Nebraska bound!

Nebraska bound! - 08/14/09 03:41 AM

Loaded up and ready to go to Kearney tomorrow. Meeting up with my buddy Mike Jeffrey and some other Slanted racers for our first "national" Slant race. Car sounds pretty good, but I have not had the throttle wide open on it yet this year. Guess we'll find out Saturday if it still runs or not. I took all the nitrous stuff off and will be running it as a true footbrake car. If it runs 15.0's I'll be ecstatic.

Oh yeah, Reed is also having a get together at the track Saturday. I've heard a rumor that some guy named Fred may be there with an old Duster.

The 65 Golden Commandos AWB and Bud Faubel's 65 AWB "Hemi Honker" are already here - Hank Taylor's 64 SS Ply. PLUS Hank Taylor himself will be here ! - Jerry Stein's "Teacher's Pet" 64 Ply. Wagon, Lee Smith's 66 Belv "Wackee Wagon", Gary Ostrich's 66 Belv Wagon, original Sox & Martin cars, Fred Hurst's A/Gas 70 Cuda, some restored 1968 LO23 Dart's and BO29 Barracuda's, Chick Dennino's 63 Ply. Max Wedge plus more Maxie's and Race Hemi's and musclecars from 1960-1980 and more. I honestly don't know how many cars are coming but I believe this could be interesting from the amount of emails and calls! Geoff Stunkard is already here to cover this event and MoPar Action and some independent photographers will be here too. It's $10.00 to get in the gate - usual fee's if you're gonna race. If you have a car you want to put on display, we'll have one area just for "restored" musclecars and all the "nostalgia" drag cars will be in one area - plenty of room for racers and spectators.
There will be some "heavy iron" here here in the midwest that you normally don't get to see - also, Friday(tomorrow) will be an all day "Social Hour" for incoming visitors with some drinks and lite munchies at my shop - Reed's Perf. 2011 Ave B, Kearney, Ne 68847, so come on by and socialize 'till ?? Also, we will be selling T-shirts for this event, so check with us here at the shop or at the strip, look for an enclosed trailer w/ the Sox & Martin PS Omni out in front to see Dick Towers(MatchRaceMadness) and get a T-shirt or buy some photos. Feel free to email or call for info: raremopars@frontiernet.net or 308-380-8630 - basic info at FlatlanderFling.com -- Many Thanks, Reed in Neb.

Got mine loaded, but I wont be able to race, My"NEW" driveshaft is not true, and makes my fillings bounce out over 50+mph.

It looks good on the wagon though!!

That's Mike Jeffrey. He was the ringleader for the Slant 6 race. The Buzzin' car is a '68 Valiant. He had the V/SA Diplomat there this weekend.

Keith, saw ya on the way to Joliet this morning when I was coming home. Drove all night and got into some crap this side of Des Moines.

My car was an absolute turd this weekend. It started out way slow, slowed down more, and then proceeded to pick up on every pass after that. I won first round on a double breakout, and after dialing down a ton, broke out by a day and a half on the brakes in the second round.

Oh well, the car went back on the trailer under it's own power and we had a great time.

Reed put on quite a nostalgia show too. Thanks Reed!

Re: Nebraska bound! - 08/16/09 02:59 PM

Glad to hear you had a great time!!! I wish I could of made it down. My car loves to run slower at Kearney too. I think it's the 2200 altitude and the 100mph head wind Later and take care

We had air over 5000' yesterday. The worse the air got the faster the cars went. Everyone was breaking out a ton.

I didn't see you but Mopar John was a couple of miles ahead of me and he said he saw you.

That storm you went through hit RT66 at about 3:00
I was the last pair to run before the rain came. We were both fully staged when a few drops hit the windshield. I was expecting to be waived off but then the tree came down, luckily I had a descent lite and won the race.

They didn't get started again until about7:30

Re: Nebraska bound! - 08/17/09 10:11 PM

Keith, are you guys done out there until the end of September now?

I can actually keep my car at home now so I may be able to get out there.

I have solved the issue of the motor going flat at 5000 anyway. I had a 6400 chip in the shift light at Kearney and it was still pulling strong at the gear changes.

It was still a pig though.

I'm thinking I broke another converter. Time to try a Coan maybe.

I'd get a Turbo Action but I don't want to launch my pinion gear to the moon.

Re: Nebraska bound! - 08/18/09 01:45 AM

The points for Indy were set yesterday.

There are two rescheduled rain outs. September 26&27. These will count for the seasons points.

Let me know what you find with your converter/pig problem.

Re: Nebraska bound! - 08/18/09 09:36 PM

I'm wondering now that maybe it really isn't a broken converter, just the fact that I was on motor only with a nitrous converter and 5000+' air.

Trans in the truck worked pretty well. It went into limp mode once in Iowa when I was running 70 up and down all those hills with a 20 mph or so headwind and 90+ degree weather. Slowed down to 65 and it was fine.

It is locking up the converter too.

I may swap in the valve body from my spare 46RE I have laying around Saturday.

If I could have gotten my poison dart tube loaded while getting off I-80 you'd a gotten one in the neck for going the wrong way! With all the rain delays you would have gotten plenty of sleep at 66!

I thought about stopping in, but after driving all night and fighting the rain I was just too worn out. I had to be in bed early anyway, I am working 3am-3pm this week.
