The end of "my" era....

The end of "my" era.... - 12/20/09 05:23 PM

2009 is winding down, and it will be the first year since 1991 that I have not made a pass down the 1/4 mile. It was a good run. Expenses, rules, family activities have left the car in the trailer. I'm now officially a "keyboard" racer

How do you feel inside about this? Are you sad or is it alright? I walked away from drag racing discusted with NHRA and its politics with the sportsamn racers and "stock" rules changes in 1988, I came back after a while It is okay to take a break or even quit, if you want to There is more to life than drag racing, there is Bonniville LOL, Just kidding I did take up flying after quitting the first time, that is real expensive and it is not a lot of fun Great way to get somewhere quick when you want to, 45 minutes of flying versus 3+hrs of driving for me to go to Las Vegas from Hesperia,CA. Last question, will we see you racing at the MATS race I certianly hope so

I feel your pain, brother, I haven't been down like this since '83.

It might be a couple years before I surface again, but I will not say I'm retired until I can't get up from laying on a cold concrete floor.

Good luck for next year.

I haven't raced a whole lot lately, but now that things have settled down I plan on coming out with 2 cars next year.

I know the feeling....I only raced a few times this year also...It boiled down to $$...Either race and not try to finish my car, or build my motor and set out...I couldnt do both..
But next spring is going to rock

J, Man do I understand your pain! I love to race, It makes me feel like im on the top of the world. But things that have happened in the last two years have taken there tolls on me and my life. A divorce that still is not over with yet, not knowing if I will have to sell everything and start over with nothing. Not knowing what the next day will bring. Not seeing my daughter has caused nothing but pain in my heart. The economy and no luck looking for other work. I have done the best I can, and I try to keep my chin up no matter whats been put in front of me. All I can offer is this advice, Stick to your dreams and wants and some day the sun will shine on you. It might be cloudy today but the the weather will change...I wish you the best of luck in the up coming year.....Phill

J I hear ya, November was 3 years since I sold my car, I really haven`t touched the new project much in the last year.
To be honest with the way things have been I have been slightly afraid to spend money on something that we all know would be almost impossible to recoup easily should something happen.
With that, One bright outlook, Bought this for the wife a couple of weeks ago and it IS getting a 100 shot, So at least this next season I.....er......We will at least get some "seat time" It will only be "ET chasing" but passes are passes.

J I certainly understand the situation. I put all my stuff up and quit racing for 7 years at one point when the kids were young. Family always takes priority, but mine are all getting old. Youngest is 17 now. Go enjoy the family and the occasional Harley ride.

Hey Jay - welcome to the bench racer group.

Uhhh not that I haven't talked to you now and then...

I have not run my car since 2004 - but still get out to SIR fairly regular. One of these days I may fire it up again.

The Colt didn't make the trip down the 1320 in 2009 either. This was due to the 4.15 crankshaft trying it's best to exit the block. The new 542 should be done the first part of January. That shoulds to me like a good reason to make some noise in 2010!

Nothing is forever. Don't see a birthday but I'll bet you're much younger than me and most of my racing buddies. There's (almost) always tomorrow! It's pretty hard to stay away for good after doing this as long as you have.

"The older I get the more work it is to have fun". I made it a few times last year but with the economy and my transmission issues it was to say the least a not so stellar year. New plans in the works for 2010 though maybe a little faster also. Hang in there and get that car out asap.

Jay, who knows when you will race again, but I bet you do, may be scaled back from the old days, but you'll be back out sometime, you enjoyed it too much IMHO, by the way you riding that Harley any? You know people do race those too. See you at the track some day, Glenn

Re: The end of "my" era.... - 12/22/09 05:38 AM

I hear ya.............I`ve raced less this year than ever before but drive the hell out of it on the street so that SOMEWHAT makes it a bit easier. Hopefully things will come around for ya!

Re: The end of "my" era.... - 12/22/09 05:40 AM

The car still runs...same old worn out short block, fresh trans, all else ok, but will need new belts, new slicks, guess I have to buy pants now .....so that's $500+ just to get it out of the driveway .....and by then the trailer tires (which were new last year) will be desert rotted and need replaced. gotta love that! I am considering a couple events before MaTS and then hit that show, but keeping up on $$ is a trick anymore. I do try to tow the trailer a couple miles from the house and unload the car and let it get up to temp. Still fires off even on the stinky fuel I still have.

....and YES, been riding the he77 out of the bike! Such a nice way to "get-a-way".

Best of luck to ya,Jay! I made it out a few times...Gonna freshen it up and try to go out again! Like I said before...If ya ever need anything from Goerends...I will be happy to pick it up and ship it to ya...Just got the deed to my dads farm...It is 7 miles south of St.Lucas...

Jay,
Last time my car was at the track was when we were at PINKS ALL OUT. New house, kids getting older, work hours cut 20%. Lifes good Jay. Got married in Sept. We'll all weather this storm but the rules are different.

BTW: Merry Christmas! hope the family is well.

I hear ya' Jay. From 100+ rounds a year, to 7 in the last 5 years, with none it the last 2. My day as with others, will come, I'm convinced. Also, I hear you on the safety experation dates, I have a set of Capt Nemo's (what happened to him?) belts, that I literally made 2 passes with, that are now expired. Slicks too. New but old.

Re: The end of "my" era.... - 12/26/09 02:02 PM

After starting in the late sixties, I sat on the sidelines from about 1983 until 2003, due to health issues and the focus on raising a family. I never sold anything, though, I had run a couple of Nostalgia Races in the mid nineties, but probably didn't put thirty runs on the car during that time.

In 2003, my oldest son dusted it off and bought it out, now he has his own NSS Wedge and a S/G Duster, and my youngest son has a stroker powered 71 Satelite. Myself, I'm back in the saddle again, doing the Nostalgia thing a few times a year.

As far as "my era" being over, my good friend Bob George reminds me I'm a dinosaur, and he's right. I'm reminded "my era" is over whenever I watch Pass Time, or overhear some young guys conversation in the lanes about new style equipment and I have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. They might as well be speaking French or something.

So, "my era" ended many, many years ago.

Re: The end of "my" era.... - 12/26/09 02:18 PM

Well my stituation may be a little different.
I only raced a few times ,but did have a REAL good season. However somehow it still feels "empty".
Can`t put my finger on it.
Am I bored or have I changed?
I have the cash to do most anything "reasonable" but am afraid to do it!
