110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 02:53 AM

What are your thoughts on mixing 110 and 93 unleaded at a 50/50 ratio, for a 10.25,Eddy headed 448? Any benefits at all? Thanks for your opinions and/or experiences with trying this! Randy B.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 03:07 AM

Probably overkill.
I think that with aluminum heads and 10.25:1 , pump gas would be O.K.
I don't know that there is any more power to be had by using more octane than you need to avoid detonation.
You could throw a little more timing at it if it likes it , but unless you are near detonation , I bet 93 would be fine.

Randy I gotta agree with this as I have 10.0 comp with iron 906 heads and I run on 92 pump with no problems at all. I did use the quench pad pistons but unless you plan to run a ton of timing you should be fine on pump. I run 36 to 38 total all in by 2000. Ron

I run 10.15 to 1, .050 quench, 440-1 heads, timing at 36. I tried 50/50 92 with C12, Tried 2/3 92 with 1/3 C12. Mine runs better on just 92. And a lot cheaper.

I agree with most that you should not need anything more than 93 octane pump at that CR. It should be faster on that octane too. Especially if you have a quench distance of .055" or less.

no gain. my 11.2 hemi only gets a little splash of 110 and dont even think i need it but afraid of detonation .its a full race application.i think your safe with 93 octane.

Why not just use E85?

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 12:34 PM

I agree with the E85 makes it more economical to race and will have my car burning corn again soon.

However if E85 is not available around you or you do not want to convert your carb you will be fine with 92-93. I have about the same setup as you 11.1:1 comp ratio 440 with eddys. I run strait 110 when I race but see no gain. My main reason for running it is consistency of the fuel. You dont always know what is coming out of the pump.

If the car is going to be a driver and an occasional racer I would run 92-93. If shes not running as consistent as you would like her too dump 5 gallon of 110 in when you get to the track.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 03:40 PM

I have raced my 10.? to 1 (supposidly)408 on pump 93 ,87 with 104 added ,and 110 Sunoco. It runs the same ET's on all three.I use 110 Sunoco now mainly because i like the way it smells over pump gas ,and like was said earlier i dont worry about consistancy of fuel or detonation.Mine is a drag only car that i dont race much and i dont use enough to make much difference in $$.I found a local station here in my town that sells it to the dirt track guys .Its 5.99 a gallon at the station ,lots cheaper than buying it at the track.I dont think you will notice a gain with your compression level either ,but thats not the only reason to run it IMO...

dont think you will need a 50/50 ratio but splashing it never hurts. Detonation is one of the worst things to do to a race motor, so a little splash of the good stuff for added insurance never hurts.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 04:05 PM

There are a few of us here that run similar combos.10.3 to 10.7 to 1 440's with Edelbrock heads and run on pump premium.
Back to back tests against 110 show no difference.
As far as being consistent, some of the winningest cars out here run pump premium,I wouldn't worry about it.Just buy from a reputable station.

Randy I'm sure you will be fine using 93 but its all
about the cam.... LSA and when the intake closes...
do a compression test and see what the pressure is...
most will say that if its below 200psi it should be fine
(maybe closer to 190 psi)

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 06:12 PM

Wallace Racing has a calculator that will calculate your octane rating for a particular mix. I am currently running 110, on a 11:1 iron head 451, but at $8.50/gallon I am going to investigate trying a mixture which produces a 100-105 finished product. At 50/50 110 to 93 I can get around 102, which I am hoping will suffice. My effective compression is only 9.50, so I am think I should be ok.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 03/19/10 11:44 PM

Thanks everybody! Mike,I distinctly remember that my cranking pressure was right at 185,last spring when I checked it! Even though it runs great on the 92-93 octane, even with 38-40* total timing,I might just "splash" a little 110 in at the track, like Matt suggested. Maybe 1 gal. 110 and 4 gal. 92-93. Just for the track. I usually run the timing around 35-36 on the street, and never notice any detonation whatsoever! Thanks again Guys! Randy B.

Only one mention so far ........ but I have to admit , I love the smell of burning race gas too.
It would be worth a splash just for that.

10.75:1 in the Charger , E heads, solid cam, etc,,,and i just run pump gas......

