burnouts on street tires

with street tires, (bf goodrich radial t/a's), would it help a launch at the track to do a good burnout?

i can't get any traction off the line with these, (i know, i have them for the looks. one day i'll get another set of rims and some drag radials...), and was wondering if heating them up will help a bit.

was told no by someone, but just wanted some other opinions.

and on the subject, what is the best drag radial out there? i need something in a 275/60 15. might be able to get a 285 under there.

Never seemed to help when I used them. I ended up going to ET streets (biased) then to full slicks.

I've been told street tires need a bigger (longer) burnout to put heat in them since they are a harder compound....makes sense to me I guess.

Did a tire salesman tell you that? Most street(not drag race radials) radails don't like burn outs I have seen a lot of successful street class racers go around the water and not do any burn out at all and still win races, round after round at the local track I guess it is one of those things that you have to try on your combination to find out what works and what doesn't I do run both the M/T ET Street Radials and the ET Street bias plys on my car, the radials are faster than the bias ply tires on a good track and not as good as the bias ply tires on a bad track

Nope, just hear-say. Made a little bit of difference in the 60 ft with my 5000lb truck, but it doesn't have enough power to get out of its own way, haha.

I first ram my rr with 426 hemi stock 4 speed 391 gears 295 50 15 radials and it went low 13s with a 2.50 60 foot. Changed to 4.10 dana and 275 60 mickey thompson et streets and it jumed to 12.40s
with a 1.7 60 foot.

The cars that I have run with street radials seemed to like no water - a short dry burnout just to clean them off, and a light trigger foot. The hotter they got; the "greasier" they got.

that is the combo that seemed to work best for me...

and how did you get the 295's under there? i tried a 295/60 (or may have been 50, i can't remember), and if the car only went straight up and down i would have been ok!

but there was no way that 295 was going under there. i have 15X10 wheels and i'm pretty sure a 5.5 backspace...

Mick with TAs I would stay away from the water and do a small burn out. On a 10" wheel I think you need a 5" backspace to fit the 295/50/15.

I used to run a 275/50 Radial TA on my 5-speed mustang that ran 12.30s on slicks. I made LOTS of passes on the radial TAs. I would roll through the water(not much choice) and do a quick hard 2nd gear burnout. Worked well it ran 12.30s on slicks and 12.70s on the radial TAs with a best 60ft of 1.83 and consistant high 1.8 60s.

If you go drag radials stay away from the Nittos. I found they worked very well on the street but not so good on the track. They also were pretty scary in the rain!

EDIT, I was running these tires on an 8 inch rim and ran pretty low pressure. If I remember it was 18-20psi. I would also rotate them from side to side when the tread started to get sharp. The track was open 3 times a week and I was always there, no telling how many passes I had made on those tires.

I've run 3 different tires on my Valiant over the last few years and here's my 2 cents on the street tire topic:

M/T ET Street (bias) hook the most consistently regardless of the track conditions, but really suck on the road to just cruise in. The bias tire type really grabs ruts in the pavement and takes the butt of the car all over the place. And do NOT drive in the rain. Also very short life span with a lot of street driving.

M/T ET Radials are a little faster than the bias on a decent or well prepped track, but won't handle a really crappy track where the bias will still hook a little. The radials on my car either hook great, or nothing at all. I switched to the radials 3 years ago becuase of the road-manners of the bias and will never go back. Drives great like a regular street tire and much better in the rain. Still have to be careful on wet roads and won't handle a heavy rain, but light years better than the bias ply tires. I street drive a lot and got 3 years out of my first set and will be buying another this winter for next season.

BF Goodrich T/A Drag Radials are better than regular street tires, but not as good as the Mickey Thompson's. I ran these years ago when my car was still running in 13.0's and they were fine at the track. However they couldn't handle the car once I built my new engine which runs mid to high 11's. Great street tires in terms of rain traction and life expectancy. I'd rank them halfway between a regular street tire and a good street legal cheater slick.

thanks for the breakdown, that is exactly what i was looking for! looks like it is the ET's then. i'm sure that even when i have a set of ET's i'll run the T/A's most of the time, i just want a good tire to hook at the track, and for those times when i want a little more fun on the street!

Remember, it will hook with ET tires so you hope that your rear drivetrain will be able to handle it. If it doesn't you will be replacing parts back there. Make sure you have a good clutch aslo.
