Bearing clearance ??? - 03/07/10 04:17 PM
What is the recomended rod and main bearing clearances on a 440 stock crank, after market H-beam rods. Also what are the acceptable min/max to the recomended clearances? This a drag race only engine, no no2, no blower.
Thanks, Brian

.001 per 1" of Journal Size. If you deviate, MORE is ALWAYS better.

This is really a builder preference item, and application specific. There is no hard number +/-, but most race builder's want their number within 0.0003"
A starting point would be 0.0023" on the rods, and 0.0030" on the mains. Many race applications/builders want more.

mine is set at .0025 on the mains and .0023-.0025 on the rods and going strong.
In an absolutely ideal world, (for most applications) you'd want .0025 on the rods and .003 on the mains. Realistically, with real world production tolerances, it's great if you can get between .002-.003 on the rods and .0025-.0035 on the mains.
