540" short block

540" short block - 05/08/10 12:21 AM

I decided to have Muscle Motors build me a new 540" short block. I recently bought a new hemi ram truck and sold my daily driver. the money from the car I sold is to be used for motor upgrades. I am going to sell my 496" short block. I plan on useing as much of the top end as possible. the EZs are fully ported an will get a bigger valve to help with flow. I know these heads will not get me the most power but it fits in the budget right now. I hope to get 800 or so hp with this combination. this will be a high compression motor with a big roller cam. this is all going into a new World aluminum block. the Roadrunner should weigh around 3400lbs with me in it with the new block. I hope to be running mid 9s with this combo. I need to go to a 4.56 gear from the 4.10 and either loosen my existing converter or maybe have to go to an 8" converter. I presently have a Dynamic 9.5' 4200 stall. I will keep you informed as things progress.

Sounds awesome Tom! An 8" may be too loose for the nitrous if you're still gonna run it.

EZ heads will make 800 hp on a good short block without too much trouble. Just need a good rocker arm package so you can run a good roller cam.

Thanks Andy. I have Harland sharp rockers. they are only 1.5 I think they should be ok.
Good book Andy. I bought it a few months ago. Great info.

I don't understand why you would take the 4.10 gear out. What size slicks are you running?
I would think 9.0 and 150 mph could be close with the right head porting. I don't even have a roller cam in my 511.

Re: 540" short block - 05/08/10 03:15 AM

Jim I was running a 315/60 drag radial approx. 30" tall. I recently switched to 31x16.5 QTP that are 31" tall and will have some growth. I should trap at 7300 rpms in the 1/4. my 496" set up was a street/strip combo; pump gas and I used nitrous at the track so the 4.10 worked well. Now I am going to run all motor with a taller tire and the 4.56 seems to be best for wringing everything out of this combo.

I follow what the others say, you might want to try the converter and gears you have. The motor might like to shift at 6700 with a big rollercam, 280+ intake duration at .050, and may be OK with your converter, or maybe loosen it up some.

Re: 540" short block - 05/08/10 03:38 AM

Thanks Greg. I also see what others are saying. I haven't bought any gears. I figured I would wait for the dyno sheet to see what changes to the converter need to be done if any. Mike at MM said with my EZ heads I will probably have to turn some RPM in order to make the power I hope to make.

Hi Ron, I sure plan on being there with it. New tubs and body work are done, now I just need the motor and am ready to go. this time the car will be 250lbs less and 100+ hp more than the last time we were all there in Sept. a few yrs ago.

Hey Doug, maybe I will have enough power to do that kind of a wheele stand on motor alone this time?

Tom,Best of Luck with it! Yeah..540 sounds like a nice even number! Definately keep us posted on your build! Here's to your being able to "hang the hoops" without the nitrous! BTW...I've got an xtra rear bumper layin' around if ya need it in the future! RandyB

Sounds like you have figured everything in. My 2-cents with over 500 CID is to start with the gears you have now (4.10), that might be just fine. After running it that way for awhile, you can always put more RPM to it later. The car might mph better than you think (145 vs 138?), and drive the RPM up accordingly. And all that torque will likely pull the 4.10/31" just fine (especially if you are running a torqueflite).

Re: 540" short block - 05/08/10 01:19 PM

Thanks Jim. Maybe I will try the 4.10 gears and see how the car runs. It would be great to not have to buy new gears.

Re: 540" short block - 05/08/10 02:21 PM

Tom,not that I'm an expert on this, but I agree with Jim on the gearing! Why spend MORE money when You might not have to! Even though you're going with a taller tire, with ALL the torque that 540's going to make,I would say try what ya got first! Just my Randy

Re: 540" short block - 05/09/10 01:17 PM

i just got thru putting 540 in 67 coronet
on alky @3800#
took 456 out put 410 in on 29 tall tire
i do think the motor will go 7 plus rpms
plus it do not think it needs to spin there
i figure the max hp is @620ish ?
the block is just a standard production
but does have girdle, crete but i dont think anyone should use a stock block in this combo
jmo
solid cam stx 22 with 1.6 rocker makes it like
720 lift
rpm heads ported max
i really think should found some 370 gears
put in the traps around 6300 i do not want to spin above 6800 rpms
