Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec

Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec - 12/27/09 07:27 PM

I am curious as to what the extra cost of running faster than 10 second quarters is (ballpark) not including engine, etc. What I'm interested in are the yearly fees from NHRA / IHRA, required safety equipment I wouldn't already be using in the low 10's. I plan on running E.T. brackets at local tracks mostly. Also, is it worth it to run one or two Summit Racing series races? The 65 Dart will be getting a 4 link back half, 33x15 slicks, full cage, pinto front, stroked 440, 727, and a 9 inch. I'm jumping the gun, as this build will take awhile as I am doing everything myself, and money of course.

Thanks,
Roy

Enigine diaper, chute over 150 mph, pants and jacket, cage with window net instead of roll bar,9.90 license, physical to get license. Those are the main ones I can think of.

To be honest unless you going sub 9s it isnt worth
all the money and headaches... certing the cage,
buying the ND mag to get a NHRA license, medical,
added safety equipment(pants, jacket, gloves, neck
collar)... I'm either finding a driver for my car
OR going back to 10.0 ... JMO

At what point do you you need to get a chassis certified?I thought it was 9.49 and faster,or is this wrong?

once you buy all the equipment, its a $100.00 fee for license renewal every 2 years and a cage recert. every 3 years which i dont know the new fee.might be $200.00 by now.
its funny, i raced 3 years going 9.80 in my dodge with no cage and no license, as soon as i went 9.40 at englishtown, all eyes were on me and i got pinched.
from that point on, i needed all equipment, and license, and new cage with cert.
i got everything and ever since no one has ever checked at any track i race at for the last 5 years.

I know that feeling my car is certified, but I ain't.
I have been worn many times, but 2010, I must
correct this it almost cost me a money race here
@ PBI.
Which I can't figure out, most of the cars that day
look like death traps

Re: Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec - 12/28/09 12:08 AM

I've never wanted to go slower in almost 50 years of racing but had 5 way bypass surgury in 2003 and had to jump thru NHRA hoops to re-license. I still ran the car, starting in 2nd gear, short-shifting to run 10's. Had big fun. Everyone wanted to see if I could "run the new number". As I've posted before....NHRA phys,EKG..$430...Chassis cert..$230...being able to run 9's...ah well...tear down that net, take off your clothes, run 10.00....PRICELESS.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll probably go with 440 cubes and iron heads. I still plan on building the chassis the same way. You never know...

Re: Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec - 12/30/09 01:56 PM

I have often considered this, slowing to 10.00. I believe I would just build a 400 +.030, some small port aluminum heads, and keep it cheap. The smaller cubes will help a lot in the traction department, make the car much more of a no brainer to set up.

I would still build a good chassis for a safe and
consistent car.... just use a smaller engine OR use
low shift points... plus you can get away with a lower
stall converter which is usually cheaper(all this is
still dependent on the final weight)

I think about slowing it up to 10.0 almost every year. But I haven't done it...
IHRA is only slightly less expensive than NHRA for running 9.00-9.99. No chassis cert needed, no pants or neck collar (just 3.2A-5 jacket), no driver medical, less member/license cost. But most of the equipment requirements are the same.

Re: Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec - 12/30/09 03:24 PM

When I go to bracket race I usally slow my car down
by shifting @ like 6000, instead of 7600,
this way I don't have no issues with track officials, only
have issues with them when I run it all out, no NHRA license.
Car is certified, but I'm not Oh, I forgot Im certified 730
but that don't count

Re: Extra cost of going quicker than 10 sec - 12/30/09 03:39 PM

I added weight, short shifted and backed the timing off on my car this year to run 10.00.

Actually it was pretty killer for bracket racing. I could make a pass and add weight and put the car on 10.00 and keep it there through eliminations.

I am getting the car certified, getting my license again and turning it loose this year though....

I already pulled a running 440 and 727 out of a '74 New Yorker I have for the Dart. I'll probably just get an original forged crank to replace the cast one, or to save money, just find closed chamber heads to bump up the compression and stick a cam and intake / carb, to help get racing sooner. Then save up for a little more serious build.

I am still going to back half and full cage with pinto front. Someone before me cut out the floor, so it will get an aluminum floor. I will build the car as if I'm going a lot faster. I will also probably use an engine diaper after seeing crash pics of a historic Studebaker at Muncie last year at the big end barrel rolling and taking out one of the large posts holding up the time display at about 6 feet up! I heard NHRA offered him a Studebaker to build again. Sorry, I don't remember his name or what he decided to do.

If you get it certified the car should be worth more if you sell it.
I tried to call to send my liscense runs and pysicall in for 9.99 ,but NHRA on vacation till 4th.
Don't need diaper unless you run super gas in a div or national event , but can run brackets without it .
window net
gloves
neck collar
fullface helmet
5layer jacket
5layer pants
shoes open cockpit
going nines not pricelessthey accecpt M/C VISA
