Will it work?

Yes if the opening is above the line from hood to roofline, and you have 2 inches of space above the carbs.

A friend of mine grafted a pro type scoop onto his similar to that except it went farther out to the front having the oval part of the top scoop stick out instead of looking like it was just chopped off.

IMO, Try to find something thats functional, yet has a traditional style that '64s had.

Thats what my buddy did, his is a black 69 chevell also. What he found out was he couldn't see around it or any thing on the right side of the car while driving it, a real danger in the pits. So he cut it down so it was about 2" higher than the carbs and refiberglassed it on. The Chevell pictured has a 4" cowel , isn't yours 6'? take that into consideration on scoop height.
