Best shelf Roll cage..what are you using? - 01/29/10 04:32 PM

What are you guys using for a shelf roll cage and how do you like the fit, and finish...

Im looking at a Chassis Engineering, or a S&W Kit...
Price between the two is similar..

I also looked at a Jegster..They are very reasonably priced..
Im looking at a 12-14 point BTW

That is a good question Bob..
My experience is that most of if not all the cages out there are off quite a bit. The last one I bought(Chassis Eng.12pt) wasn't even close. I had new forward bars bent for the A-pillars because there was no way CE's would come close to fitting. I'm thinking about bending my own for the Savoy.
Good luck!

I've got a 10-point S&W for a 68 B-body, pretty decent for the price although I think the front bars could have followed the windshield posts a little closer. From the seat though they line up with the post so there is really no more vision restriction than from the edge of the windsheild itself. They may have improved the fit by now, I got that kit in 97-'98 I think. BTW it can be upgraded as most kits can to a 12-14pt.

Yeah I guess A-pillars was the term I was trying to remember. They say your memory is the second thing to go........I forget what the first is....

R&J installed my CE bar and he said it was one of the better kits he had worked with but, it`s just a bar so who knows about their cage kits.

Any scouting reports on Art Morison ?
They talk a good game with CAD design etc. and they price for mild steel was pretty fair.

Bob..I have an Alston Chassisworks cage kit...I opted for the rear bars that retain the rear seat and the alston swing out door bars...It fit pretty decent. But no kit will fit like a custom one will.

Just finished welding in my new one from alston.
It was a 12 point kit from Alston. I like how tight I was able to get it with a little dash alterations. I dont know why they dont send floor plates for the rear bars however. All you get in the kit is 4 main front floor plates. Main hoop you have to pull together with a cumalong to get away from the sides to weld all the way around.
12 point cost $450 with one swing out kit. I drove to sac to get it. Front bars you have to ben yourself.

Well
The A pillar pars is what I am worried about. I hope the fit tight against the firewall and window pillars, so a I just notch the dash and be done with it..
I also want the dash bar to be tucked under the dash, and provide a mount for the home fab'd steering column I am making.
Pretty simple and light is the main issue. I just ordered a Flaming River Universal U-Joint that replaces the old rag joint with a new joint, a piece of 3/4 tubing, etc a light weight steering wheel and wheel disconnect.
Should save 20+ lbs over the factory steering column setup

I have learned that the cheap cage kits all use .134" wall welded seam tubing and not .120 DOM tubing which adds a fair bit of extra weight.

Even my Alston cage kit is welded seam tubing...DOM is certainly lighter.

I got a 12 point from competition engineering and it was junk. I had to make a new halo bar nine inches wider, had to tweak the main hoop and re-notch all the ends of each bar. I also added some bars and used .120 same as the new halo bar. paid around $280 for the kit and almost that much for two twenty foot lengths of .120 DOM which is actually not easy to get.

I agree with 23T
I have a S&W 10 point kit in my Coronet and although its a good kit I think it could have been better.

Try looking up www.autoweldchassis.com

I have herd verry good stuff about them, I have a 1968 Belvedere post car and thats whare I am Gonna get my cage from.

I have the S&W kit in my Charger with custom rear down bars to follow the fastback roofline. I'm very pleased with the fit. I went with the DOM. Same cost as chromoly, but I could MIG it. I don't have a TIG at home.

Re: Best shelf Roll cage..what are you using? - 01/30/10 06:41 AM

I think most of the kits are .134 to give a little cushion for inspection. There have been cases where the DOM was a little under .120 and the bare minimum (at least it used to be) by rules is .118". I know of one guy that couldn't get his car to certify because more than one bar was too thin when sonic tested and had to replace half the cage. I don't remember if it was a kit or not, been several years, just something to keep in mind.

I did the Jegs kit. Main hoop and halo were fine. The front kickers were just odd, and I had to build my own.
