Can somebody please explain to me why most of the rear disc brake kits I'm finding require green bearings on an 8-3/4"? I was always under the impression that the green bearings are a ball bearing and that's not exactly the ticket for something that is going to be turning, a lot, at speed.

probably because the green bearings are solid and don't need adjustment, the stock type have movement and could cause the rotor to hit the caliper. green bearings don't like to do a lot of turning though some have used them on the street for a while.

That is why the brake kit from DoctorDiff is the way to go. He properly designed a brake kit for the Mopar rearend so that it could retain the tapered roller bearings.

Most of the rear disc kits on the market (Wilwood, etc) are for drag racing and people don't care which bearing they use. The other kits on the market are designed to be cheap and easy to install because they are for the "looks" crowd. If you really want rear discs on a corner turner then you need to dig a little deeper with the research.
DoctorDiff is the only kit that I know that I'd put on a road course car. The Baer kit might be okay also but I haven't seen it in person.

3 reasons I offer my own rear disc brake kits that work with either stock or Green wheel bearings:
1. Most other kits incorporate a caliper bracket that doubles as a cumbersome bearing retainer, incompatable with stock bearings.
2. Most other rear caliper brackets have insufficient backspacing to allow for varying axle flange stand-out associated with adjustable wheel bearings.
3. Piston size in most other (street style) rear disc brake kits is too large. This usually results in a rear biased brake system.
