As far as the rods, you normally get what you pay for. Scat seems to have good comments on this board. Eagle is what I have and they have been good so far. Anything you buy has to be checked tho. As far as the crank, I really don't know. I bought mine as a redone 440 offset ground crank for a b-engine. There may be better ways now tho.
Good luck

you never really know until you start mocking it up. plan on problems, that way you won't be disappointed. 440source has several kits for 383. i'll prolly end up building a long rod 438 with my aulde 383 block. check the 440source website. even if you don't get one of their kits, there's a lot of good info there.

I used a set of Eagle H beams 6.76 with Diamond pistons and a 440 3.75 stroke crank all I had to do was notch the bottom of the cylinders a little to clear the rod bolts.

would it be less expensive to have a 440 crank offset ground to 3.89-91 w BBC journal size since i have a free one? whats the cost on doing that? anyone gone that route? dan

I have slowly been putting together all the parts for this combo and am just about ready to put it together. 383 block, .040 over. Diamond pistons, K1 6.7 rods BBC journal and Eagle 3.9 crank. The rods came from DRAM. The crank was on clearance from Mancini, and had BBM rod journals, which I had turned down locally - around 200$. Can't report anything else because it is not together yet. Depends on your definition I suppose, but I am not convinced its going to end up being all that "cheapo".

I have done that, hundreds of other Mopar racers have to back in the day before the cheaper stroker cranks came out. I have two 440 motors that I built in the last three years that used the 3.910 stroke, one was a forge steel 440 magnum crank that I had done in SO Ca five or six years ago. The other was a BRC race crank that had the same 3.91 stroke that I got on a deal from a crankshaft grinding company in SO CA The 440 offset grinding cost me 325.00 including having it heat treated (Nitrited)after the grinding That motor is in my car now, I used a set of 7.100 long BB Chevy H beam rods and a set of Diamond pistons in that motor, the other motor got a set of Eagle 7.100 long BB Chevy rods also and I used a set of KB forged pistons in that motor, it made 720 HP at 7000 RPM on a DTS engine dyno. It is a bracket race motor with a lot of good parts. Mine is a pump gas 6 pak street motor in a 1971 Duster that runs low elevens cork up on Oregon pump gas, it is for sell for the right price

Re: 383 B cheapo stroker combo... help! - 04/30/10 07:32 PM

Dan as long as the crank is a true low deck piece , meaning it doesn't have huge hemi or 440 counterweights , there are no clearance issues. I did no grinding on my 383 and didn't have to use a stroker windage tray either, a standard issue milodon tray clears no problem.

I'd use either the scat or the eagle rod .

Re: 383 B cheapo stroker combo... help! - 05/01/10 01:56 PM

Met a guy here in Charlotte the other night with a 68 383 Charger. He wants to build a stroker and he has a 440 block but I advised him to build his 383 as a stroker just to keep the engine bay looking oem!

Nothing wrong with the 4.25 bore.....7000 hp Blown Nitro Hemis only run a ~4.18" bore these days!!

Re: 383 B cheapo stroker combo... help! - 05/03/10 02:38 PM

i,m leaning towards a 3.9 crank, 6.700 chevy rods in my 383... since it will have stock intake and exh..what cam should i run to have a smooth idle when its WARM? will have 3:55 gears more than likely..also can i use say a 750 holley and stick on the factory side hung bowls? [so it still looks like a mopar carb] thanks guys dan
