Moparts Article Avail? Home-made 727 shiftkit? - 08/24/09 07:05 PM

Is there a "how to" post archived here on making the 727 shift firmer?
Like: throw out this ball bearing,
drill this hole larger,
throw out this accumulator spring,
adjust this bolt to x-inches,
etc...?
I used to have a Mopar Magazine article that told you how to do all that but have since stored it where I no longer know where it is!

Thanks!

The BEST cheapO(but good) that I know of is as follows ....

Toss the acc spring, jack-up the line-pressure a tad and put in a higher up-shift gov-package.

uNless they have done something way WAY better with them in the last 10 or so years.....those trans-go(etc)shift-kits ..IMO ...are a big-time waste of money.

remove one check ball
drill 1-2 holes in the seperator plate (depending on year)
remove accumulator spring
bump line pressure

I have the article but no way to scan....

I remember that article and modified my 727, must have been about 25 years ago. There was a big improvement to the 1-2 shift but it didn't do anything for the 2-3 shift if I remember correctly.

The PDF file in the link below is the instructions for the TCI reprogramming kit, many of the mods can be duplicated at home...pay particular attention to the pic on page 11 concerning the orifice sizes in the steel separator plate.

http://www.tciauto.com/v002/Instructions/Files/220000.pdf

Rigidizing the rear servo piston is important when doing the other mods, the heavier spring included in the kit won't be as easy to find but should be added too.

Regardless of the TCI instructions and the common Mopar community myth, removing the outer accumulator spring has no effect on the upshifting; oldest myth in the Mopar world.
