don't think your "transbrake" is turning off and on. Do you have a transbrake on the car???
Once your trans fluid is up to temp your converter will start slipping much more - up to it's published stall speed (or close). If it's a 9.5 converter that's probably well above 1500 rpm. So if everyghing else is OK on the trans - your converter is just doing what it is supposed to do. When it's up to temp you should be able to hold the brakes hard, bring down the gas pedal to just below your stall speed (say 3000 rpm) and then let go of the breaks and floor it and hang on! When your fluid is cold the converter has much less slip and it feels much different. When my car get really warm (tranny) I have to go up my driveway at 5000 rpm!
The 9" B&M Supercooler has a built in thermostat that kicks on when the temp gets high enough and off when it drops below that. I use one and have no complaints.
Also - make sure you have the correct amount of fluid in the trans. Too much or too little can cause it to stall more than normal - we use to use this as kids as a "Mexican" stall converter.......

Don't mean to steal the post but I also have a PG and I see 240 in my gauge after a pass is this normal with a trans cooler.

There is a trans brake on the car. The convertor can stall around 3700 rpm when using the trans brake.
After driving around for awhile I pull up to stop sign, shifted into first at a slow roll and tranny locked up like I hit the brake button. I can put the car in reverse and it will back up with out hitting the brake button also. I put it back in first and it locked until the rpm hit around 1500 then freed up. The car takes off freely in second gear. Was thinking either the line pressure is to low after warming up or the cooler is not big enough.
