aluminum driveshaft - 05/29/10 02:26 PM

My buddie was out in the salvage yard looking for a big yoke input shaft for a 727. He found a 1999 2500 series van with a alum. driveshaft and it had the big yokes. We test fit the input shaft and that worked and the universals work. Will this driveshaft hold up in a mid 10 secound 3300 pound drag car?

Gary, do you know that for sure? Victor what is the application you're using it in? i will be needing a shaft and it would be nice to get one from a bone yard as opposed to having a new one made.

I have Aluminum Drive shaft in my car. 3100Lb Super Street car. 512 cubic inch motor that makes 800 hp and over 700 tq. I bought the tube at the salvage yard and had it shortened to the correct length. Mine is out of a Chev 1/2 Ton. The car has gone 9.50 at altitude with no issues.

James its a 1977 Aspen that makes 550 to 600 horse and weighs 3300 pounds.I think this is the way to go.The weight differance is alot. May need a bigger diameter driveshaft loop.He scored his fo 50 bucks.More that the salvage yard would of got from scrap.

The drivehsaft in my car is a alum one from the boneyard out of a Crown vic police car. It has the 1350 big u joint ends on it and i had a driveshaft shop cut it down and balance it for 80.00 and he said that it should easily hold 1000 hp.. It has worked great for me and i have 180. total investment in it!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: aluminum driveshaft - 06/07/10 07:49 PM

I got one of the Spicer aluminum driveshafts from Muscle Motorsports. Appears to be a quailty piece. I believe they are 3.5" shafts. Even got it at the correct length that I needed.

FYI, upgrading to 1350 yokes may add some additional $$ to the overall cost if you go this route.

Re: aluminum driveshaft - 06/08/10 02:51 PM

I just got my shaft today from driveline specialties in duluth mn new 3 1/2" shaft, mild steel, spicer forged slip yoke, 1350 solid spicer joints complete balanced ready to install to my door $310 Ordered it friday and got it today. That sure seems like a cheap way to get into a aluminum shaft. Has anyone noticed any E.T. difference?
