Help with paint scheme on race car..... - 04/14/10 08:59 PM

My 72 Duster Top Sportsman car (see signature) is in the body shop to get repaired from a wall mishap from last year. Well long story short the body shop can't duplicate the candy green paint that was on it and is going to have to paint the whole car. So its basically a blank canvas now! So should I just go back exactly the same(without candy paint) or should I completely change everything on it? I'm lost! How do you come up with a good paint scheme? Anybody got any ideas for me???

since i have looked at almost every color green out there for my duster...
i can say..if you go with green ..house of colors has a killer series of greens that are not candies..but look as good..
you may be able to go with one of them.

fwiw..iam partial to ol school prostock looking paint jobs on dusters...
i have always been attracted to your paint/car though

is there damage to the area above the door handle on the car..
if now..just do the bottom half of both sides and leave the hood/roof/trunk..and panel the sides.
fwiw.
cheapst.

He had to try to match the house of kolors organic green candy on it because the quarter panel was toast. Couldn't make it look right, it ended up blotchy. The whole car is painted green right now but blotchy all over because he can't get the candy to do right for him. I don't know what to do. I like blue personally but not for sure on that either....

I would think if he's having trouble and the green is blotchy, then candy blue is going to end up blotchy also. I can't recall the actual name but the new viper (snake skin green - I think) looks really good with silver. I like your old scheme so maybe do a variation of it with those colors.

Yeah I've seen that snake skin green...its pretty cool. Whatever color I do...green, blue, whatever it won't be candy. Just a basic metallic color or something. Everyone seems to dig the scheme it already had on it so I may just go back with it with a slight variation. I didn't really ever care for the scheme but I guess I might be the only one!

House of Color is a pain in the you know what. I have found a new Candy that will work great with a white or silver base. It is called Carisma.I think it is made by BASF and it shoots great and looks great. Get your shop to check it out.

Don't know for sure yet! Put a new motor combo in it and the mishap with the wall happened on the first pass. It went 1.13 in 60' on just motor before the accident. It should run 5.0s on motor in the 1/8. We are gonna spray it with a fogger a little bit and try to get some 4.60s out of it. We are going to run in a series that runs off of a 4.70 index.

As a general rule, I like a color scheme to work with the lines of the car; someone already mentioned vintage PS schemes, which often worked with the side contours.
As for the blotchiness, that sounds like a pressure or application problem, though I've never sprayed that particular paint. There are a lot of modern car colors to choose from, but formulation & coverage is sometimes an issue. It may be that you need to work with another painter. If you can get your hands on the "what's new" issues of National Dragster, there are a lot of ideas you can find there, too.

Here is what I have come up with so far.....

Change the green to an electric blue metallic. Lose the wavy checkered flag. Keep the yellow to tangerine fade on the bottom. Keep the stripes basically the same except change the colors on them to silver on top and purple on bottom. Do you guys think that would look good? I just don't like the checkered flag for some reason?? I also just like blue a lot better than green. And the black MOPAR letters will be gone also. Its not much different than it is now just basically changing the colors. Any thoughts??? I just wish I could find a way to see what it would look like first....

What about a fade like this but with candy green instead?

My dart is Viper Blue and i love it.
The color takes horrible pics, but in person the pearl and metallic look really nice!!

If you want more pics up close i will take them.
