There are also 2 differnet street Hemi oranges. 67 and older is more pale, 68 and newer is more red-ish.

Nope, you want street hemi orange. It's more red than chevy orange, but race hemi orange is just plain orange. Which I like.

ok, street hemi orange it will be. i'll call mancini tomorrow. thanks

Re: hemi orange paint - 12/07/09 01:12 AM

There were actually only two factory orange colors; Race Hemi Orange (used on any engine painted orange from 1962-1968) which was a pale pumkin orange, and Street Hemi Orange, a more reddish shade of orange which was intended to be used on any engine painted orange from 1969-1971, there may have been some late 68 engines that recieved the Street Hemi Orange color.

Any other shade variables people have come up with over the years have simply been to slight shade variations between batches of paint.

I also like how you end up wearing some of the paint, no matter how hard you try to keep it off your fingers!

Also a good idea to put some good primer on first. The mopar performance paints don't seem to cover very well. I always buy one more can than I think I'll need. Took 5 cans to cover a 426 max wedge with cross ram intake! lol, then it took half a can to fix the browned paint on the valve covers from the heat of the manifolds after I ran it on the dyno!

Plasti Kote is the best as far as spray bombs go.Rust Oleum also has engine paint, but I don't know who sells it.

auto zone and advanced don't sell plasti-kote anymore. i believe they now sell dupli-color. plasti-kote is all i would use, now its hard to find. i'm going to order from mancini this time.

Re: hemi orange paint - 12/07/09 05:53 PM

Be wary of the Plasti-Kote Hemi orange paint in spray bomb. It is more like a tint than opaque color. They changed the formula a couple years back and it does not cover like it used to.

Yes the cans dont work to good if at all. I got tired of half the cans of the MP paint not working so I went and just found a color that looked close and used it. This is Dupli-color I believe. Its very nice as it goes on thick and covers everything real nice. Ron

Does anyone other than Mopar make Race Hemi Orange? Spray or brush on?

Re: hemi orange paint - 12/08/09 05:12 AM

Frank Badelson sells Race Hemi & Street Hemi Orange, as well as Chrysler Red, Blue, and Turqoise. He sells it in pints or quarts, it's a VERY high quality match to original

Prices are reasonable and I've found that one small can will do several engines

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's the same paint that Roger sells, they are business partners. I'm not sure what makes you come to that conclusion

I painted this engine in 1992, this picture was taken last year (this is a 67 street hemi so it's painted Race Hemi Orange). Paint was a spot on match to my original paint samples, went on and covered very well, and has held up beautifully for 18 years, what else could you want?

*The can on the right is 69-71 Stret Hemi Orange

Re: hemi orange paint - 12/09/09 06:00 PM

well i got the mopar street hemi orange paint from mancini and sprayed the block and timing cover. turned out real nice, but the color looks to be between street hemi and race hemi, not what i was looking for, but it will have to do. the paint went down real nice, but was alittle thin. i bought two cans and only used 3/4 of one can. its something different than anything i'v sprayed before, has a weird smell. looks nice and glossy, no issues here other than the color not being quit right.

Re: hemi orange paint - 10/29/23 02:01 PM

Dupli-Color is a crap shoot, I've got cans that were so diluted is was like spraying water and took numerous coats to cover. I now use VHT Hemi orange, it covers great and dries fast, two coats and done.

Re: hemi orange paint - 10/31/23 07:13 PM

Aren't there four oranges used throughout the years? Race Hemi, early Street Hemi, late Street Hemi, and another orange used on the wedge motors?

Re: hemi orange paint - 10/31/23 07:32 PM

Just the first 3 I think.

Easy fix for dead can, use the air line blower. Take the cans nozzle off, stick the plastic tube into the air chuck and push down, give a 30 second or more blast. Presto, pressure back in can. Do this on ANY spray can, PB Blaster, WD 40, carb cleaner