I'd think for the stret especially w/ the aluminum heads 93 is fine. At the track you could maybe get 3 gallons mix w/ 5 of 93 and blast it. I was running 93 in my 440-6 w/ 10.7:1 (iron heads) with no problems. That was 36*. I was going to get a few gallons of 110 at the track and bump it to 38*

If its the smell your after they sell that great smelling "groovy grape" that you can dump inthere but then everybody follows you through the pits sniffing your pipes! LOL.I used to run that in the bee and the dart just to make people wonder.they have all different flavors too. I love your GTX BTW,have a soft spot for those.Good luck!

Thanks,Chris! I do LOVE the smell of "race gas" but I was looking for power enhancement possibilities with the x-tra octane! BTW...out of curiousity, where did you purchase the Groovy Grape?

summit has it - $12.95 a bottle.they have fruit punch, strawberry, cotton candy, you name it. I think they should have one named VICTORY. Who doesn't like that smell??

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440 - 03/20/10 02:14 PM

Randy, you don't need any race fuel with your combo, inmo. My 446 is almost identical to yours and it made best power at 35* total timing on Dwaynes dyno.

Try racing it with 35* and see if it picks up. Maybe splash in a few ounces of the good stuff to achieve the smell you're looking for.

Thanks Ron, I'll try 35* 1st trip to the track, hopefully in early April! Still need to purchase some slicks. The last set I bought off of Gary Jacob(Jake's Automotive)They were slightly used and he gave me a great deal on them! $100.00! They were Goodyear Eagle Radials. The GTX REALLY liked them! Very stable on the top end, too! If you know anyone selling slightly used one's,let me know! Cotton Candy flavor,eh.... that's what race gas smells like to me! LOVE that smell! Randy B

After thinking about Chris's suggestion of using a fuel additive, plus the fact that my wifey complains about me smelling like a gas can every time I come into the house, after tinkering with the GTX,I ordered a bottle of Cotton Candy from Summit! I'm not going to tell her!...I'll wait for her to say something! I'm sure it'll be an improvement! Randy B.

LOL... so now you'll smell like cotton candy.... I
dont think that will cure the problem Randy... women
(most women) just dont like the smell of engines... LOL
I'm glad my wife met me when I worked in the fuel
lab and ALWAYS smelled like gas.... was funny, she
finally got use to the different gas smells and could
tell if I was working with E-85 or regular gas...
she still cant stand diesel

My fuel line in the bee coming out of the tank would drip every now and then and when I would leave the car in the trailer for any amount of time it smelled big time like grapes in there, everyone always wanted to know what the heck that was.We have all smelled that car going through the pits and said "what the heck kinda fuel is that guy running?Sorry to get off topic Randy.

You guys are really lucky. Around here they dont sell 93 pump anymore....So when you guys talk about your pump gas mopars they wouldnt get too far with the 91 they have around here....and most places have stopped selling E85 around here as well.
I mix my 87 with 112 on a 50/50 mix with 10.5 compression in my 512 stroker.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440 - 04/01/10 10:00 PM

With the closed chamber edelbrocks the .030 over 440 in my challenger is 10.2:1, .040 quench. It runs fine on our 91 octane calif pump swill, but does at times suffer from run-on. I've heard that was a problem with six-pack setups back in the day, and I have the idle solenoid on there, but hasn't helped much.
If I mix a couple of gallons of 110 in there, the run-on goes away.

I used to HAVE to mix in 110 at a 1:5 or 6 ratio when it had the iron 902's on it. It was only 9.8:1 then, but with the open-chamber iron heads, it pinged badly on straight 91.

Re: 110 unleaded mix for a 10.25 compression 440? - 04/01/10 11:31 PM

Some race fuels don't mix , you won't hear detonation but it WILL be there , the chamber will decipher the higher octane & could ping on the low stuff , go conservative on the timing & pull the plugs as this will tell you if you need race gas or not , the motor will slow down the more timing you put into it (race fuel) if running optimum for pump gas , the same motor running lower octane will run faster than a motor advanced for higher octane , the piston does'nt like the a/f lit off to far down the hole.

10.25: 1 w/93 octane: no problem.
I lied.
Problem: can't run as much advance as I would like.
