Drake Simmons, known here as "MrMoparRacing" has been ill and in ICU for quite a while. I just got word he is on life support. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. He's only 23 years old, and the family recently lost his uncle John last fall.

From the Summit Motorsports Park website:
Fellow racers and friends, it has come to our attention that one of our own needs our assistance in the form of prayers. As many know Drake Simmons has not been feeling well. Just over two weeks ago he was admitted to the Lorain Community Hospital with pneumonia. This morning we received word that his condition has worsened to the point they have placed him on life support.
The family has politely declined any visitors, but has asked that we send our support in the form of prayers at this time. We will post updates as they become available.

Drake passed away about half an hour ago. I hurt for his family, who has been through so much, and I hurt with the rest of his racing family. I'll miss you, buddy!

I knew drake from the times we ran the PMS Xpress dragster at Norwalk... always looked forward to seeing him and his family.

Although I do not know Drake, his passing is symbolic of how fragile life truly is.
Perhaps when parting company with someone, we should do that with the subconscious thought that we may not see them again. The passing of one of us diminishes us all.
My prayers are with his family. RIP Drake

tears cant explain the pain i am feeling. you were such a good friend and a good role model to anyone that met you. you were there no matter what. i cherish the moments we had together at the chrysler races and the halloween classic. rest in peace brother...you will never be forgotten.

WOW! How does a 23 year old kid die from pneumonia? Again we are reminded of how fragile life really is. I didn't know Drake but my heart aches for him and his family. This should tell everyone to enjoy everything to it's fullest because we just don't ever know...

I received the news last night around 11:30 pm. Drake was such a great guy and so nice to everyone he came in contact with. He was a great announcer and will truly be missed. I remember the first time I met Drake, 4 years ago at the Halloween Classic. Then we hung out at the Moparts Christmas Party that Scott Koffel put together.
I hate that when I last saw Drake was last year at the Chrysler Classic Mopar World Finals. He made it to the finals and I would have never thought, that would be the last time I would see him.
RIP Drake, you will truly be missed.. At such a young age, you made a HUGE impact on the Drag Racing and Mopar world.

He bought a 904 off me almost a year ago. He knew who I was and knew my car. We talked cars and racing for a couple hours. Was one of the nicest kids you would ever want to meet.
Tried to buy summit parts thru him. Could not get a hold of him for a long while. I had a feeling things were not good but this is stunning.

wow What a shock Melissa just told me this afternoon that Chasity got a phone call late last night. We would call Summit ask for Drake he would always help us out. First time I called he said your Chasity and Melissa's dad. Always a nice helpful MOPAR persons.

Scott Koffel would like anyone who is going to the CCEvents Swap Meet/Banquet to please bring any photos you might have of Drake or his car. He would like to make up a photo album for the family. I also have heard of some fundraisers that might be happening there this weekend, as well as in the near future. If anyone brings donations to the BEA party, I'll get them to the family Sunday.

He has been sick since late October. He went to the doctors several times, had different meds, throat infections, then he just seemed to break down. What killed him in the end was complications of pneumonia, but i think his body and his immune system had been so weakened that he couldn't fight it off.

Very Sad to hear. Having a 24, 20 and 17 year old I cannot imagine what the parents are going through. The loss of loved ones and family is never easy but when it is someone so young with what we think is a lifetime of experiences ahead of them it is even tougher.....Prayers out to the family and friends.

There had to be over a thousand people there tonite. 2 1/2 hour line. While in line, got to meet some long-missed racers. Saw Dave and Suzie Koffel, Mr and Mrs.Wild Bill. Very sad. They were playing classic rock, and slide shows of his life. The world, AND our little-tiny racing world is a much-lesser place.
I waited about 4 hours, I think it was because Russ was talking so much...My heart breaks a little more each time I think about the fact that he's gone. I'm leaving work at 9 to head to the funeral.

After racing at Norwalk for 15 years, I recall watching Drake grow up. Drake will be very sadly missed. I did not have a chance to pay my respect as I just found out today.
If anyone has any info on found raisers, please post.
Today I am so proud of my racing family! I'm proud to be associated with such a great group of people whose support in times of great sorrow and tragedy can be so uplifting! Every time someone needs something, ANYTHING, we respond en masse to help each other out. Let's keep giving as much love and comfort as we can to the Simmons and Minnich families and show them how much we care for them! Thank you to everyone here who has shown your support.
A few folks are talking about setting up benefits for the family in Drake's memory. I'll keep everyone posted when plans become solid.

Ron,I'm glad you and Mel were there today.It's going to be hard for awhile to know that his smiling face won't be there this year.I feel that all the church and funeral people did a great job.It was wonderful to see all the people out there that Drake had touched and i am glad for the time i had with him as he made me a better person.If you or Mel need any help let me know and i will let you know on the stuff as it gets firmed up with Charlie and Eddie for the race at Norwalk.

I am way late on this one, haven't been on the computer for over a week. Shocked and saddened are the only two words that come to my mind. Like most, I seemed to run into Drake everytime I was at Norwalk. He always seemed interested in what I was up to. I didn't know him that well, but he seemed like a really good kid.

I hate to bring this back up Butttt. I was at the Detroit Autorama showing a car the last weekend of Febuary. I happened to run accross the very large Summit Display, on a trip thru My son got an autograph from Greg Anderson(Cool Guy), then I turned and started to talk to what I would have figured to be sales reps. I had made mention that I wanted to pass my Condolences along in regards to the loss of Drake Simmons. The worst part of this is that no one there ever heard of him and I know this is a familly site but I felt that was pretty Sh----ity they didnt know him. I just found that hard to believe from such a large company that not even a mention of him by email or posting on the web site of his loss or there loss. Again I never met Drake but what I read on here he was a great guy. This has just been eating at me for the last few days just wanted to share.
