Look around the forged ones are around $500 range--they are easy to balance and that saves the diff in $$ usually making it a wash--some rod piston combos come up pretty easy with the cast but it is a crap shoot--could need Mallory metal or expensive flexplate etc--On the other hand I have made lots of them with cast and never had a problem but forged is better in the end IMO

Re: SB MOPAR 360/408 EAGLE 4.00" CAST STEEL CRANK?????????? - 09/08/09 07:17 PM

I wouldn't dream of takeing one to 7000. Even in a mild aplication they are a crap shoot. I have a friend with one he just wanted to have more power in his 5.9 magnum pickup and he installed a eagle stoker kit and had it checked and rebalanced locally and the front of the crank just snapped off on where the over lap is between the front crank pin and front main journal, there was a big bubble in there not to mention how much materiel is not there that is there on my SCAT crank and it was a disastor doomed from the begining and no magnaflux or anything would have detected it. His motor was very mild just had KB 356 pistons eagle rods no porting of anything and he even used a stock 5.2 magnum cam to get a little more tq with virtually no $$$ and it couldn't take that for a couple weeks and Eagle was of no help. Also if you look at there rods compared to a SCAT the differance is night and day and the metal is a much better quality so for the very minimal $$$ differance I would not use anything from eagle ever again, go with the SCAT and sleep well

Mancini had them for $239.00. You might want to check there first.

The favorite connecting rod of any serious small block build, eagle sir's. Can we say kaboom!!! 520hp in an Abody will get you 10.60's and 125 mph. May be 460 hp is the limit for the sirs.

I've got 2 seasons on mine in a 408 motor. Around 450HP at the rear wheels. Don't wind it to 7K though. I shift around 6 - 6200rpm.

I ran a cast mopar crank in my 408 for 3 years, around 4-500 passes or so. It dynoed 553 horsepower and I don't remember the torque off hand. Only pulled it out to put in a 416. The engine builder said that with a cast crank not to use a transbrake with it.

I ran my 410 cast crank with all transbrake launchs4000, 6800 shifts .Don't remember what rods ,arp bolts ,in the OHIO CRANK kit ,replaced crank too much alky oil then replaced with mopar C.C till death last year at MMW about 6 years of bracket racing for pts . Stepped up this year callies, probe pistons.

Re: SB MOPAR 360/408 EAGLE 4.00" CAST STEEL CRANK?????????? - 09/09/09 02:24 AM

I bought a cast one for a 408ci interim motor for my F.A.S.T. Duster. It took me to 11.90 @ 114 which was very good considering how we had to run. I wrung it only to 6200 or so. The amount of meat in the arm between the 7/8 journal and the rear main bearing journal was scary to look at but didn't cause an issue.

One very nice positive is that it didn't need any mallory to internally balance. I ran Eagle H beams and SRP forgings.

Hey,you can think what you want..but thats the conclusion my engine builder came up with, and his oppinion is a LOT more important then yours, yes 2 seasons i have a "REAL" engine builder, not someone that just puts engines together like so many do..not his fault the bolt let go either..

I really can't see why you'd need to turn 7K rpm to make 500 ponies with a 4 inch arm!!!

My first question would be application?

I have 2 friends; very respected, very successful NHRA SST racers who ran the 4 inch cast cranks, one with W-2's, the other with W-5's, Transbrake 904's, both over 132 mph on the stop at 10.90 and 2900lbs. They each broke 2 of the cast cranks, at between 150-250 passes, before moving on to forged units.

Street car, moderate rpms and compression, no problem, but in a serious race engine, that's not a place to save 300 bucks.

sure he's going to say that , he suggested them and told you they would be fine. you didn't tell us how many passes in the 2 seasons you made.

Hey smarty pants,he was actually AGAINST me using them and when it was determined it was a rod bolt and not the rod he was surprised as anyone.. as for the number of passes i really don't know..

thats not what you told us when you first came on here. you said the builder told you they were good for your HP. it doesn't matter Im just ragging you but I still bet the rod broke first. got any pics of the the rod and bolts?

At the end of the day will you regret spending the money for the forged? Unlikely. Could you say the same for the cast version? You pays your money and you takes your chances. Buy the forged, get quality parts and machine work done and concentrate on winning
