who pushes and who pulls auto. shifters. - 06/14/10 07:45 PM

i'm thinkin' about changing to pushing instead of pulling my trans. shift lever.
goin' from a turbo action pulling shifter to a PPP pushing forward shifter.
is pushing better than pulling. also looks like i'll be going transbrake style.
what's your poison? push or pull?

Exactly........hard to push foreward when you`re being slammed backwards.

Pull back 2nd to 3rd for the burnout. Then the air cylinder takes over during the run.

I run 'glides in my race cars, and they both get pushed by a solenoid.

Puller, was a pusher.

I wrote PULL on a piece of tape and stuck it on my dash...Kinda like my Motocross days when I ran two classes, one on a bike that braked on the left, shifted on the right, one braked on the right and shifted on the left...Or was it the other way around....?

Pusher

I took my TurboAction shifter and changed it from a cable out the front to a cable out the back .

I like the TA shifter because I can get any length cable from a local boat shop.

yo dooster, with a pusher,i think it would be harder to push than pull, especially when you get slammed back in the seat, also those are transbrake VB's. push button to go in reverse.

My TA transbrake (non low band apply) doesnt require
a button... just put it in reverse like normal... this
is a reverse pattern VB and shifter

Mr.P forgot to mention, i want the free nuetral shifter after 3rd going through the stripe.
so i'm wondering if pushing might be the better way to go.
ppp sells either style.
just wondering if after all these years, gpoing from pulling to pushing might mess me up.

I like to pull for 2 reasons 1 the g-force deal 2 I like to pull the shifter away from N but seeing you are going for a clean N VB you will be going towards N regardless

This will reduce the number of companies that you
will have(with the clean neutral)... myself I prefer
to pull and I think it will be easier to find with
what you want

Re: who pushes and who pulls auto. shifters. - 06/15/10 01:52 AM

We use the PPP Shifter in the push mode. 1-2-3-Clean neutral...All going forward. I personally like it better. Its all what you like. One of my friends has a PPP shifter that is a puller and I didnt like that because of how I had to pull the trigger lever. The forward pattern is a simple slap slap. To go into clean neutral, the pull trigger needs to be pulled on.

Puller all the way. I have driven my buddies Duster with the pusher and I just dont like it. It is just much easier to pull the shifter when the car is pushing you back in the seat. The only time I like pushing is in a push button tranny. Ron

looks like i'm sticking with the puller. ppp shifter clicks right into 2nd and 3rd. only need the lever after free nuetral to go into park.
just got my griner valvebody and red ppp puller shifter with free nuetral. sweet
i love stimulating the economy.

Hurst "Quarter-Sticks", if I remember right. From the late 80's-early 90's, made to resemble a Pro Stock Lenco setup...

You are... CORRECT!

My memory failed me! I used to have these in a car back in the 80's, and yes, they are "Lightning Rods", not "Quartersticks"! 'Mybad!

Something wrong here. you do not have to pull no trigger to shift. easy to shift.

Its been a few years, but my friend that purchased the PPP shifter that is set up as a puller, didnt operate the same as when it was a pusher. I vaguely remember that it pulled into second without pulling the trigger lever, but then to go from 2nd to 3rd, the trigger lever needed to be pulled. I could be wrong because I didnt drive the car. The push set up seemed much more simple, especially with the clean neutral.
I just checked with PPP and VernMotor is right, the trigger lever does not need to be pulled in order to go from 2nd to 3rd when its a puller. Its a matter of preferance really, I am just more comfortable with the push shift. I rest my palm on top of the shifter and shift with my thumb pushing. I dont have to grap the shifter to pull. Just my opinion. Im not saying one is better than the other.

with the PPP, pushing just seems so much easier ...slap, slap, just like mentioned previously.....would seem awkward to "hit" it back with the trigger lever in the way...there is a video online of a PPP shifter in action....google it, it's under Century Performance...
