locking dipstick

locking dipstick - 01/10/10 09:31 PM

So I'm explaining to my wife why I had to buy a locking tranny dipstick. I said that the lock was to prevent the tube from blowing out and putting fluid on the track. She said "where is the fluid going to go when it can't go out the dipstick?". I said "probably out the tranny breather hole". She said "so you really haven't solved anything with the locking dipstick".

Hmmmmmmm.......what's next: mandatory SFI approved catch cans?

Tell her the locking dipstick is to prevent spills during a rollover.

That is why they don't have women making the rules at NHRA....to much common sense!!!

Re: locking dipstick - 01/11/10 12:53 AM

the bottom of the dipstick is typically submerged in fluid so if the vent gets pluged or the tranny is building more preasure than the vent can deal with its going to push fluid out the dipstick tube. it does happen.

if the car roles over the fliud will poor out the vent not the dipstick tube.

a certain amount of presure will build before a seal leaks.

The CRT locking dip sticks are nice. I just installed the one that's designed to fit with the CSR shield. Went in without a problem.-Tom.

Well right now its the locking dip stick.... next
will be a roll over valve on the vent(which fuel
cells have) but its funny that the NHRA says you need
the locking dip stick but yet you arent required to
have a roll over valve on the vent..... brilliant
EDIT
A catch can isnt any good in a roll over(it has a
vent also)

And if NHRA prepped the tracks right there wouldn't be roll overs?

How much junk gets on the track during a rollover? I've never personally witnessed one. I know they don't want to clean up any more than necessary and rightfully so. I can't say that a locking dipstick it a bad idea but it's just one more dang thing to buy

Don.

Actually it gets pretty messy ... but it depends on
if the car lands upside down and for how long...
if the car has breathers on the valve covers, does
it have a roll over valve on the fuel tank, trans
and rear end.... by rights if it needs to breath
via a vent it can and will pour out

Has anyone put one of those locking dipsticks in a car with fenderwell headers? Mine is pretty close and the CRT one looks like plastic.
