Early "B" guys, which oil pan for big block?

Early "B" guys, which oil pan for big block? - 06/28/10 04:46 PM

Hey all, this past spring I put a 440/4 speed in my 65 Coronet. I used a 7 quart deep oil pan with a 1/2" pickup. This is a street car and I live on county roads. This equates to the oil pan rubbing when 3 or 4 people are in the car. I now have an oil leak.

So, I get to yank it and change the pan. I have a factory 187 pan to put on, but no pickup. I cannot find a 1/2" for this pan.

What pan do you all use that does not hang down? Will the Mopar Hemi pan work? I have the stock 1965 K frame.

Thanks,

Other than the original the 187 is about the only factory pan that will fit the BB early B. You'll have to fabricate your own 1/2" pickup for it.

A Max Wedge pan would be ideal for your situation but try to find one.

That is what I was afraid of John. I thought I might be able to cut and weld my deep pan 1/2" pick up to work with the factory pan.

The 1966 to 1969 street hemi pans fit fine in the early B body with the B and RB motors mounted on stock wedge K members with stock mounts Hemi shoulbd mount in the same place due to the trans crossmembers being the same BTW, I stock the Mopar OEM 1/2 oil pick ups for both the early and late B&E body Street Hemi motors with the stock oil pans. The late model 1970-71 street hemi and 440 6 pak pans won't fit in the pre 1966 B body K members with stock mounts

Be careful, the 66-69 K frame is diff than the early K frames. You see the K member is diff moving the engine forward 1 1/2-2" compared to the later 66 up K-frames.
If it were my car, I would clearance the are needed with a carbide Burr and epoxy, or Mig weld up hole. Im pretty sure stock-ish style oil pans will fit with a clearanced K-member in the lip area.
Look at Mancini Racing web site for pans and pics.
I run the SS style pan with the drag link through the pan. My engine was/is at stock location. I located a Milodon pan that worked like a charm.
If you have a truck pan, or 4x4 pan like the Milodon pan I would just use it.

I think he's looking for a better clearance stock type pan to replace his deep sump one...

Not sure that would help much.

I use a Moroso pan that fits right in the stock K-frame with no mods at all. I forget if it is listed as a 7 or 8 qt pan but when I put 7 in it thats right below the full line. My 63 is a street car that I drive alot and has never even hit once. You can see it has about 6" of room. I like it alot as I use the 1/2" pickup and as I said it needs no mods at all. Ron

I run that pan and I don't have any issues. You do have to clearance the k-member a little though.

if you were thinking of cutting and modifying just do it on the pan you have. i made a pan for my 65 thats 5 1/2" deep, holds 7qts. cut the bottom off what you have and make a sump that sticks out both sides like a track pan.

Ron I run the 66 up Moroso 8 qt in my 65 also.Fit perfect.I just took a tiny piece out of the right K because it cleared but was close.I could have gotten by but liked the extra 1/4 I gained. My pan has been on for 12 years street and never came close to hitting even on Ohios bad roads.I used to run a 67 pan when I first had the 440 in.Ran that for over 25 years.Rocky

Bigjohn65, are you running the 6 Quart hemi pan? My k frame is already notched on the passenger side for pan clearance. How does it fit at the front. Any clearance issues?

Thanks

Hi moparts,

Will the 6 quart 70/71 hemi pan fit in my 69 charger as the 402 pan is only 5 quarts ?

Many thanx from jon

The new style Moroso pan is the only pan I have found that fits with no cutting - its sits higher than most pans and has the right clearance on the drag link - this is on a 65 coronet 440 - 4-speed - you can also get a 1/2" pick-up for it
