Missile Challenger PRO Stock - 03/08/10 02:54 AM

Thanks to Dick Oldfield, I now have some more photos - most of these are of the initial build for the Challenger - originally it had a torqueflite and basically a superstock motor.

Enjoy, and if you have any of this time - post them here

You have to remember that was 1970, the psychedelic era was still in force. Very groovy if you ask me. It looks like the paint was gold instead of the yellow that I see a lot. Maybe that tied in with the Jeg's sponsorship?

I thought the horizontal bar on the main loop was too high. I suppose they put it there for a head rest, but it leaves a big distance to the door bars.

I've always liked the Motown Missile paint schemes that they used on their Challenger and Barracuda pro-stockers.

Re: Missile Challenger PRO Stock - 03/15/10 01:40 AM

I think I like the gold/bronze color better than the yellow. The lettering is easier to read on the later design. I'm sure the Jeg's sponsorship had something to do with the yellow paint. The gold leaf on the 72 MM was the best of all of the Missiles. Black and gold just seem to look good together. I seem to remember a Corvette ran by BoLaws that had black and gold paint. I always liked that car even if it was a Cheebie.

Re: Missile Challenger PRO Stock - 03/18/10 10:00 PM

Anyone notice the hood scoop switch, the 70 started off with a six-pack scoop, what intake did they use? Then mid-season switched to what looks like a fabricated metal scoop, with a tunnel-ram. This scoop might be the prototype of the early pro-stock style scoop later made of fiberglass & abs plastic. Then the Missile team sold the Challenger.

R&R - original intake was the crossram with the 6pk hood scoop - picture 22 above. Basically started out with a good Super Stock motor.
