SB into a Colt - 01/21/10 04:53 PM
I found a decent Colt locally, and started thinking about the 340 that I have in the garage. Has anyone ever done this before? I have always liked them, and think it would make a fun bracket car. I had one a few years ago, but it was a big tire tube car, not really what I wanted, so I traded it for something else. I would like to do this byself, but am kind of at a loss of where to start, and is it a fairly straighforward swap. I have a welder and the ability to fab decently, so I am not afraid of that.
Thanks
Dennis

Does this year have frame rails... you want to keep
them... am I correct. Start building the cage for
it.... of course this is after you have a game plan
for the car.... budget, trans, rearend... will it be
a street/strip car or race only
Mr p is rite plan it out. at first i had 7" slicks with the leafsprings and slid-a-links ran 10.40's with 1.40 shorttimes to fit a larger tire i needed to backhalf car

Now that is just plain COOL.
It would blow my mind to pull up next to a 4cyl Colt and get my clock cleaned.

It's been done; back in the 70's Hot Rod, or Car Craft (can't remember which one) did an artical about Bill Bragshaw putting one into a Colt wagon. I have the artical, just have to find the magizine again. It's not a swap for the faint of heart.

cant imagine how tight a small block or bb would be i needed shoehorns to put the 4cyl in mine if you want to go the easy way out the 4g63 is a direct bolt in with all factory made parts check out
www.projectzerog.com lot of 74,75.76 swaps done there the 4g make a lot of power buy from what i hear they'er not reliable any way that would be a different post back to the sb do a lot of measuring and make it turbo.......

Its much easier if you pull the inner fenders and
go to a coil over or a short style strut(not like
the long stock ones).... or just go with a tube
chassis.... I was going to build a 76 but my deal
fell through on the car

Strip only. And it does not need to be the fastest thing at the track either, just a bracket car. I think I can keep the budget under control if I do a lot of the work myself. As much as I would like to just drop it off at your shop, I can't afford that LOL

Yup, talking about your swap; the story is in the 1971 December Hot Rod. There was another member looking to do this swap about a year or so ago. I have to go into my library (big pile of magazines) to find it. I can copy it and mail it to you.

I did look up the info about the Mitsu 4cyl, that does not interest me at all.
thanks for the info though.

How about a sb into an Arrow? Basically the same thing as the colt?
Posted By: wyldebill
Re: SB into a Colt - 01/22/10 09:37 PM
from what i have read and seen a sb /904 fits the arrow ok. headers are where you run into trouble. i have seen a few with block hugger( street rod) type, and some with stock mannys.

on the 4g63 side, there are some super nasty turbo's

Re: SB into a Colt - 01/23/10 04:15 AM
Send a PM to Darrell. He has a 318 Arrow (same basic unibody as an Arrow), nicely done. Even retains the stock Mitsu shifter. Very cool little car.
I set a 440 in an stock chasss Arrow a few years ago just to see where everything would locate... downright ugly are the best words I can find to describe it. Small block is definitely the smarter move if you are thinking V8. Even with a 904, you still have to build a new trans tunnel, and mod the firewall for the distributor.

Heck I was going to put a hemi in the colt I tried
to get but it was going to be a tube chassis... but
the deal fell through on the car... Eric on the
board here has a BB 440 in his Arrow

Re: SB into a Colt - 01/23/10 05:15 PM
I have a 1980 D-50 truck with a 360 small block in it. I am pretty sure they have the same engine bay. They are both made by Mitsubishi. It has a fabbed trans tunnel and block hugger headers. I plan on bracket racing it this year,I went to test and tune last year to get the bugs worked out. It ran 7.55 at 90 with 1.56 60 ft.

COLT340 Where did did you get those headers.I think a set like that would be a lot less restrictive than the block huggers I have on mine.

Re: SB into a Colt - 01/23/10 08:04 PM
D-50, does it have a motor plate, or did you make mounts? Can you take some good pics of the engine bay?
B1Killer, I had one similat to the RJ one a few years ago. It was REAL tight with the huge tubs and how the cage was built, so I had to get rid of it. Cool car though.

Re: SB into a Colt - 01/23/10 09:31 PM
Headers were a set of hookers for a A body. Passenger header fit with a little help from a ball peen. Drivers side the 2 center tubes were modified and the rear tube goes thru the fenderwell and around the frame.

Motor is held in by a plate on each side
where the motor mounts bolted on to the block.

Re: SB into a Colt - 01/23/10 09:45 PM
This is a 74 colt and it has a little longer engine bay than they earlier colts. The center of the firewall was cut out and set back about 5 to 6"

My '74 had a 340 small block in it and was driven on the street for a couple years. I regret I never took one picture of the install or the car in that trim. In 'mid '92 I started the big block project and finished it is late '93. Once again, no pictures. What was I thinking? It now has a 542 big block being installed. I will be taking some pictures this time.

Yeah it should be, 350 or so hp with an 8 valve head, in a car that weighs 2300 pounds at the most when its done, I dont see the need for a small block.

Al, I think I have some pics that you sent me a while back when I was playing with the Arrow chassis I had.
I will have to check my old PC to see if I can find some pics of the 440 shoved between it's limbs.

now that's a 4cyl i could live with in a Colt. How much modification was necessary to get it to fit? How did you adapt a 904? I'll take all the details you want to post.

Made a different cross member mainly to get the steering in front(add a rack) dakota rwd application oil pan, fabbed up motor mounts, The adapter is a hard to find one to adapt to a sb 904 bellhousing, the easier engine to do is the cloud car 2.4 as far as the adapter goes, ththey are readily available.

HAHA, no was there last summer, grew up in SW Michigan, Coloma. My brothers still live there, they have more Mopar stuff than Iacocca.
