All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/04/10 04:39 AM

I have finally finished my wife's engine, Broken in the cam, checked it over. all ready for the oldie but goody drags this weekend and I check her belts, bummer expired.I got to looking and the mfg tag said they were made in 2006??? but the sfi tag was punched May 2008??? I ordered a set Monday the 31st. same brand and style. I received the new set today. I looked, they were mfg ed in 2010. The sfi tag had june 2010 punched. Made in Michigan, sent to Sparks Nevada and then to me in 3 days !!! Do you suppose the part house punches them when they sold them? And they are only good for two years, ya right! Sorry but that's too funny!

How fast is your wifes car? I was listening to a racer buddy & a NHRA tech inspector discussing seat belts certification tags awhile back & something the NHRA guy mentioned was if theres an out of date tag he has to fail the belts but if the car doesn't go fast enough to require a certified set of belts (10.0 & quicker I believe) & there is no tag... It gets a pass...

Lee Shepard died in 198? from the belts letting him slide outside the car(Pro stock Camero, reigning world champ at that time) when it went over on its side down in Oklahoma while testing on thier(Rehr and Morrison pro stock) way to the Gatornationals that year NHRA instituted the two year belt rule right after that there was(and still is) a lot of controversy over that accident and what actually caused what and what actually happened I really wish that it had not happened, Lee Shepard was a real drag racer and it is to bad that there was no ambulance or any other medical help available that day at that track. I don't know if that would have helped but that is over and done with. Now there is no testing or any runs made at any track I know of that does not have a ambulance on the property while racing or testing is going on

My understanding of the accident: they were testing/tuning 60' times and had not been making full passes. I was told Lee had not been fastening his belts as they were stopping right after the 60' mark and backing up, adjusting and trying again most of the day. On the last test, they figured Lee decided to take it clear through and then the mishap occured. Possibly no belts on at that time.

I agree it's a scam. US Military fighter jets use the same belts from start to finish and SFI doesn't have a thing to do with it

when the belts are manufactured they date them 3 months into the future to allow time to get to the customer. I once lucked out in may and got Aug date so I got 3 seasons. This year in May got April

with the BS roundy rounders use them till they are gone. They surely need better belts than drag racers !

Re: All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/04/10 12:59 PM

I got my belts recertified last year and they came back with a big stamp on the tag that said “Last Reweb”….What the crap!! Apparently they weren’t making enough money having them recertified every 2 years, so now I’m going to have to buy new belts next time…

Re: All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/04/10 05:57 PM

The only problem with the tec guy ok'ing your car with out dated belts if you say it's slow is that so many cars now go allot faster than they look. If some thing happens who's on the hook , not the guy that lied about how fast his car was.

I agree its BS....

I tried to get around some of it by getting the Platinum harness which is good for 4 years (you send it in after 2 years and they reweb it for free one time).

Re: All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/04/10 07:01 PM

i've seen cars with things falling off, and the first (and sometimes only) thing they check is the &%^$&^%$* belts. lame. i could see MAYBE the pro ranks having two year recert, but that's a whole other animal. my garage is replete with expired good-as- new belts. lame. i suspect the date gets punched upon sale. mine are always punched for the coming month or there abouts.

Re: All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/04/10 09:19 PM

I have sold over 20 used sets(mine and fellow racers) to the local roundy round guys for $20.00 a set. It is a NASCAR sanctioned track and they don't seem to have a problem with them.

My old belts were fine,,,like new....

I replaced them,,,,but what a waste....

I did find a use for my old belts....LOL

Yes, if the car does not require a roll bar then the 2 year experation does not apply.

I'm all for being safe! Dont get this wrong. I just think its funny that the set we bought in 2008 were made in 2006. But the sfi tag was punched in may of 2008???!!! So they set on someones shelf for two years before sale ???

Re: All ready.... Expired belts!!!! - 06/05/10 12:04 AM

"EXPIRED" belts is the biggest line of BS and the clearest case of PAYOLA that I can think of.

I say ... (and probably MOST HERE would agree) ... JUDGE these belts on the condition of the webbing and the stitching.

I have the ORIGINAL OEM belts in my 62 Plymouth ...and they are fine.

THIS is what I heard also .... from either Don Campanello or Frank Iaconio.

The previous year I was a sponsor on the RMS car.

A few years ago NHRA was asking for suggestions. I wrote them that if they wanted to do one easy thing that would give them a HUGE PR benefit they could review the 2 year seat belt rule. I never got a reply.

If you do not run 11.49 or qicker you do not need dated belts. I have dialed 11.5 and stayed below for a season just because I didn't feel like buying a set of belts. Never was questioned about it. They would rather see you run with expired belts that worn out OEM belts that would also be legal.

Same basic combo as the last one, but a little more camshaft, Thanks Dewayne! Old combo would run 11.0's. So, we have to have them. But I guess I can use them in my truck I'm putting together. I dont think it'll hit a .49 Yet!
