How long to build your race car? - 06/06/10 06:16 PM

My challenger has been apart for 3 years now. Not even close to being finished. I wanted to have this car done before I hit 30 and its not going to happen. Just had a kid, working two jobs and building/restoring two vehicles. The challenger is back halved and sub frame is tacked in place. I think I have at least another 2 or 3 years before its on the road again

this experience is not from my car but from a very good friends build, he bought a drivable streetcar with cage and big wheelwhells already done it took 3 months to cut out the inner fenders in the front and replace them with tubes,installing a much meaner motor, do the whole electrical system, rebuild the rear, and basicly go thru the whole car and change alot of earlier owners screwups.. this was 3months for 2people using up basicly every minute of free time after work in a shop with alot of usefull tools and an average of about 5 hours of sleep everynight, car was finnished 4 in the morning the same day that it was transported to the track the first time, it takes alot more time than anyone could ever gues..

After mine came home from the chassis shop it took 6 months for me to get it done.

forever, they're never done....even when they're running they're not done. i swear some of these guys can build an aircraft carrier in two weeks...me it takes a bloody month to mount a seat

18 months to convert my car from a streeter to being on the track. major advantage was i'd kicked my women out since i was sick of her crap so i lived alone. this meant i could work on her when i wanted & spend as much $$ as i liked. joined an internet dating site so i didn't have to pay for hookers helped the budget a lot!

The first time it took me 10 months that was building
the chassis, engine trans and cutting down the rear end
2nd time was 3 months... built a new chassis and engine

I got all y'all beat. Heck, you could add all yours together and I still beat you. I purchased the barracuda February 1987 (thats 23 YEARS) and it is just now getting built. Patience and the love of a good woman, anything can happen.

I agree with jamesc they never get done(it seems). I had to sell my challenger before it was "done" I had it for 10 years. The cool thing about it is, i sold it to member TonyS451 and he has finnished it! So i will still be able to look at it from time to time.
My 67 cuda drag car is still under construction, its been 3.5 years since we started it. Its almost there..maybe another 2 or 3 months to go. My only advice is never try to do two cars at the same time.

It's never done, I have had my car fo 27 years now and had it apart 4 times to change eng/trans trying to go faster each time...Matt

27 months, Started with gutted former race car. Removed 70's style roll bar, replaced rear quarters, Installed cage,tubs,Lexan windows, painted inside and out. Added fuel and electric. Built engine, fender and bumper mounts.
Attached engine, trans and rear. Waved the magic wand and TA-DA

Still not finished

but at least raceable

I've done almost every thing myself. Fromm rust repair,cage,suspension,etc. My friend is now straightening and painting the body. I'm in year 4.

i picked up my 65 in October 0f "08"..Finding the money to build the whole car inside and out was harder than finding the time thats for sure.

been in progress for about
5 years
now this is the 2 paint job in a YEAR
and lost 4 grand over it

strated as just going to be a 'street car'
now full blown race car
just got floors installed firewall,
almost ready for interior,
plumming, electrical
so still alot more to go
hoping to be done by monster mopar this year

Three years for me so far... My plan was to be done before I hit 50. I have another 2 years to go and I should actually be done some time this year!

It took me 23 months. But I worked on the car at least 15 minutes,EVERY DAY except maybe 5 days. No Wife and plenty of Money to finish it.

I guess I feel a little better now. My challenger was my first car and was never down for more than a week. I'm getting used to not seeing it in my garage anymore. Once I get it back going to start building the turbo setup/ body paint. Need to find a hemi block and heads for mockup

I've owned the car for 6 years. Build started 2 1/2 years ago. Hope to have it running this summer. Unlimited funds would have speeded up the process. '65 coronet, 528 hemi.

Bought mine in 07 as a roller from another member on here. Was not in a hurry & wanted to make sure everything went correct and wanted to have the $ to do it correct. My engine was finished and dynoed 06/09 and I finally just fired it up the car in my garage this week end. I still have a few things to do to get it to the track though. 1 more good weekend should have it there - just in time for the AZ heat (it was 110 out on Sunday when I finally had everything ready to fire it).

I'm in the same boat. I had REALLY hoped to be done before the heat kicked in. Just wasn't in the cards:(

I'll keep you posted.

I have been at it since January.......started with a clean running '65 factory air G.T. car.
Not original motor or trans , or I would have been more hesitant to cut it up , but too late now.

I am hoping to get some laps in this summer.
It will be close.
But I was planning on having it done by now and then reality snuck in and clubbed me back to my senses.
